I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

So I'm going on vacation . . .

I'm leaving the family at home and heading to sister-in-law's house to play with their dog for a week. I guess you could say I'm house sitting or dog sitting but I consider it getting to play with their dog for the week.

I'm planning what I'm taking and while I have a list of stuff I usually take on vacation, the most important things this trip are my running shoes (walking the dog), my laptop/ereader, and a pile of books. So far I've got 10 print books. I seem to looking forward to reading Sabrina Jeffries ;-) Some of these are review books so look for a review post or two sometime this summer.

The Art of Sinning by Sabrina Jeffries (spotlight)
What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries (series)
When the Rogue Returns by Sabrina Jeffries
How the Scoundrel Seduces by Sabrina Jeffries
If the Viscount Falls by Sabrina Jeffries
99 Essential Weight Loss Blogposts by Kenneth Schwarz Ph.D. (LibraryThing)
A Potion to Die For by Heather Blake
Wishful Thinking by Kamy Wicoff (spotlight)
Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones (GoodReads)
Closer to Home by Mercedes Lackey

I'm not leaving until Sunday afternoon so I've still got time to change my mind or add to my stack. I'll let you know what my final count is.

edit:  I added three more print books to my stack:

Snow Way Out by Christine Husom
Twisted Threads by Lea Wait
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein

Finishing up an ebook I started before leaving home.

To Iraq and Back by Jessica Scott
non-fiction, 2013, ebook

My name is Jessica Scott. I am a soldier. I am a wife. I am a mother. There are many stories from the Iraq war. This one is mine.

In 2009, Army second lieutenant Jessica Scott deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. It was a year of many firsts.

This is the first person journey through a combat tour in Iraq, through being a woman in the army and learning to be an officer in the unforgiving environment of a brigade combat team. This is the journey of a writer, learning to find her voice. This is the journey of a mother, confronting the emotions of leaving her children. This is the story of an inexperienced lieutenant, growing into a leader. This is the journey as it happened, without commentary.

Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas
historical romance, 2004-reprint, mass market paperback

She gave him her innocence…

Lady Aline Marsden was brought up for one reason: to make an advantageous marriage to a member of her own class.

Instead, she willingly gave her innocence to John McKenna, a servant on her father’s estate. Their passionate transgression was unforgivable — John was sent away, and Aline was left to live in the countryside…an exile from London society.

…and he took her love.

Now McKenna has made his fortune, and he has returned — more boldly handsome and more mesmerizing than before.

His ruthless plan is to take revenge on the woman who shattered his dreams of love. But the magic between them burns as bright as ever. And now he must decide whether to let vengeance take its toll…or risk everything for his first, and only, love.

The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
Discworld, 2009-reprint, ebook . . . kindle match :-)

Twoflower was a tourist, the first ever seen on the Discworld. Tourist, Rincewind decided, meant idiot.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place which might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. It plays by different rules. Certainly it refuses to succumb to the quaint notion that universes are ruled by pure logic and the harmony of numbers.

But just because the Disc is different doesn't mean that some things don't stay the same. Its very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the arrival of the first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. But if the person charged with maintaining that survival in the face of robbers, mercenaries and, well, Death is a spectacularly inept wizard, a little logic might turn out to be a very good idea...

Terrific Tuesday

Hosted at Bibliophile by the Sea
Every Tuesday, she'll be posting the opening paragraph (maybe two) of her current read. Why don't you join us?

No one woke up in the morning and thought to themselves, Today I'm going to get lost in the woods. But even without a plan, it happened.

Maybe it was simply that innate human need to explore. Maybe it was bad luck, or maybe it was just people being idiots. Grandma NEll had always loved to say, "Beauty in skin deep, but stupid goes clear down to the bone." Not that Destiny Mills was going to be judgmental either way. People got lost, and her job was to make sure they got found. It was kind of like being a superhero. Only instead of laser vision or invisibility, she had a brilliant computer software program and a finely honed search and rescue team.

Well, technically the team wasn't hers. It belonged to whatever town or county had hired her company. Her firm had created the software program, and she was one of three facilitators who helped those wanting to use it. She showed up, trained the search and rescue group and then moved on to the next assignment.
Hold Me by Susan Mallery

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme,
hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
1. Grab your current read Open to a random page
2. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page ~BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!~ make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!
3. Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

"He was in great shape, she thought, admitting that he was just charming enough to make her wonder if there was any potential there.

Nope... She wanted ordinary. Regular. The kind of man who understood that life was best lived quietly... He was a thrill seeker at heart, which meant not for her.

She would simply keep looking. Because the man of her very own calm, rational dreams was out there, and one day she would find him."
Hold Me by Susan Mallery

Guess who the main characters are? ;-)

The Faerie Guardian by Rachel Morgan
Creepy Hallow, 2015, ebook

Protecting humans from dangerous magical creatures is all in a day’s work for a faerie training to be a guardian. Seventeen-year-old Violet Fairdale knows this better than anyone—she’s about to become the best guardian the Guild has seen in years. That is, until a cute human boy who can somehow see through her faerie glamour follows her into the fae realm. Now she’s broken Guild Law, a crime that could lead to her expulsion.

The last thing Vi wants to do is spend any more time with the boy who got her into this mess, but the Guild requires that she return Nate to his home and make him forget everything he’s discovered of the fae realm. Easy, right? Not when you factor in evil faeries, long-lost family members, and inconvenient feelings of the romantic kind. Vi is about to find herself tangled up in a dangerous plot—and it’ll take all her training to get out alive.

Actually, I got the boxed set, Violet's story. It includes The Faerie Guardian, The Faerie Prince and The Faerie War

Monday's Challenge (late)
Bookish Survey at Writing My Own Fairy Tale

The Questions:

1. How do you organize your shelves?
. . . Right now they're a mess and a lot are boxed up in storage. Eventually I'll get the two bedrooms redone and I'll be able to separate them by reading level then genre, except for some authors (for example, all of Anne/Todd McCaffrey's books will be together). I'd like to have a spot just for Christmas books.

2. What is one of your favorite book that’s not in one of your favorite genres?
. . . a favorite book? Not sure I can narrow it down to just one.

3. What is the last 5 star book you read?
. . . Red by Michael Hall was an awesome picture book that has a deep meaning for everyone but I'm going to have to go with A Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi. This one scared the heck out of me even reading it again a year later!

4. What book are you most excited to read during the read-a-thon?
. . . I don't have a set list of books to read, wait a minute, Hold Me by Susan Mallery or Forgotten Sins by Rebecca Zanetti are both sitting by my reading chair. Still not sure if I'll get to them this week.

5. What book do you recommend the most?
. . . there are a couple. Mistaken Identity by Don & Susie Van Ryn and Newell, Colleen & Whitney Cerak with Mark Tabb (review) and There's No Such Thing as a Dragon by Jack Kent (review) which is a picture book with a great message.

Saturday's Challenge (late)
Favorite Read Photo at Once Upon a Chapter

I'm going to go with Hold Me for two reasons. It's Susan Mallery and Fool's Gold!

There are two more books coming soon in this series, Kiss Me in June and Thrill Me in July ~ happy dance~

~ here are the newest books in my house ~
Hold Me by Susan Mallery
Fool's Gold, 2015, mass market paperback

Destiny Mills believes passion has its place—like in the lyrics of the country songs that made her parents famous. After a childhood full of drama and heartache, she wants a life that's calm. Safe. Everything that Kipling Gilmore isn't. Her temporary assignment with the Fool's Gold search and rescue team puts her in delicious proximity to the former world-class skier every day. Part of her aches to let go for once…the rest is terrified what'll happen if she does.

Though an accident ended his career, Kipling still lives for thrills—and a hot fling with a gorgeous redhead like Destiny would be a welcome diversion. Yet beneath his new coworker's cool facade is a woman who needs more than he's ever given. With her, he's ready to take the risk. But love, like skiing, is all about trust—and before you soar, you have to be willing to fall.

The Devil's Waters by David L. Robbins (GoodReads)
USAF Pararescue, 2012, ebook and audio

A giant freighter in the Gulf of Aden holds secret cargo that could bring down the governments of four nations. When Somali pirates grab the ship, the order comes down: get the freighter back, at all costs.

Only one combat group is close enough to respond before the hijacked freighter reaches Somali waters: the elite US Air Force pararescue unit—the PJs—stationed in Djibouti. Though their mission is to save lives, and their oath is “That Others May Live,” the PJs are battle-tested. The team doesn’t hesitate because one of their own, Sgt. LB DiNardo, is already onboard the hijacked ship.

LB has three tasks: provide intel on the pirates, stay alive until the team arrives, and withstand the humiliation of breaking the PJs’ cardinal rule: Never be the one who needs rescuing.

At the head of the pirates is the shrewd and ruthless Yusuf Raage, a clan leader who will sacrifice anything and anyone to keep his captured ship. The PJs have a mere hour to take down the ship before the Air Force blows it up. Even if they survive the wrath of Yusuf Raage, more secrets and danger await them.
