Killer Librarian by Mary Lou Kirwin
Karen Nash, 2012, mass market paperback

FILE “M” FOR MURDER...

Champion of the mystery section at a small-town Minnesota library, Karen Nash is about to embark on a dream trip to London—a literary tour inspired by every murderous intrigue, wily suspect, and ingenious crime found in the pages of the British mysteries that she devours. But she’s clueless why the love of her mid-life, Dave, would dump her hours before takeoff—until she spies him at the airport with a young honey on his arm! She decides the best revenge (for now) is to get on that plane anyway...and entertain schemes for Dave’s untimely demise while crossing the pond.

After touching ground in the hallowed homeland of Christie, Sayers, and Peters, she checks into a cozy B & B run by charming bibliophile Caldwell Perkins. Soon she’s spilling tears in her pint at the corner pub, sharing her heartbreak saga with a stranger. That night, a B & B guest drops out of circulation—permanently. And when Dave and his cutie turn up in London, Karen realizes they are an assassin’s target. With the meticulous attention to detail that makes her a killer librarian, Karen sleuths her way through her own real-life mystery—in which library science meets the art of murder.

What books would you paint on your stairs?

I've seen the pictures on Pinterest but didn't think much of it other than "that's cool". After all, I share my house with people who don't read as much as I do. Would they (meaning husband) be willing to redo our stairs? How would I choose which books to include? Would have I to share the stairs with the other two readers in the house?

Then Elizabeth at Silver's Reviews had a post about it (here) and I started thinking about it again.

I've got 14 risers to paint. Our stairs have a corner so most won't be seen from the front door. I think I can narrow it down to 14 authors but not sure about titles. Also, the bottom three could be seen from the front door but about the only time you'd see the bottom two is walking up to the front door while it's opened.

  1. Memorial Day by Vince Flynn
  2. The Four Phase Man by Richard Steinberg
  3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  4. Arrow's Flight by Mercedes Lackey
  5. Dune by Frank Herbert
  6. The Cat Who Played Post Office by Lillian Jackson Braun
  7.  Reflex by Dick Francis
  8.  Dragon Harper by Anne McCaffrey
  9. Magician by Raymond E. Fiest
  10. On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony
  11. Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce
  12. Hazard by Jo Beverley
  13. It's In His Kiss by Julia Quinn
  14. There's No Such Things as a Dragon by Jack Kent
I did it! Ann McCaffrey was the hardest to choose for, I narrowed it down to five titles before going with a Pern title. Of these 14 titles, my daughter read one (and the series), my husband has read two (and the series) and my son has read two (and the series). I have read all of them, most of them more than twice.

What titles would you choose?

Thoughts on . . . My Yellow Balloon by Tiffany Papageorge

My Yellow Balloon
by Tiffany Papageorge

Publisher: Minoan Moon Publishing
ISBN: 978-0990337003
Published: October, 2014
genre: picture book
48 pages
age level: 4-8

format available: hardcover, ebook

author's website - Facebook

Grade: A

Description:

It all started at the carnival...That’s where Joey makes a new friend: a bright yellow balloon. Joey and his beloved balloon do everything together, until the balloon accidentally slips off Joey’s wrist and flies far, far away. What will Joey do without his special friend?

Tiffany Papageorge has crafted a poignant tale of love, loss, and letting go that will serve as a comforting guide to children who are navigating the complicated emotions of grief. Rich, luminous illustrations by Erwin Madrid perfectly capture these timeless themes, making them accessible to even the youngest reader.

Honest, unflinching, and ultimately reassuring, My Yellow Balloon will resonate with anyone who has endured the darkness of grief, while offering hope for brighter days ahead.

My Thoughts
First off, the hardcover book itself is nice. Thick, glossy pages make a nice feel in your hands as your read.

The first pages are full of color with a happy feel. The way to balloon flies away was surprising and the pages after are now less full of the illustrations and they're muddier in color. Until the very end when Joey realized that just because his balloon is gone, doesn't mean he can't be happy remembering the good times they shared.

Then one day. In one second. Everything changed.

Death can be that fast and reading about Joey and his struggles after his balloon flew away brought tears to my eyes. The stages of grief are illustrated as well as the feelings of "sad most of the time", "a lot of the time", and "some of the time". Until a trip to the park . . .

Once more. In one second. Everything changed.

Tiffany has taken a hard subject and simplified it just enough. Along with Erwin's illustrations, this is a book deserving a spot in our school and home libraries.

Diplomatic Security Service agent Brody Hancock left Knights Bridge at eighteen, a few steps ahead of arrest and the wrath of Heather's older brothers. Though Brody had never planned to return, Vic, a retired diplomat and friend, needs his help.

Staying at Vic's guest house makes it impossible to avoid running into a Sloan at every turn—especially Heather. Seeing her again has affected Brody more than he wants to admit. But Heather is wary of Brody's sudden interest in her, and she suspects there's more to his homecoming than he's letting on….

~ here are the newest books in my house ~
I Could Pee on This by Francesco Marciuliano
humor, 2012, gift size hardcover

Cat lovers will laugh out loud at the quirkiness of their feline friends with these insightful and curious poems from the singular minds of housecats. In this hilarious book of tongue-in-cheek poetry, the author of the internationally syndicated comic strip Sally Forth helps cats unlock their creative potential and explain their odd behavior to ignorant humans. With titles like "Who Is That on Your Lap?," "This Is My Chair," "Kneel Before Me," "Nudge," and "Some of My Best Friends Are Dogs," the poems collected in I Could Pee on This perfectly capture the inner workings of the cat psyche. With photos of the cat authors throughout, this whimsical volume reveals kitties at their wackiest, and most exasperating (but always lovable).

Off Kilter by Hannah Reed
A Scottish Highlands Mystery, 2014, mass market paperback

After the recent death of her mother and the dissolution of her marriage, thirty-something Eden Elliott is seriously in need of a fresh start. At the urging of her best friend, bestselling author Ami Pederson, Eden decides to embark on an open-ended trip to the picturesque village of Glenkillen in the Scottish Highlands, to do some hands-on research for a book of her own. But almost as soon as Eden arrives in the quaint town, she gets caught up in a very real drama…

The town’s sheep shearer is found murdered—clipped with his own shears—and the locals suspect Vicki MacBride, an outsider whose father’s recent death left her the surprise heir to his lucrative sheep farm. Eden refuses to believe the affable heiress is a murderer, but can she prove that someone is out to frame her new friend before she finds herself on the receiving end of more shear terror?

Dragon's Extraordinary Egg by Debi Gliori
picture book, 2014, hardcover

In this heartwarming story, a dragon in need of an egg finds an abandoned egg in need of a mommy. It seems like the perfect fit, but when that egg hatches, the little baby doesn't look like all the other dragons. In fact, he looks a lot like a penguin! Of course, his mommy loves him no matter what. But the other young dragons aren't so sure. Little do they know that their feathered friend's differences will save the day! Sometimes things happen for a reason . . . and some families are just meant to be together.
