I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

I Love Picture Books
Reading Challenge
2014

hosted by Gina at Book Dragon's Lair - oh! That's me :-D

For all of you who still love picture books but find they don't qualify for your other challenges. . . You know you're going to read them, they might as well count!

Guidelines:
  • Challenge runs from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014
  • Read picture books.
  • Pick a number and go for it. Twelve too easy? Go for 20. Piece of cake? Go for 40.
  • Books you own and library check outs count. So do ebooks and re-reads.
  • Please post about the challenge and sign up with a direct link.
  • A blog is not necessary, just link to where you talk about the challenge
  • Reviews are not necessary but would be nice (so we know which ones to read ourselves!) A link for reviews will be posted in January.

Ready? Let's do this!

RC: Counting Pages Read . . only 950,517 to go!

One Million Pages
Reading Challenge
Perpetual

hosted at Smiling Shelves
more information and sign ups, here

Main goal: Read One Million Pages in your lifetime.

I had seen the GoodReads group, I think I even signed up, but as I kept forgetting my log-in info and use LibraryThing so much more, I deleted my GR account. :-(

I joined "Let Me Count the Ways" for 2013 with a top level of 10,000+. I'm sure I'll hit 50,000 this year, I've got four weeks and 600 pages to go. With that knowledge it will take me 20 years :-) I can think a worse things to spend 20 years doing.

The GR group says 15 picture books=1 book but I'm not counting books, I'm counting pages and don't know if I want to separate them, again. We'll see.

My first post about this was Jan 2012! I started blogging in 2009 so, if possible, that's how far back I'll go with my page count.

The funny thing is when I told my husband about the challenge, he thinks I've already met it!

2009 - 81,104 . . . still missing a couple but this is close enough!
2010 - 1,719 . . . terrible year of record keeping
2011 -
2012 -
2013 - final total: 54,856

~ 2014 Monthly Page Totals ~

Let's start with a quick note to wish all who celebrate Thanksgiving a....

and if you don't - have a great weekend. I'll be spending the day with extended family on Thursday and Friday (his side/my side)

I was away for less than a week and my in-laws came over to feed the cats. Frisky would say hi and if you sat down she was all over you but they only saw Sneakers once. Guess what happened when I got home and sat down. . .

the zebra stripe is a blanket over my lap :-)

Fall Fashion - Southern California Style (it was after 9 p.m.)
I'm standing where we parked. Can you see the end?

yeah, I went to Disneyland in these shoes!
M and I went to the local Disney store but the Christmas ornaments we wanted were only sold at the parks or on line. No problem, we'll just go to Disneyland (love the annual pass!) the only problem being the shoes I wore for dinner/shopping were NOT what I'd wear to Disney. I'm just glad M dropped me off so I only had to walk this far once.

~ here are the new books in my house this week ~

sigh, purchased while on vacation
Last Chance Knit & Stitch by Hope Ramsay (book 9 in the Last Chance series)

Molly Canaday wishes she could repair her life as easily as she fixes cars. She was all set to open her own body shop in Last Chance when her mother ran off and left her to manage the family yarn shop instead. Now guided by the unsolicited-though well-intended-advice of the weekly knitting club, Molly works to untangle this mess. But her plan unravels when the new landlord turns out to be difficult-as well as tall, dark, and handsome.

Simon Wolfe returns to quickly settle his father's estate and then leave Last Chance for good. Still wounded by a broken heart, Simon is surprised when the town's charming streets and gentle spirit bring back good memories. Soon the beautiful, strong-willed Molly sparks a powerful attraction that tempts him to break his iron-clad no-commitment rule. Can Simon and Molly find a way to share work space-and build a future together in Last Chance?

delivered while on vacation :-)
Temptation by Sherryl Woods
Callie Smith's quest for success far from her Iowa roots has caused a rift with her hardworking family. And with neither her Wall Street career nor her marriage going as planned, she starts to question the choices she's made.

But when charismatic network president Jason Kane pursues her to save a failing soap opera, her life is soon full of more twists than a TV story line. Suddenly she gets to know a whole new side to her mother, and also has the opportunity to save a friend's life. Most unexpected of all, she leaves heartache behind and tunes in to the love of a lifetime.

So far, I haven't received the other review book I'm waiting for, won any contests or received any books as a gift. I have added several to my ereader, some were even free

added to my ereader: (kindle app, html, etc.)
I went shopping through the free section. There was one pre-order (release Dec 1) that I almost bought in print today and about 50 free ones. And no, I don't think I'll ever have time to read them all.

The Edge of Courage, Red Team Book 1 by Elaine Levine
Haunted by memories he cannot reach, stalked by an enemy bent on revenge . . .
Rocco Silas has come home to Wyoming after long years as a Red Team operative in Afghanistan. It isn't easy returning to civilian life, especially burdened as he is with a staggering case of PTSD or hunted as he is by an enemy determined to seek an eye-for-eye--neither of which can he battle until he confronts the truth of what happened one fateful day in the high mountain ranges of the Hindu Kush.

. . . She alone holds the key to his sanity.
Mandy Fielding's dream of opening a therapeutic riding center on her family's ranch is almost within her grasp--until she hires Rocco Silas, a dangerous ex-Spec Ops friend of her brother's. His haunted eyes and passionate touch promise a love she never dared believe possible. Can they confront the truth of his past and build a future together or will the enemy stalking him destroy them both?

Length: Approximately 367 pages Ages: 18 & up (story contains sex, profanity, and violence)

The Cestus Concern by Mat Nastos
Waking up in an operating room, much to the surprise of the attending surgeons, Malcolm Weir frantically fights his way out of a secret government installation, located in downtown Los Angeles. Battling through a mass of armed guards and meta-gene operatives, the cyborg warrior realizes he has no memory of how he got there.

The past 11 months are gone.

With a hole in his mind, Weir must retrace his steps for the past year, fighting his way through the nearly endless horde of super powered mercenaries and assassins the government sends after him.

Travel along with Weir, facing some of the most intense action ever put to paper, along with a body count of ridiculous proportions, as he tracks down the secrets trapped in his head.

In the end, Weir must stand alone against a former friend and a squad of the deadliest killers ever created, all to learn the terrifying truth behind Project: Hardwired.

~ here are the new books in my house this week ~

Zero Day by Mark Russinovich
Over the Atlantic, an airliner's controls suddenly stop reacting. In Japan, an oil tanker runs aground when its navigational system fails. and in America, a nuclear power plant nearly becomes the next Chernobyl.

At first, these computer failures seem unrelated. But Jeff Aiken, a former government analyst who saw the mistakes made before 9/11, fears there may be a more serious attack coming. And he soon realizes that there isn't much time if he hopes to stop an international disaster.

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun.  What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?

Mr. Wuffles! by David Wiesner

Mr. Wuffles ignores all the toys people buy for him. You might think he's a lazy cat, but you'd be wrong. He's just very picky about his toys.

Now Mr. Wuffles has the perfect toy, and he's ready to play. But it's not really a toy at all. It's something much more interesting.

So far, I haven't received the other review book I'm waiting for, won any contests or received any books as a gift. I have added several to my ereader, some were even free

added to my ereader: (kindle app, html, etc.)

The Hidden series by Emma Holly (books 1 - 5). Melting pot of paranormal living in a fey world that overlaps ours. Very sexy! The wolves are cops and the tigers are firemen. Good fairies and bad. Books 4 & 5 have dragons. Book 5 is m/m.

The Christmas Owl by Angela Muse (picture book)

A Barred owl becomes injured and must ask others for help. He promises to give back to those who have a generous heart and he is true to his word.

Once a Runner by John L. Parker Jr. Once a Runner captures the essence of what it means to be a competitive runner; to devote your entire existence to a single-minded pursuit of excellence. It has become one of the most beloved sports novels ever written.

Originally self-published in 1978 and sold at road races out of the trunk of the author's car, the book eventually found its way into the hands of high school, college, and postgraduate athletes all over the country. Reading it became a rite of passage on many teams, and tattered copies were handed down like sacred texts from generation to generation.

The 2014 Sci-Fi Experience starts Dec 1

The 2014 Sci-Fi Experience
Dec 1, 2013 - Jan 31, 2014

hosted by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings

For more information and to sign-up, click here

This is neither a read-a-thon nor a challenge. It is simply a time to read science fiction. Carl invites us to:

a) Continue their love affair with science fiction
b) Return to science fiction after an absence, or
c) Experience for the first time just how exhilarating science fiction can be.

There will be a review site where you can post any SF book, television, film or game reviews for things you experience during the months of December and January.

And because it is Carl, you must read his post.

As for me, I've had Brave New World by Aldous Huxley on my TBR list for a long time. I know right where the paperback is and am hoping to get it read.
