Cat is a single mother living in Detroit when her brother, Kyle, a bond trader, is killed in the World Trade Centre on Sept. 11. As she attempts to find the infant son born to his girlfriend, she receives a call from her elderly father, Sam, who invites her to California to mark the first anniversary of Kyle’s death. Most of the narrative toggles from Sam’s perspective to Cat’s and back again, pivoting on hidden hurts revealed through fluid flashbacks.
