I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale
Princess Academy, 2005, trade paperback

High on the side of rocky Mount Eskel, far from the valleys where gardens are green and lush, where lowlanders make laws, Miri’s family has lived forever, pounding a living from the stone of the mountain itself. For as long as she can remember, Miri has dreamed of working alongside the other villagers in the quarries of her beloved mountainside. But Miri has never been allowed to work there, perhaps, she thinks, because she is so small.

Then word comes from the valley that the king's priests have divined Mount Eskel to be the home of the prince’s bride-to-be—the next princess. The prince himself will travel to the village to choose her, but first all eligible girls must attend a makeshift mountain academy to prepare themselves for royal lowlander life.

At the school, Miri soon finds herself confronted by bitter competition among the girls and her own conflicting desires to be chosen by the prince. Yet when danger comes to the academy and threatens all their lives, it is Miri, named for a tiny mountain flower, who must find a way to save her classmates—and the one chance to leave the mountain each of them is determined to secure as her own.

SEAL It With A Kiss by Rogenna Brewer
SEAL It With a Kiss, 2016, ebook

To become the first female SEAL, she’ll have to match wits with the best…

Lieutenant Tabitha Chapel is determined to join the Teams. She’s not about to let a little thing like gender get in her way. She’ll use every wile–feminine or otherwise–and her considerable strength of will to win this battle of the sexes. But the limits of her determination are tested by the only Navy SEAL capable of commanding her heart.

Commander Marc Miller is equally determined to keep her out of his program. As the newly appointed CO of BUD/S, he’s been tasked with cleaning up SEAL Training. He doesn’t need a red-hot redhead compounding the problem. For him Hell Week begins when one well-connected junior officer walks into his office.

The last thing he wants is to be her commanding officer when the only thing he wants is her. The only way to have her––and the surest way to lose her––is to see that she fails.

Will love conquer all or tear them apart?

A Cougar's Cry by A.M. Halford  (facebook)
Itayu Lake, 2016, ebook

Logan’s tired of being pushed away and refused by his mate. When Jared declares their pairing unnatural he finally decides enough is enough.

Jared’s family has drilled into him that only water dragons are to be trusted. He’s confused and scared when he learns his destined mate is a cougar, not a water dragon. So he acts rashly and forces him away, realizing too late that he’s made a mistake. As he watches his mate sit helplessly in a hospital bed, he swears to change.

To allow Logan to heal, and for them to come together as mates, Jared takes them to Itayu Lake. There he starts to question when he started to accept his Sire’s words, and the horrors of his own past come to light.

Logan must try and forgive Jared for everything he’s done so he can help his mate come to terms with what has happened to him. Matters are further complicated when Jared’s mother arrives with the goal of taking all of her sons back with her.

The Brac Pack by Lynn Hagen
The Brac Pack, 2011, ebook bundle

This contains the complete series. There are 5 books, each dealing with a different couple.

Maverick Brac has formed a pack of his own, and they all have one thing in common, the preference for men. Each book takes us through one of the pack meeting their mate and the problems that follow. 'Cause, you know, even happy every after can start out on shaky ground.

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter
Nocturne Falls, 2015, ebook

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year. The tourists think it’s all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.

Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.

Sebastian Ellingham isn’t known for being a happy vampire. And when his long estranged wife returns expecting to pick up where they left off, things take a sharp turn toward cranky. Sure he’s been protecting her for centuries, but her assumption that he’s still available (he is) rankles.

His answer is to hire a woman to play his fiancĂ©e. The lucky victim is Tessa Blythe, sister of one of the town’s deputies, librarian in need of a job and, oh yes, reluctant Valkyrie. Playing along with Sebastian is all about the end game: earning the position of Dean of Library Studies at the local private academy.

When unexpected sparks fly between them, they agree to mutually deny the attraction. Fate, however, has other plans…

Most of these are between 100 and 200 pages with quite a few under 100 pages. I got more read this month then Jan and Feb. The sad thing is that I got more of other things done in Jan Feb! So April better not have as many pages read.

Thoughts On . . . Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly

Wait, what?

This is a series about a dental office in a small town of shifters. All kinds of shifters. Think about it, where does a werelion go to get his teeth fixed when it is his lion's teeth that hurt?

The series is super fun, paranormal/shifter also romantic and gay. Did I lose anyone? The author has a prequel to the first book on her website, here. Each book is a different couple and all are on the short side. I'd love to see all the books and the prequel in print together.

Book Blurb:
The sexy chipmunk shifter isn’t afraid of the dentist; he’s in love with him.

Phillip has the best job working at the Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly. As a chipmunk shifter, Phillip has seen handsome men walk through the door but none so gorgeous as his boss and wolf shifter, Dr. Gunner Samuels. When he finds himself being manipulated by his best friend to ask the big bad wolf over for dinner, Phillip realizes his biggest dilemma, he’s never cooked a day in his life, let alone meat. Can Phillip pull off a fabulous dinner for two? And has Gunner had his eye on the sexy shifter all this time?

My Thoughts:
A chipmunk moves to town to work in the dental office. Book one is about him and his boss. Yes, an office romance! Finally Phillip, our chipmunk, asks his boss to dinner. Two problems. Not only does Phillip not cook, he's a vegetarian and doesn't even like the smell of meat. Problem two? His boss is a wolf.

Yes, there is a happy ending, this is fun, fictional romance after all, but the couple does have problems to work out.

I'm serious about the book being short so I can't tell you too much about it. The title should tell you how the cooking goes, the HEA should tell you it turns out well. What I haven't mentioned is the Mom who is worried about her first, and youngest, child that has left home. The 20 siblings. The serious nut storage issue that the chipmunks have. Oh, and the Mom. Did I mention her? Well, she bares repeating.

Book 2: Stalking the Hygienist
This time it is about Phillip's best friend the hygienist, a deer. And a lion. Yup, you read that right.

Book 3: Chipmunk Drizzled in Honey
Phillips brother NIkko comes to visit. Phillip and Nikko were the close growing up so it is natural that he is the first to come visit Phillip in White Pine. Now, Dallas doesn’t know if he wants to push the spunky chipmunk away or make love to him.

Book 3.5: A Paranormal Chipmunk Christmas
It’s time for the chipmunk brothers to take their bear and wolf home to meet the family for the holidays. Think about that. It is stressful enough to visit family at Christmas but there are all those siblings!

Book 4: Hot on a Chipmunk's Tail
Jason has a chance to move to White Pine. Will, his neighbor at home, has feelings for Jason but while Jason does have feelings for Will, he always clams up then runs. It doesn't help that Jason is a chipmunk that prefers to go unnoticed and Will is a mountain lion. This story is about Jason's introduction to life mostly on his own, what happens when Will shows up (you knew he would), and the antics of two of the brothers that came with Jason, the troublesome twins.

Book 5: A White Pine Chipmunk Invasion
Last year, Nikko and Phillip went home for Christmas. This year home comes to White Pine. Yes, Mom and Dad and all the kids have arrived.

Also, one of the twins, Winslow, is dating a crocodile that owns one of the few businesses that doesn't have a ban on the twins coming inside! So this is really Winslow's story that happens at Christmas while the family is visiting.

Happy Pi Day

This is what I was doing last year but I was unable to find one for this year that I wanted to do. Maybe next year, it will go back to 3.14.
A lot of talk this year is about rounding up to 3.1416 and that just seems wrong to me.

Last year there was a physical race as well as a virtual one. Instead of measuring out 3.1 miles, they did 3.1415! I did my race on the treadmill, which only goes to two decimals so my distance was 3.15.

White Lies by Linda Howard
romantic suspense, 2016-reissue, ebook!

Nothing could have prepared Jay Granger for the arrival of two FBI agents at her door -- or for the news they brought. Her ex-husband, Steve, had been in a terrible accident that had left him gravely injured. The FBI needed Jay to confirm his identity.

The man Jay finds lying in the hospital bed is almost unrecognizable. Almost. Exhausted and afraid, Jay tentatively declares that he is Steve Crossfield. But the man who awakens from the coma is not at all as Jay remembers her husband. And he remembers nothing of their life together. Suddenly nothing is familiar. Not his appearance, not the intensity of his nature, not the desire that flashes between them. Who is this man? And will the discovery of his identity shatter the passion they share?
