I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Thoughts On . . . Cisco's Boy

Cisco's Boy
by A. C. Katt

Indiscreet, book 3
Published By: MLR Press, LLC
Published: Nov 2013
ISBN # 9781106038982
approx 220 pages
genre: romance-male/male, very sexy, HEA

author's website | Facebook

Book Description:
Master Cisco de Loria wants everything from his new sub Greg Harris, that is everything but love, in fact his contract expressly forbids it.

Dr. Greg Harris finally has the money to buy a submissive membership at Indiscreet, a gay BDSM club. The only thing he wants is to have Dr. Cisco de Loria as his Master. Cisco wants Greg too, but the one thing Greg most wants to give, Cisco refuses to take, Greg's love. Cisco is so sure he doesn't need love that he puts it in as a clause in their contract. If Greg ever mentions love, the contract is terminated. Cisco finds out the hard way that things somehow don't always work out the way you plan.

My Thoughts
(written as I read, crossing fingers there are no spoilers)

I first met Cisco and Greg while reading The Sunset Club series and was delighted to read that four of the characters had their own stories in the Indiscreet series.

I'm totally okay with BDSM stories but I think I've been spoiled by my own research and other writers. This D/s relationship, so far, doesn't feel correct. Several things come up during their first day that should have come during contract negotiations. Things an experienced Dom would have known about - at the very least, the club owner moderating the negotiations should have brought them up.

I love the characters themselves from the other series and their interactions with each other - I have high hopes for this book. Wish me luck!

grr . . .  Barebacking? Really? Is it still the first day? It wasn't even discussed! I'm really not sure about this series. If I didn't know about this couple from the other series that they show up in, I'd be trying to return this book.

back to reading, keeping my fingers crossed.

Getting better but the brand new sub and not quite a Dom qualities are showing through. It appears that Cisco doesn't really want a sub because he's a Dom, he wants a 24/7 (except work) maid/cook/boy-friend that he doesn't have to love. Oh, and total control of all the money. I'm hoping he gets his head out of his ass soon, I'm half way through the book.

Yes, yes, I know that even with a lot of mainstream couples, one partner has more control over the money than the other. My problem is that Cisco doesn't take the time to share with his sub how much money they have so when he buys a new Audi, on day two, the sub only has his own paycheck for reference and he's giving 75% of it to the Dom! How the hell is he (the sub) supposed to afford keep a new car in six months when the contract is up?

sigh, back to reading

Damn, communication is so important. Also add here a wow, that's a LOT of drama for only five days.

back to the book

Oh I was expecting the trouble (you'll be able to spot it too) but, wow, that was over the top! At least Greg gets his happy ever after. And they finally learn to communicate. Not really a spoiler

Final words: This was book 3 of the series but the first I've read. So, will I continue? Yes, I'll get the books that have Brian and Jim in them. Maybe the rest if they stay on sale.

one last edit: I've since read book 6 in the series and the writing/relationship issures flows much better.

Thoughts On . . . Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly

Wait, what?

This is a series about a dental office in a small town of shifters. All kinds of shifters. Think about it, where does a werelion go to get his teeth fixed when it is his lion's teeth that hurt?

The series is super fun, paranormal/shifter also romantic and gay. Did I lose anyone? The author has a prequel to the first book on her website, here. Each book is a different couple and all are on the short side. I'd love to see all the books and the prequel in print together.

Book Blurb:
The sexy chipmunk shifter isn’t afraid of the dentist; he’s in love with him.

Phillip has the best job working at the Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly. As a chipmunk shifter, Phillip has seen handsome men walk through the door but none so gorgeous as his boss and wolf shifter, Dr. Gunner Samuels. When he finds himself being manipulated by his best friend to ask the big bad wolf over for dinner, Phillip realizes his biggest dilemma, he’s never cooked a day in his life, let alone meat. Can Phillip pull off a fabulous dinner for two? And has Gunner had his eye on the sexy shifter all this time?

My Thoughts:
A chipmunk moves to town to work in the dental office. Book one is about him and his boss. Yes, an office romance! Finally Phillip, our chipmunk, asks his boss to dinner. Two problems. Not only does Phillip not cook, he's a vegetarian and doesn't even like the smell of meat. Problem two? His boss is a wolf.

Yes, there is a happy ending, this is fun, fictional romance after all, but the couple does have problems to work out.

I'm serious about the book being short so I can't tell you too much about it. The title should tell you how the cooking goes, the HEA should tell you it turns out well. What I haven't mentioned is the Mom who is worried about her first, and youngest, child that has left home. The 20 siblings. The serious nut storage issue that the chipmunks have. Oh, and the Mom. Did I mention her? Well, she bares repeating.

Book 2: Stalking the Hygienist
This time it is about Phillip's best friend the hygienist, a deer. And a lion. Yup, you read that right.

Book 3: Chipmunk Drizzled in Honey
Phillips brother NIkko comes to visit. Phillip and Nikko were the close growing up so it is natural that he is the first to come visit Phillip in White Pine. Now, Dallas doesn’t know if he wants to push the spunky chipmunk away or make love to him.

Book 3.5: A Paranormal Chipmunk Christmas
It’s time for the chipmunk brothers to take their bear and wolf home to meet the family for the holidays. Think about that. It is stressful enough to visit family at Christmas but there are all those siblings!

Book 4: Hot on a Chipmunk's Tail
Jason has a chance to move to White Pine. Will, his neighbor at home, has feelings for Jason but while Jason does have feelings for Will, he always clams up then runs. It doesn't help that Jason is a chipmunk that prefers to go unnoticed and Will is a mountain lion. This story is about Jason's introduction to life mostly on his own, what happens when Will shows up (you knew he would), and the antics of two of the brothers that came with Jason, the troublesome twins.

Book 5: A White Pine Chipmunk Invasion
Last year, Nikko and Phillip went home for Christmas. This year home comes to White Pine. Yes, Mom and Dad and all the kids have arrived.

Also, one of the twins, Winslow, is dating a crocodile that owns one of the few businesses that doesn't have a ban on the twins coming inside! So this is really Winslow's story that happens at Christmas while the family is visiting.

Mack has a fight ahead of him if he wants to break the red-haired devil who’s haunted him for so long…

Mack Wilson gave his heart and virginity to the only man he swore he’d ever love. Justin threw that love back at him a day later, mocking Mack and his feelings. Mack never got past it, or Justin’s abandonment. Justin left the day after he and Mack made love, and over a decade later, Mack gets the shock of his life when he’s watching a wild, beautiful untamed red stallion throw a hell of a hissy fit in the corral. The horse reminds him of Justin. Mack is still raw from the pain, never having got past it.

Then Justin is there, ripping away the bandages of their past and pulling all the hurt and anger out of Mack, refusing to let Mack run him off. Refusing to let Mack go.

Mack hates Justin—doesn’t he? Or will he listen to Justin and give a chance to try to make amends? Can he make amends, when there’s someone waiting to tear them apart—again?

~*~*~
The heartache and the anger leaches off the pages. The love, sex and understanding come through just as strong. There is a fabulous twist and another one out of left field.  My only complaint is there isn't enough of the horse in the story but that may be my cowgirl-heart speaking.

I'm hoping this is the start of a series.

Ian McCain’s always been one cold, hard man, but a sexy little cook is about to melt his heart.

Drake loves his job as a cook at the Mossy Glenn Ranch. He just wishes he wasn’t scared out of his mind. His ex has him convinced he’s never going to be loved again, so he vows to remain alone.

Officer Ian McCain doesn’t play well with others—unless he’s got a whip or paddle in his hand and a sub at his feet. Control is all he’s had for years now, and he doesn’t think he’s capable of having a relationship.

Then he pulls up at the Mossy Glenn and sees a sexy man with a cute puppy on a leash. From that moment on, Drake might as well have Ian on a leash too, or at least his heart. Ian breaks down Drake’s walls almost as fast as Drake destroys his.

But their chance for a happy life together is something they’re both going to have to fight for as Drake faces his fears and Ian faces losing everything.

~*~*~
This one had lots of sex but it was also full of understanding and love. And bullets.

Book two continues with puppy training and police reports. Ian and Drake find friends in unlikely places and surprises both good and bad.

I'm still wondering what's up with Salt. Maybe his story is next. Whoever is next, I'll be buying that one too.

Pascal Durant, one of the best mountain riders in the cycling world, was about to finally win his first polka-dot jersey denoting him King of the Mountains in the Tour de France. Then he suffered a horrific accident that left him unable to complete the race. In his forties and fighting chronic injuries, he knows he only has one more shot at the top.

Laurent Desrochers, an internationally known reporter, hears about his dear friend’s crash and watches a moving viral video of Pascal, bloodied yet unbowed, congratulating the winner. When Pascal tells him he’s going to do the Tour one last time, Laurent decides to convince his network to let him follow Pascal on his quest.

Friends for a decade, they had never thought of the other as more. Pascal’s focus on his sport and poor taste in men has never produced a long-term relationship. And Laurent’s constant travel causes a rift between him and his fiancé Jan that proves insurmountable.

Laurent finally realises his ideal partner has been in front of him all along. Can he pull Pascal’s focus from his goal long enough for him to know he’s being chased...and let Laurent catch him?

~*~*~
I love the way the authors were able to bring the excitement of race to the page. There were lots of interactions with team members as well as support personal. The story isn't drawn out or technical as it is fast as well as soul searching. Pascal does a lot of introspective thinking while waiting for the starting gun. The friendship of the two men is like your favorite sweatshirt. The slide into lovers as smooth as silk.

You know this is a happy-ever-after kind of book but the will he or won't he excitement is still there. And the ending of the book was perfect.

When Seth, a Keeper of the Gods, finds the two men he is destined to live eternity with, he must defy the very Gods themselves to save his mates and preserve the existence of man and love.

Discovering love with the one person who is fated to compliment everything that you are is blessing enough, but what do you do when another knight in shining armor sweeps you off your feet?

Jamie found a second chance at life when Loland rescued him from the ignorance and abuse of those who should have protected him. For years they struggled together to cope with Jamie's powers of precognition and his ability to absorb energy from living things.

After centuries of waiting for his other half, Seth finally met Loland, a man that embodied all he'd ever dreamt of in a mate. Meeting Loland's lover, Jamie, and finding that they are both his mates only made the pot sweeter. But while exploring the love they find as mates and the D/s relationships they crave, all three must challenge the will of the Gods and the twisted plans of Jamie's mysterious family.

Ultimately, Seth knows there is nothing he wouldn't do to save the lives and love of his mates.
~*~*~
Oh, boy. Truly a a good example of BDSM.

Jamie and Loland are both subs without a Sir. Loland is searching but Jamie can hardly leave the house and when Loland brings the man he wants to be his Sir home, Jamie takes a swing at him with a baseball bat! Not the easiest of meetings.

Jamie is fearful but strong, loyal to a fault and willing to do what he must. Loland is overprotective, with good reason. And Seth. Seth is a Dom. A good one. One used to being obeyed, willing to be patient with new subs, and quickly losing his heart to both men.

dang, I read book two before writing this.... let's see. Fighting, kidnapping, angry Gods, angrier Keepers, and several half-Gods (offspring of a God and a Keeper). One of the half-Gods has an attitude, just like a rotten apple, giving all half-Gods a bad name. The most sadistic of his behavior is off-screen, we just see the results. Wait, a spiked ball gag? Shudder, I think that was the worst.

But, after everything is said and done this is a love story. The three main characters is this story are having a horrible time but they are working on a relationship that is a love story.

When you come to the end of a ten-year search, what comes next?

As an eight-year-old, Zeke Straus couldn’t help his big brother Kade when their father kicked him out, but he vowed to find him no matter what it took. At the age of eighteen, Zeke struck out on his own to fulfil that promise. Now, after ten years of fruitless searching and living in run-down motel rooms, he lands yet another bartender job. The last thing Zeke expects is the attraction he feels for the club’s owner.

When Fallon’s on Fifth closes after its owner’s conviction, Reid Jackson and his best friend Alec Demakis decide to buy the bar and turn it into Clean Slate. When a sexy as sin bartender walks through the door to apply for a position, Reid finds he has several in mind he’d like to try with Zeke…

Kade Straus overcame his past and found the love of his life in partner Lark. Although he’s thought of the brother he left behind often, guilt has kept him from contacting his family for twenty years. When he hears that a Zeke Straus with a matching birth date was hired to work at a friend’s bar, he has little choice but to leave Cattle Valley and come face to face with a past he’s never confessed to Lark.

Zeke is torn between his unexpected feelings for Reid and reconnecting with the brother he’s devoted his adult life to searching for. He’s never found a place he wanted to settle down before, so now that his journey’s at an end, how will he choose where to make his home?

~*~*~
This one could possibly be read as a stand-alone. The pain Zeke felt when his brother didn't come back comes through very well. So does his confusion about Reid and his feelings about his brother. I really liked this addition to the series.

A short, intense story full of insecurity, best friends, family, bigotry, hatred, and a possible happy ever after. It ended well but I still have questions.

Rajan Malik has the world of Bollywood in the palm of his hand—a beautiful girlfriend, starring roles, adoring fans… He should be happy, but behind the façade lies a man conflicted and exhausted by the pressure placed on him by his terminally ill mother, his agent and society. His life is not his own, and all he wants to do is escape.

Indian Premier League cricketer Ajay Singh can’t believe how bad his university roommate Rajan looks when he spots his picture in the paper. They had parted on bad terms. Still, he’s moved to offer Rajan his support by renewing their friendship.

But friendship was not all they shared back then. Though Ajay is out, Rajan isn’t willing to give up his carefully cultivated Bollywood image to be with him publicly. And with very little privacy, it won’t take long for someone to find out they are more than friends.

Their renewed secret affair is fraught with difficulties as they deal with the death of Rajan’s mother, the secret of Rajan’s till-now absent father, a jealous friend, the intrusive media and threatening notes from someone who seems to know all about their private lives…

It’s a bit of a sticky wicket they find themselves in. Will it be too late when they finally realise that they’ll both need to compromise, or they’ll stand to lose everything?

~*~*~
What's a man to do when the love of his life is not only in the closet but is being run ragged by a controlling mother, agent and co-star?

I really wanted to shake Rajan. He's exhausted, doesn't want to do another film right away but doesn't say anything when his agent announces it is a done deal. His house is not a hideaway, heck anyone can get in and usually do, tour bus regularly stop and stare. Add to this a stalker and Ajay's offer of a place to hide becomes a lifeline.

I must tell you that I ended up liking everyone, even the stalker.

Mr Nolan’s last relationship lasted for over two decades. But, since suddenly finding himself single two years ago, he has struggled to find a submissive who can fill the void in his life. Maybe a temporary arrangement is exactly what he needs to ease him back into the lifestyle he loves so much.

Mark’s never experienced life under the protection of a good dom. He’s merely had a series of abusive partners. He’s used to being treated as a temporary feature in a man’s life, then thrown away when they tire of him.

When mutual friends push them together, the last thing Mr Nolan or Mark expects is to end up hoping a temporary collar will become permanent.

~*~*~
I'm just as angry as Edward as to the men who say they are Doms but have such total lack of regards for the men in their care. They are not "Doms" and are as a rotten apple, spoiling the rest of the barrel (the world's view) of the whole D/s culture.

okay, off soapbox

What's a man to do when his friends show up late a night asking for a favor?

Edward takes in a submissive who was disowned by his last Dom, left on his own at a club with only the clothes on his back. And it turns out, he's injured.

Mark hasn't had any proper training, doesn't realize that being a submissive can be more than about pain, doesn't realize that the sub chooses the Dom. Now add in the fact that Edward's sub has been dead for two years, they'd been together 20+ years, and he hasn't replaced him and poor Mark has a serious case of insecurity.

The story is short, sweet and fast, taking place mostly over the weekend. I liked that both characters had insecurities and the author let us hear their inner monologue.

Beautiful ending.

I knew going in that they'd end up a couple, after all, I'd already read book 3. Only, the interactions were so good that there we several places where I seriously doubted it would ever have a happy ending.
