H! Was Hemingway the first author you thought of? How about Robert A Heinlein? I own books by these as well as Kristin Hardy, Charlaine Harris, Elizabeth Haydon, Mary H. Herbert, Jack Higgins, and Leanna Renee Heiber

I was horse-mad growing up (still am a little) and I remember devouring everything I could find by Ms. Henry!
King of the Wind
by Marguerite Henry, foundation website

He was named "Sham" for the sun, this golden-red stallion born in the Sultan of Morocco's stone stables. Upon his heel was a small white spot, the symbol of speed. But on his chest was the symbol of misfortune. Although he was swift as the desert winds, Sham's pedigree would be scorned all his life by cruel masters and owners.

This is the classic story of Sham and his friend, the stable boy Agba. Their adventures take them from the sands of the Sahara. to the royal courts of France, and finally to the green pastures and stately homes of England. For Sham was the renowned Godolphin Arabian, whose blood flows through the veins of almost very superior thoroughbred. Sham's speed — like his story — has become legendary.

Magic Hour
by Kristin Hannah website

Deep in the Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest- nearly one million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. Even in this modern age, much of it remains undiscovered and uncharted. From the heart of this old forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she can give no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past…

Until recently, Dr. Julia Cates was one of the preeminent child psychiatrists in the country, but a scandal shattered her confidence, ruined her career, and made her a media target. When she gets a desperate call from her estranged sister, Ellie, a police chief in their small western Washington hometown, she jumps at the chance to escape.

In Rain Valley, nothing much ever happens-until a girl emerges from the deep woods and walks into town. She is a victim unlike any Julia has ever seen: a child locked in a world of unimaginable fear and isolation.

(doesn't even begin to tell of the power in this novel)

G! Erle Stanley Gardner, Zane Grey, Terry Goodkind's website, Debora Geary's website

I had a hard time choosing so I went with the first suspense title. Ms Gardner's first books were written a Alicia Scott. (the notorious serial killer in Hide was named for a piece of exercise equipment)
The Perfect Husband
by Lisa Gardner website
Jim Beckett was everything she’d ever dreamed of...

But two years after Tess married the decorated cop and bore his child, she helped put him behind bars for savagely murdering ten women. Even locked up in a maximum security prison, he vowed he would come after her and make her pay.

Now the cunning killer has escaped—and the most dangerous game of all begins

Death by Cashmere
by Sally Goldenbaum website
Nell Endicott's niece, Izzy Chambers, raises some eyebrows when she rents the apartment above her knitting shop to Angie Archer, whose reputation for loose behavior and a quick temper has made her unpopular with many locals. But could any of them have wanted her dead? Angie’s body is discovered drowned in the harbor, her long red hair tangled like seaweed in a lobster trap.

An official investigation rules the death an accident. There are speculations of too many whiskey sours, a slippery wharf, a dark night… But Izzy and the Seaside Knitters smell something fishy. When several strange incidents occur above the shop, the women decide to take matters into their own hands. But before long, their small-town sense of security is frayed, and the threat of more violence hangs over this tightly knit community.

The Princess Bride, movie website
by William Goldman, info at wikipedia
A true fantasy classic. William Goldman describes it as a "good parts version" of "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure." Morgenstern's original was filled with details of Florinese history, court etiquette, and Mrs. Morgenstern's mostly complimentary views of the text. Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."

Goldman frames the fairy tale with an "autobiographical" story: his father, who came from Florin, abridged the book as he read it to his son. Now, Goldman is publishing an abridged version, interspersed with comments on the parts he cut out.

F? Let's see. . . David Farland, Walter Farley, Susan Fletcher, Lori Foster, Alan Dean Foster, Earlene Fowler, Tracy Fobes

Cornelia Funke, website
"I wrote my first story when I was nearly 35 years old! I was ancient!

"Now I am 53. Together with my children Ben and Anna I live in the City of Angels - in beautiful Los Angeles. We have a wonderful and wacky dog named Luna (nowadays we call her Looney - that’s much more appropriate!) and a biting turtle which my son Ben called Hercules (although she's a girl). Our house is crammed with books and DVDs (we are all completely addicted to watching movies) and dragons made of all sorts of materials.

"I am very lucky that my children like what I do and that their friends like to read my stories. Otherwise life would be rather embarrassing for them, don't you think?"

Always Looking Up
by Michael J. Fox, info at Wikipedia, his Foundation

At the turn from our bedroom into the hallway, there is an old full-length mirror in a wooden frame. I can't help but catch a glimpse of myself as I pass. Turning fully toward the glass, I consider what I see. This reflected version of myself, wet, shaking, rumpled, pinched, and slightly stooped, would be alarming were it not for the self-satisfied expression pasted across my face. I would ask the obvious question, "What are you smiling about?" but I already know the answer: "It just gets better from here." — from Always Looking Up

Dick Francis and Felix Francis website

I've been reading Dick Francis for 30 years. He was a jockey. And a writer. That doesn't do him justice. His mysteries have a horse element but are not strictly for the horse-mad as I was/am. The are strong mystery novels and I am so glad that his son Felix is carrying on the work.

I am unable to even pick a favorite couple. My husband only buys DF for me if it came out within the week. Otherwise he knows I already have it. I was once teased that I married M so I'd be a Francis too. :D

Hanging by a Thread
Monica Ferris, website

Betsy is still new enough to Excelsior, Minnesota, to not know a scandal when she causes one. So, when she hires Foster Johns to fix her roof, the resulting uproar has her needled. The whole town has pinned a five-year-old unsolved double murder on him. Betsy believes Johns when he says he isn’t guilty. But she’ll have to use every stitch of her sleuthing skills to tie up all the loose ends that will prove his innocence once and for all.

(Betsy's first murder to solve was her sisters! Betsy came to crash at her sister's place and get her head together. She ends up solving the murder of her sister and staying to run her sister's, now her's, needlecraft shop. I wish I could visit the shop, it sounds wonderful!)

The Christmas List
by Richard Paul Evans, website

James Kier looked back and forth between the newspaper headline and the photograph of himself, not sure if he should laugh or call his attorney. It was the same photograph the Tribune had used a couple of years earlier when they featured him on the front page of the business section. While the photograph was the same, the headline could not have been more different. Not many people get to read their own obituary.

Local real estate mogul dies in automobile crash

Utah real estate develop James Kier was pronounced dead after his car collided with a concrete pylon on southbound I-80. Authorities believe Kier may have had a heart attack prior to swerving off the road.

Kier put the paper down. He had no idea what the article was about to set in motion.

It's not just Coop's parents who need assistance-Jenni Wright, whose blossoming new business has him making daily deliveries to her property, could clearly use some help. To Jenni, Coop is their UPS guy, handyman, and her boys' guardian angel all in one gorgeous package. She's sure he'd run a mile before getting involved in the chaos of her life. But as Thanksgiving gives way to Christmas, the lovely, resilient Jenni turns Coop's expectations of a cold, lonely winter upside-down, revealing the promise of warmth, love, and a lifetime of happy memories.

I haven't read this one yet...loved the cover!
Scones and Sensibility
by Lindsay Eland, website

Twelve-year-old Polly Madassa is convinced she was born for a more romantic age. A time when Elizabeth Bennet walked along the stone halls of Pemberley, arm in arm with her one true love, Mr. Darcy. A time with Anne Shirley gazed out at the wild seas off Prince Edward Island with her bosom friend, Diana, beside her. A time when a distinguished gentleman called upon a lady of quality, and true love was born in the locked eyes of two young lovers.

But alas…Polly was born in twenty-first century New Jersey.

This however, does not hinder our young heroine from finding romance wherever she can conjure it up. So while Polly is burdened with the summer job of delivering baked goods from her parents’ bakery to the people in her small beach town (how delightfully quaint!), she finds a way to force…um…encourage romance to blossom. Indeed, Polly is determined to bring lovers, young and old, together…whether they want to be or not.

The kids are disgusted with wishes and figure out that Liza is the only one with a wish left. Can Liza bring life back to normal at Bailey School or will the genie win control of Bailey City???

Before there was Harry Potter....
So You Want to be a Wizard
by Diane Duane, author's website

Something stopped Nita's hand as it ran along the bookshelf. She looked and found that one of the books had a loose thread at the top of its spine. It was one of those So You Want to Be a . . . books, a series on careers. So You Want to Be a Pilot, and a Scientist . . . a Writer. But his one said, So You Want to Be a Wizard.

I don't believe this, Nina thought. She shut the book and stood there holding it in her hand, confused, amazed, suspicious—and delighted. If it was a joke, it was a great one. If it wasn't . . . ?

brings out way to many authors: Stella Cameron, Mary Higgins Clark, Tom Clancy, Sheila Connolly, Suzanne Collins, Eoin Colfer, Eric Carle, Melody Carlson, Maureen Child, Jennifer Chiaverini, Cinda Williams Chima, The Accidental Mother by Rowan Coleman, . . . (and yes, I own or have read all of them)

So here's a few I loved once upon a time and some I read recently. (still too many)

Dragon Companion
by Don Callander

Thomas Whitehead, a mild mannered librarian from Iowa becomes magically transported to the magical kingdom of Carolna. Tom soon discovers his new home has knights and castles, magic, and talking dragons.

Tom's life becomes even more complicated when he must take part in driving invaders out of the castle, rescuing a fair princess, and capturing a traitor to the king. Not exactly in a normal librarian's job description...

Death Rides a Chestnut Mare
by Ralph Compton, info at Wikipedia

(great girl kicks a$$ book)

Too many titles to list but this is the one I read most recently...
The Lost Gate
by Orson Scott Card Official Website

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.

He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.

There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny’s cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.

so this is actually #14, I love the cover ;)

As the power of Christmas envelops the little town, Becca discovers that the boy she once loved has become a strong and confident man. And the most delicious Christmas present she can imagine.

Orchid
by Jayne Castle Official Website

Orchid Adams doesn’t fit the profile he had in mind, but she fits in his arms. Will their electrifying connection end up getting them burned?

B? No one comes to mind...oh, Marian Babson! Nevada Barr, Rita Mae Brown (and Sneaky Pie), off to LibraryThing to see who else is in my library.

Jo Beverley! Regency Romance (a several favorites)
Anne may have been the perfect lady once, but twice is her limit! Now she's angry, and to torment her further she has a mysterious, infuriating interloper called Race de Vere to turn her life upside down. And to tempt her to play hazard -- with dice, and with her heart.

~*~*~*~
Rita Mae Brown writes several series and stand alones but my favorite series is Mrs. Murphy. She claims her cat helps her and gives Sneaky Pie co-authorship credit.
Hiss of Death: Ah, spring! The brighter days and singing birds have a way of lifting people’s spirits, as well as those of their animal companions. But the season can also bring out the first blossoms of murder. As the redbuds open in Crozet, Virginia, Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen is especially excited—until a health crisis sends her reeling into the forbidding world of hospitals and doctors, treatments and procedures. Surviving this journey will be tough, but Harry has her animal friends—and her ever-helpful husband, Fair—to support her. Others are considerably less fortunate: A promising nurse’s lifeless body is discovered without a mark on her. Then another hospital employee, who had seemed in perfect health, is also found dead. There’s a mystery afoot—and that’s one thing Harry and her menagerie can’t keep their noses out of.

Marian Babson at Cozy-Mystery.com

a couple of series and LOTS of stand alones. Wish these were re-released as ebooks.

Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series are set in National Parks.

Firestorm: In her capacity as spike camp medic and security officer, Anna is part of the army battling the Jackknife fire in Northern California's Lassen Volcanic National Park. Conditions conspire and turn freakish causing Anna and her crew to be caught in a firestorm. When the storm passes, a crew member is dead, and not due to natural causes...

Dancing with Ana
by Nicole Barker

interesting story about high school girls and anorexia

~*~*~*~

Annette Blair has several series/stand alones but Kitchen Witch was my introduction to her.
When a single-dad TV executive hires Melody Seabright—a flaky rich girl and rumored witch—as his babysitter, she magically lands her own cooking show...and makes sparks fly.

I immediately thought of Piers Anthony. I was introduced to Piers Anthony (and Anne McCaffrey) while in high school. I graduated too many years ago but still read his books!

The first book of three of his series, Xanth is still going strong but the others stopped around 7 books.

He writes more than these, check him out here.

Wanting more than just one, I went through my LibraryThing library :)
