I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Fairy Tale
source: Public Library

Amelia, the fourth sister in a line of princesses, is sure her red hair and non-princessy ways–not to mention being the last-born–will mean an easy life of never being queen. But when an ancient curse comes to life, an evil uncle tries to take over their peaceful kingdom, and her three sisters are turned into a tree and two swans, Amelia and her best friend Henry must gather the forces of her magically blessed family, and save Gosling from complete destruction.

~*~*~

This is a fairy tale and as such is scary even if it is a middle school age book.

There is a Princess (four actually), a villain, several good-guys-can't-lead people. A plague takes out the King and Queen, the eldest Princess isn't 18 so the uncle comes to rule for something like six weeks but tricks three of the sisters into giving him the kingdom. This works because he doesn't know about the fourth and when he finds out about her, he tells the people she is dead.

Wow. There were several times I had to put the book down and read something light-hearted. Friends show up unexpectedly but so do enemies!

. . . back to reading

sigh. Bring tissues.

Teamwork. Belief in oneself and in others'. Even one who feels ordinary can be or do something extraordinary.

Good will prevail. . .

and evil will get what is coming to them.

Emiel wants to be the dutiful son and make his parents proud. But at what cost to himself? He needs help, and all of his friends are so wrapped up in their own new matings he’s lost. Yet like the selfless man he is, he puts that all to the side when he finds there’s someone else that needs a friend more than he does and helps Aldis’s breathtaking younger brother.

After being tricked by a coven leader, Sealey’s given up the idea of being anything other than a chew toy for a bunch of vampires. But hope just might come in the form of a gorgeous, massive elephant shifter. Will he be able to let Emiel heal his heart, or is his ability to trust anyone destroyed? And how is Emiel going to make Sealey his when he’s still engaged and risks losing everything if he breaks it off?
~*~*~
There comes a point when "being a dutiful child" is wrong. Maybe it's just me but marrying someone your parents approve of (not an arranged marriage) that you don't love...in fact, is of the wrong sex... is wrong. So for much of the book I just wanted to slap Emiel upside the head.

That is a sign of a great character isn't it? The reader's strong reaction?

Then there was the frustration because of the lack of action by those who were supposed to care. I was very happy with the way things ended and glad to see there was another book.

When the vampires come after Lachlan, his father sends him to America, but that still puts Lachlan in a precarious situation… One that he doesn’t want his family dying over to try to save him from. So when the stunning rhino shifter makes him an offer that would keep everyone safe, he has to take it.

Even if it means using himself as the bargaining chip and being mated to an elder.

Percival was already trying to help, but when he sees the youngest McMurray, he figures out how to get the authority he needs over the vampires and snag the most gorgeous man he’s ever met. Now if he could just figure out what Lachlan wants before driving them both crazy.

But when Lachlan realizes it’s not a partner that Percival wants, but an uncomplicated, permanent boy toy, can he deal with that and be what his mate desires?
~*~*~
Oh man. This was the perfect example of what happens when you don't communicate! We've already got the vamps being bad guys (okay, one clan) but there were times I was thinking the Elder that was supposed to be the hero of the story was one of the bad guys!

Love the fight scenes, the meeting with the werewolf Alpha and the happy-ever-after. Please Ms. Flynn? Write another!

When his cousin is forced to mate by UPAC, Aldis uses the excuse of bringing Dor’s stuff to his new home to check and make sure everything is really okay. What he didn’t prepare for is the sexiest man he’s ever seen to open the door… And proposition him.

Gawain can’t believe his luck when the sweetest little minx agrees to go to bed with him. And he’s a skunk shifter too! He’s dreamed about experiencing the things they can do.

While everything is amazing in the bed they jumped right into, the rest is a joke. So when there’s a problem with UPAC, Gawain snatches the chance to prove to Aldis that he’s so much more than hot skunk sex to him. But when Gawain’s past comes back to haunt him, will Aldis stand with him, or will it be another reason for him to walk away?

~*~*~
Oh, wow. This was so much better than expected! Sure the sex is still hot but Gawain's story and the interaction between characters is fantastic. Aldis worry over his younger brother is heart-wrenching (there has to be a story there), his concern for his cousin is heart-warming but the reason he came to Florida is all too real.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could all afford to hire a plane to run from bad relationships!

Is telling you there is a twist a spoiler? Well, doesn't matter now. The twist came out of left field! And in keeping with the baseball analogy, the resolution was a home run.

Terrific Tuesdays

Dark Predator and What the Duke Desires

Hosted at Bibliophile by the Sea
Every Tuesday, she'll be posting the opening paragraph (maybe two) of her current read. Why don't you join us?

Smoke burned his lungs. It rose around him in bellowing waves, fed by the numerous fires in the surrounding rain forest. It  had been a long, hard-fought battle, but it was over, and he was done. Most of the main house was gone, but he's managed to save the homes of the people who served them. Few lives were lost, but each one was mourned--but not by hum. He stared at the flames with hollow eyes. He felt nothing. He looked on the faces of the dead, honorable men who had served his family well, saw their weeping widows and their crying children, and he felt--nothing.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme,
hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
1. Grab your current read Open to a random page
2. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page ~BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!~ make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!
3. Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Maman had been wrong to place all her faith in Papa. All it had gained was grief for her and her children.
Lisette dashed away fresh tears. Well, she would never be so foolish. First chance she got, she would make her own way in this world, no matter what it took. She wasn't going through this kind of betrayal ever again.

I feel bad for her but what exactly does a female in 1828 England do when she is the illegitimate daughter of a dead Viscount and there is no support from the current Viscount?

  • Now don't let the word 'horror' scare you away. You only have to read one scary book during the duration of the read-a-thon. However, that book can be horror, paranormal, thriller, mystery, etc. The rest of the read-a-thon, you can read whatever you want. More horror/scary stuff or just your regular reading repertoire.

  • As always, this is a week long read-a-thon, but you can join in and read whenever it's convenient for you. It's all about being laid back and getting some reading done...with a little bit of scary thrown in.

  • We will also have a few scheduled Twitter chats again. I will announce the times in the starting line post. Our Twitter hashtag is #SpringHorrorRAT

  • You do not have to have a blog. You can sign up using your Goodreads, Twitter, or Facebook accounts.

I'm hoping to do much better than last year.

Still unread books from last year's list
Code Blood by Kurt Kamm
Unwelcome by Michael Griffo
Asgard Park by Ronald Simonar
Devil's Food Cake Murder by Joanne Fluke
Death of a Kitchen Diva by Lee Hollis
Double Booked for Murder by Ali Brandon
Skirting the Grave by Annette Blair
Buzz Off! by Hannah Reed
Murder of a Creped Suzette by Denise Swanson
Mariposa by Greg Bear

Last year, I read four books. 1 - espionage, conspiracy, 1 - horror, comedy, 2 - paranormal romance

Goal for this year
I hope to read four again this year:
and she was by Alison Gaylin - suspense (missing child)
The Extra-Ordinary Princess by Garolyn Q. Ebbitt - fairy tale, middle school
What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries - regency romance (on sale 6-18)
Sand Castle Bay by Sherryl Woods - romance

plus it would be nice to finish something from last year's list.

Brad Hercules wanted James from the moment he met the huge lion shifter… But he was invisible to the man. Over the months of working for Ant, he heard the stories of James’s conquests and realized if he was ever going to have a shot with the man he needed to change into James’s type. Mainly, tight-bodied little twinks that know how to have fun.

James wrote off Brad for the kind of fun he wants from the sexy little mouse shifter because he’s too innocent and James won’t risk breaking Brad’s heart. When Ramses shows up to take Brad’s old job when he gets promoted, everything changes. He wants Brad so bad he takes a job he’s overqualified for. When Ramses makes his play, James refuses to be left out and moves in on Brad.

But who is the screechy bitch that shows up trying to ruin their lives?

~*~*~
Brad and James were both secondary characters in the previous book and I'm happy they got their own story. Sure throwing in a third gives the story some punch but what really makes it pop is the screechy bitch and the love and support that follows here introduction.

The Pride (lion/James), Mischief (mouse/Brad) and covens (vampire/Ramses) work together to make sure that the three guys have their own happy ever after and that the punishment fits the crime(s).

Ransom Burke, the handsome, wealthy, gay CEO of Burke, Burke, and Hammett, has implemented a strict no-fraternization rule for his firm. And with good reason—his father's profligate ways almost destroyed the family company. Ransom’s new policy works well until he comes into the office one day and sees Parrish Rutledge, his new executive secretary. Ransom finds Parrish extremely attractive but fights his feelings. If he takes Parrish as a lover, he'll have to fire him.

Parrish has been alone since he was sixteen, having been tossed out by his older brother. He dreams of his boss but knows nothing can ever come of it. Then an office party becomes their undoing and they give in to their passion. As expected, Ransom offers Parrish a choice: stay and ignore what happened or leave the job and return to college. Neither option is even remotely appealing. If only Parrish could persuade Ransom there's a third possibility….

~*~*~
I loved the interaction between the main characters and the peaks into office politics, policies and relationships.

When the elders’ plan is revealed, Dor Murray grabs the obviously confused and enormous guy next to him, figuring the guy could use some help getting out of there… And he could use a shield.

Except UPAC screwed up. Surprise, surprise.

They let an elephant into the conference, and of course, that’s who Dor grabbed. Now he’s got a massive, but hot, elephant shifter in musth who’s decided Dor is his.

Wyatt is oblivious to everything but the gorgeous man in his arms that he wants to claim. The guards are freaking out and Dor is begging him to run.

Trying to save Wyatt from UPAC wasn’t the same as agreeing to be his mate. And now Dor has to handle Wyatt’s aggressive, testosterone-filled musth for the first nine days of their mating. Will Dor ever be able to forgive Wyatt for what he’s done when he wasn’t himself?

~*~*~
Once again the Elders made a mistake. This time it was letting an elephant into the meeting. Not that they have anything against elephants but their drugged drink forced said elephant into a week long heat with an unsuspecting man. A much smaller man and the elders were fearful the elephant would kill him and others during his lust-blind week.

Surviving Wyatt's musth (think cat in heat) is a piece of cake for Dor compared to the in-laws. Wyatt's Mother and Sister are a real piece of ...something. There is a happy ending with a hint of a related story with one of Wyatt's friends and Dor's cousin. :-)

Originally from the ancient mythical island of Atlantis, Nicholas has spent the last year deep in the mountains of Maine, serving as Director of Security for the Nova Mare and Inglenook resorts. Fully embracing his life in the twenty-first century, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to a trouble-prone employee, and is determined to keep her safe.

The last thing Julia Campbell needs is a man with a hero complex, especially one as handsome and imposing as Nicholas. All she has to do is keep it together until her younger sister turns eighteen, and then she can focus on her own life. But strange things have been happening at the resort—and it’s Nicholas who keeps coming to her rescue. When Nicholas is suddenly the one in trouble, Julia realizes he’s not quite what he seems—and that she’ll do anything to help the man who’s stolen her heart…
~*~*~
This is book four and there were hints of book five so I've got my fingers crossed! Is it necessary for you to read the first three? No. You'll understand relationships better and some events but you could pick up this book and fall in love with Spellbound Falls.

This is a romance with magic. Not just the true love kind but move mountains and travel through time kind of magic. Our male lead is a warrior from another time, now head of security at Nova Mare Resort. You'd think he'd be bored but there are plenty of time travelers willing to spend the big bucks to stay at the 5-star resort and some of them don't pay attention to modern ideas. Like, your son can't lure a local girl into the woods without consequences ideas. This a a small part of a perfectly lovely story and illustrated to our female lead, and her brother, what he thought of them. (It turned out to be a good thing).

Julia is just trying to make enough money to live a comfortable life, pay for her sisters education, and hopefully save her brothers from following their dad's footsteps of not only being abusive but also the town drunk. Maine women are tough and independent and Julia has eyes that remind Nicholas of a cat.

Most of the book is a about a hunky-could-have-anyone guy and a girl who's been-crushed-so-doesn't-see-she's-wonderful. The miscommunication, stress and worry that can happen at the beginning, just with a little twist such as several character being from the ancient mythical island of Atlantis.

She may be aloof, and more pretty than gorgeous, but Alani Rivers is the kind of woman a hot-blooded mercenary can't forget, no matter how hard he tries. So when Jackson Savor wakes up next to the naked, sleeping beauty—with no memory of what happened—he knows he's been drugged…even if Alani doesn't.

After she was kidnapped, Alani vowed never to trust another man again. Still, something about this strong, sexy hero with the tender touch makes her want to believe him. As Jackson hunts down a mysterious intruder, he swears he'll move heaven and earth to keep Alani safe. But what really happened that night? And will the truth bring them closer than they ever thought possible—or put Alani squarely in harm's way again?
~*~*~
This was edgier than the other two books, seemed a little faster paced and more dangerous. This one had a very satisfying end with the last page of the book giving insight to the possibility of another book. Then I remembered A Perfect Storm.

I didn't want this one to end then I had to finish it. Jackson is such a bad boy/hero. He's also able to see Alani as the strong woman she is rather than the kid sister or kidnap victim the other two see. He's passionate and gentle, able to kill when needed and tame a feral cat with equal ability.

Nestled on the Oregon coast is a small town of rocky beaches and rugged charm. Locals love the land's unspoiled beauty. Developers see it as a potential gold mine. When newcomer Hank Cooper learns he's been left an old friend's entire beachfront property, he finds himself with a community's destiny in his hands.

Cooper has never been a man to settle in one place, and Thunder Point was supposed to be just another quick stop. But Cooper finds himself getting involved with the town. And with Sarah Dupre, a woman as complicated as she is beautiful.

With the whole town watching for his next move, Cooper has to choose between his old life and a place full of new possibilities. A place that just might be home.

~*~*~
I expected to like this book because of past experience with the author. I didn't. I ended up loving it. It took me a little time to get into it but that was mainly because of other reading material and I ending up going 20 to finished overnight!

There are some loveable characters, some I didn't like, several story lines going on at once, and one really creepy high school kid.

I expected the realtor to try more with Cooper and was prepared to really hate her but she backed off. Maybe she'll be a side romance in another book but I hope it's after the other couples get together.

There were a couple of spots I was afraid were going to be cliffhangers but there were resolved enough that I didn't need to throw the book.

Luckily for us, Ms Carr (or her publisher) is not making us wait a whole year before we can read more from Thunder Point. Book 2: The Newcomer is coming late June and book 3: The Hero is coming late August!

Signing up for the Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon

Spring into Horror
Read-a-Thon

hosted by The True Book Addict
at Seasons of Reading
Sign- up here, and watch for the starting line post.

Start Time: Midnight CST on Monday, April 22
End Time: 11:59 p.m. CST on Sunday, April 28

Now don't let the word 'horror' scare you away. You only have to read one scary book during the duration of the read-a-thon. However, that book can be horror, paranormal, thriller, mystery, etc. The rest of the read-a-thon, you can read whatever you want. More horror/scary stuff or just your regular reading repertoire.

As always, this is a week long read-a-thon, but you can join in and read whenever it's convenient for you. It's all about being laid back and getting some reading done...with a little bit of scary thrown in.

We will also have a few scheduled Twitter chats again. I will announce the times in the starting line post. Our Twitter hashtag is #SpringHorrorRAT

You do not have to have a blog. You can sign up using your Goodreads, Twitter, or Facebook accounts.

I'm hoping to do much better than last year.

Ultimate Blog Party 2013 with 5 Minutes for Mom

Ultimate Blog Party 2013

If your not sure what the Ultimate Blog Party is, head over to 5 Minutes For Mom where the party is happening at. There are links to join up with your blog and/or social media. There are a variety of blogs from Mom Blogs with/without product reviews to Opinion blogs and specialty blogs.

If you’re visiting from the UBP, Hi! I’m Gina, stay at home mom of adult children. I enjoy reading (almost anything!), crochet, counted cross stitch, sewing, quilting, and scrapbooking. Most I haven't done as regularly as I'd like. I have a love/hate relationship with housework and laundry and am learning to love the gym. I'm a recently diagnosed Diabetic so time spent working out is even more important.

I've been married for just over 27 years. My husband and I have two children. A girl, 26 and a boy, 23. We're currently owned by two cats, a brother/sister who visited for a week with their Mom and siblings while their family was out of town, and never left. We've had a variety of pets, including the almost required dog and fish but also a rat, bunnies and desert tortoises.

I was active in the schools when my children were attending but spend most of my time reading now. Or farming (FarmVille/Facebook), surfing around on Pinterest or LOLCats. I'm active in our church as is my husband.

My husband is in the transportation field (highway construction), our daughter in the the funeral business (embalmer), our son has yet to decide what he wants to be when he grows up.

I started blogging in 2009 so I could join reading challenges and most of my blog posts will be about books. New ones in the house (Monday), reviews, spotlights and quick thoughts when I finish one. So many bloggers have great reading challenges out there that there's no way I could do them all but I'm trying ;-) Some of my posts may be food, exercise or health related. Or just a pretty picture I took. We take one big vacation each year, alternating extended family reunions, as well as little ones as needed so I'm hoping you'll see lots of pictures when we get home.

Visit me on pinterest (mainly books and running) and twitter (sporadically)

Thanks for stopping by The Lair!

male/male romance, Cowboy/Rodeo
source: private library

Chaz struggles with his addiction, while continuing to do his job of saving bull riders, but it’s all getting out of control.

Charles ‘Chaz’ O’Brien has been at the top of his profession for many years, enduring injuries that would have crushed a lesser man. Yet the top bullfighter isn’t calling it quits any time soon. He does his job with a fierce joy, though all the while he’s hiding a terrible secret. One that could get him suspended, and could end up killing the very men he protects.

Peter Skinner loves working for Les Hardin and Randy Hersch. His bosses are amazing men, but seeing how in love they are every day makes Peter’s heart ache. He wishes he could find a man to love him like that, but he knows they’re hard to come by in Wyoming where he lives.

Until, one day, Peter finds a man strung out in an alley, and is the only one around to deal with it. When Peter and Chaz meet, their worlds collide in a way that could be the best thing in the world for them both, or the worst experience of their lives.

~*~*~
This could be read as a stand alone but is so much better when read as part of a series. There is a lot of back story in the previous books. That being said. It's been awhile and countless number of books ago since I read the others and I did just find.

Peter is a sweet character in a bad spot with his family but he learned that the family you choose can be a whole lot better than the one you're born into. Chaz doesn't have the family problem, his is pain meds. Chaz's life revolves around the rodeo. He's a clown and one of the important parts of the ring for he holds the rider's safety in his ability to distract the bulls. Hard to do when you're hurting, thus the pain medicine.

Does Chaz love the rodeo more then he loves Peter? That becomes the big question and the solution was unexpected.

Book Monsters RaT Wrap-up

The Book Monsters
Read-a-Thon
March 29 - April 5

Hosted  at  The Book Monsters

Wow, this was half over before I found it. I must be slowing down as the year gets older. Can you believe it's April?!

Anyways, I started the RaT with the goal of doing one of four things (see below). How'd I do? grrrr.

I started off by finishing the online serial I was reading. It didn't count for this. Then I started re-reading another one. That one doesn't count either! I did some real world stuff to do before I could sit down with a book. Also, I kept falling asleep. . . I hate being sick.

I'd like to say I finished one of my goal books but I didn't even open any of them! I did read one book that wasn't on the list...I've got to start having a vague goal so those count... and they're all still waiting by my reading chair.

sigh

Goal
do one of the following
finish Savor the Danger by Lori Foster (on page 179)
read/review Sand Castle Bay by Sherryl Wood
read/review What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries
read something off my "stacked by my reading chair" list

That looks good. I'd love to get four this week but I'll be happy to cross one off my list.
