I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

"Waiting On" Wednesday ~~ A-Z Wednesday ~~ Wishful Wednesday

Jill at Breaking the Spine hosts "Waiting On" Wednesday, a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Even Money
Dick Francis, Felix Francis

Putnam Adult
August 24, 2009 (hey, that's today!)
hardcover
368 pages

I usually purchase and read any book by Dick Francis within the week of it's release. Sad it say I haven't read the last one. Will I still buy this one? Oh, Yeah. Just not in the first week :-)

from the publisher:
On the first day of Royal Ascot, the world’s most famous horse race, the crowd rejoices in a string of winning favorites. Ned Talbot has worked all his life as a bookmaker— taking over the family business from his grandfather— so he knows not to expect any sympathy from the punters as they count their winnings, and he his losses. He’s seen the ups and downs before—but, as the big gambling conglomerates muscle in on small concerns like his, Ned wonders if it’s worth it any more.

When a gray-haired man steps forward from the crowd claiming to be his father, Ned’s life is thrown into far deeper turmoil. He’d been told since he was a baby that his parents had died in a car crash.

Barely an hour later, his newly found father is stabbed by an unknown assailant in the Ascot parking lot. Blood oozing from his abdomen, his father warns Ned to “be very careful.” But of whom? Of what? Ned finds himself in a race to solve his father’s riddle—a race where coming in second could cost him more than even money—it could cost him his life. . . .

Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi

This was sent to me, by the author, for review on my blog. Sad to say I haven't done that yet but the book was fabulous.

from the publisher:
"The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.

In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder."

Disaster strikes when the team loses their mascot—the Trout. Is it going too far to ask her to don the costume? So what if her husband has also volunteered her to organize the church Christmas tea. When football playoffs start ramping up, the Christmas tea starts falling apart. Then, one by one her children tell her they can’t come home for Christmas. As life starts to unravel, will Marianne remember the true meaning of the holidays?"

I was going to say that I've been seeing A Circle of Souls all over the place, too.

The great Christmas Bowl looks like it might be a fun holiday read.

A Circle of Souls looks too scary for me but I have seen some really good reviews of it.

How funny that so many people have started thinking about Christmasy reads already. I've been noodling through some titles for the holidays too.

I've heard of Dick Francis but never read any.

The Francis book sounds good.

I'll be looking for Christmas Bowl. I read my first Susan May Warren book a few months ago and liked it!

I haven't read any of that author's (Francis) work but this one sounds interesting.

By the way, I love Ilona Andrews! I've read all her Kate Daniels book. :)
