My Thoughts:
Granted I'm not the target audience not do I have a little one to read to but I still love picture books. This one is just cute. Not fabulous, just cute. I was thinking the fairy-tale was the boy who cried wolf when the boy showed up but the three little pigs showed up too.

I like Gertrude and Toby. Their friendship shows through but I'm not sure about the sneaking off part of the story. I like that Gertrude was willing to help someone he didn't know (the boy) then later was willing to give up something (the fish) to save everyone from the wolf.

I would get it if I had a little one but I would hope that it wasn't one they wanted to have read to them over and over and over again.

So many children's books remain close to our hearts long after we first read them. But which ones are the can't-miss favorites, those that will last a lifetime? The Amazon Book editors set out to compile a list of 100 Children's Books to Read in a Lifetime that included classics from years gone by, classics in the making, the serious, the silly, the surreal--children's literature has it all. We chose the books based on the idea of selecting the 100 that cover the years from birth (those first well-worn titles) up to age 12. Of course, the age at which people read these may vary wildly, but we tried to pick books that would feel significant in the years leading up to becoming a teenager, and be warmly remembered all their lives. And, naturally, we didn't want the list to feel like homework. We talked and argued and reminisced about the books we read when we were kids, the ones we've read to our own children, and the ones we've discovered since. The result is our list of 100 favorites.

Sixteen-year-old Jessica is a runner. It's not just what she does, it's who she is. So when a tragic accident causes her to lose one of her legs, she is shattered--inside and out.

Though the doctors say she'll be able to walk with a prosthetic limb, recovery is slow and full of pitfalls. Jessica wonders if the girl who died in the accident didn't get the better end of the deal. But as she struggles to reclaim her life, Jessica get to know Rosa--a girl with cerebral palsy whom she and her friends had always overlooked. Not only does Rosa come to Jessica's rescue in math, she also help her reach for a future that is full of unexpected opportunities.

And Jessica starts to wonder: Is it possible not only to walk again, but to run?


My Thoughts:
Wow. This is one of those "I laughed, I cried, I wanted to slap someone upside the head" type books.  ;-)

I didn't bother reading the back again before I read the book. Just jumped right in and we're at the hospital after surgery. Jessica is understandable depressed but I've seen Amy dance (Dancing with the Stars) so I'm thinking Jessica needs a small slap/wake up. On the other hand, I don't believe I'd be doing as well.

It's a little "High School Drama" but Jessica is on a high school track team. There is the cute popular boy she likes. The Rival's head games that she finally works around. The girl on the team only because a team sport will look good on a collage application-and the track team doesn't cut.  But this is so much more than a book about a teen who want to run again. It's not about the stares or the mean girls. It's about teamwork, family, and growing up. About friendship and never giving up. She's got family, a terrific best friend, a great coach, and Rosa.

Oh, man. Rosa becomes like a secret weapon.

This is a book about becoming a better person, even if you have help.

Vanessa's mom gets it but I don't know if Vanessa ever will.

edit: You might want to have tissues handy before starting to read. I cried all over my shirt because I didn't want to put the book down.

Description:
The prince, who starred in the book The Prince Who Was Just Himself, may be a little slower than other students, but he has no less joy in learning. In his kingdom, children go to school on sailing ships. There is a ship for girls and one for boys. There is a ship for children with an eye patch, a ship for children with one leg, and a ship for children who are slower learners. No one knows why there are so many different ships, but it has always been that way.

Then a terrible storm drives the ships into the hands of pirates. The boys and girls realize that they will only escape if everyone does what he or she does best. Through their adventures, they learn that diversity makes us strong and that every person has something to teach us.


My Thoughts:
I liked that it was recognized "Someone who can do so much belongs in school!" I was disappointed that each group was separate, because it had "always been done that way".

"The girls spent their days painting, embroidering, weaving, and knitting." Too bad for the girl who wants to learn Math, because "Math has never been taught to girls".

It didn't really get any better for the boys or the other groups. At least Prince Noah was having fun.

Then along comes the pirates! One of the students said the storm was coming but the adults couldn't see any clouds so they ignored him.

I love that the kids all work together to get free of the pirates, find their teachers, and get home. I really love that the adults learned that just because it has always been done that way doesn't mean there might not be another way.

This book has the same great illustrations as the first and a worthy addition to any school or public library. Or just a home library where they're not afraid of someone who is different.

The royal couple is looking forward to their third child. “He looks a little different,” muses the king at Prince Noah’s arrival. “He is not like the others,” agrees the queen. Soon they notice what a very special person he is, even though he can’t do everything his brothers can.

When the youngest prince disarms the cruel knight Scarface, the nation’s most dreaded enemy, with an act of compassion, everyone finally realizes how good it is that each person is unique.


My Thoughts
First I need to say that this is not a beginner reader's picture book. The words are on every other page like you'd expect with a picture book but this book has a more words per page, covering one-quarter of each two page spread. Two pictures cover the other three-quarters. This I like very much. I also like the illustrations.

The story doesn't come right out and say something like "this child has Down syndrome" or anything like that. The Queen and the King both mention that he looks different but the siblings accept him right away. The town people are horrid but Prince Noah is just happy to be out in the sun.

Like all good picture books, something bad almost happens but Prince Noah saves the day and all the town people love him. Prince Noah doesn't really care, he's just happy to be out in the sun.

Moral of the story? Be accepting, we are all different from each other as well as being the same. And then there's enjoy the journey for it is good to be out in the sun ;-)

I'm sad that I don't have a little one to read this too!


There is a follow up book where Prince Noah heads to school and deals with pirates. I've added the book to my shopping cart ;-)

This one is all about dusting off the review books (any format) you've had for six months or longer. There are prizes and requests for quarterly reports so decide how many books you'll get reviewed from your back log.

Find out just how naughty are you--when it comes to books, of course! This challenge is all about the naughty and exploring the gloriously kinky world of romance. There's a "pervy" checklist and the goal is to work your way through as many as possible during the year.

Must review, even if it is short!

Set your pervy girl goal then get to reading! Once you've read it...review it then link it up in the review linky. Reviews don't have to be long. Even a sentence or two is awesome.

What Counts

• Books MUST be read in 2016
• All book formats count!
• Re-reads and Challenge cross overs count!
• Books can count for only ONE checklist item each

Anyone can join! If you don't have a blog you can use a dedicated shelf on Goodreads or similar.

There's a FB group for the challenge--join to get book suggestions, socialize and get event news!

The Facebook group is a closed group.
There are six levels to choose from, from 6 books to 50+!
There are more than 80 items on the checklist but if you don't find yours, submit it!
Try for novellas or longer (books over 70 pages) but short stories work too.

Need to ask: Books don't have to be only about the checklist item, just the one scene?


I'm going to start easy with with level 1: Sweet and Innocent and will read AND review six books. I'll pick the books first then find where it fit on the pervy checklist. I'm sure the last sixteen books I read will fit the list but I've got to review them too!

Well, for being unprepared, I didn't do too badly. Several of my posts were late in the day and one was the next day but I got something for all the letters! There was no theme although Disneyland showed up frequently - gotta post about what you're doing!

I didn't visit as much as last year and for that I'm sorry and very happy the list will be up so I can drop in this summer.

I have no criticisms for the way the challenge is run and no ideas how it can be better. I only know that next year I can be better about visits - for that is half the fun!

I'll leave the letter links up top for the summer so you'll be able to find letters easier. I think I should also put up a post with the actual "H is for - Hollywood" so you can find what you're interested in.

Summer is my downtime and I'm starting early by adding May - see you in September!

Z is Zoom and Zootopia
Another Disneyland related post but it's short ;-)

We were able to get a picture taken with Lt. Hopps and Nick Wilde.

They were in California Adventures near the building where the Aladdin show was (and don't get me started on them closing it for a Frozen something or other)


This says Zoom Back Soon! and is on the walkways between parking structures. The walkways go over the exit ramp.

That's all I got. A bunch of miscellaneous and/or personal stuff. I'd love if you came back but I'll be taking most of the summer off. Just a couple of reading challenges, a few reviews and maybe Purrsday - love those cats.

I can't believe I missed one! Oh, I have been having trouble with my phone and laptop syncing photos so I'm sure that's the trouble. Anyways, we went to Disneyland Monday and my husband noticed the name of the cast member at the turnstile, I'm so glad she let me take a picture.

X is for X-ray
What else? Sure I'm getting away with an easy X but I had a chest x-ray recently so it's been on my mind.

I am a survivor of a massive pulmonary embolism. The doctors mentioned that there were lots of little clots in both lungs before the big one came through. I spent a week in the hospital (and only got to go home because our adult son was home with me) and six weeks months on blood thinners then pronounced clear. Now that I'm trying to get 2,016 miles in this year I was worried about "lots of little clots in both lungs" so I had a chest x-ray.

I'm clean.

So that's my X post, have a X-mas tree ;-)
