Tuesday Intros (1st Paragraph)

Every Tuesday, she'll be posting the opening paragraph (maybe two) of her current read. Why don't you join us?
As much as Heather Sloan loved a bright New England winter day, chasing a puppy through knee-deep snow in seventeen degrees wasn't her idea of fun. Rohan--the runaway puppy, a twelve-week-old golden retriever--wasn't quickly tiring of his romp or sticking to the plowed driveway and shoveled walks, either. Not a chance. She spotted his tracks, leading through the woods straight for quiet, frozen Echo Lake.

She wasn't following a rabbit or deer by mistake. They definitely were puppy tracks. She paused, noting that the trail veered to the right, parallel to the lake. Something must have caught Rohan's attention. A bird, a breeze, a noise.

Great.

Heather followed the tracks through a deeper drift, but they disappeared under the low-hanging, snow-laden branches of two gnarly hemlocks. Rohan could easily fit under them. She couldn't. The trees grew so close together that trying to squeeze between them meant getting snow down her back. Going around them would risk a delay in finding the tracks again.

Before I Fall by Jessica Scott
Falling-book 1, March 2015, ebook

Stay focused. Get a job. Save her father's life.

Beth Lamont knows far too much about the harsh realities of life her gilded classmates have only read about in class. She'll do whatever it takes to take care of her father, even if that means tutoring a guy like Noah - a guy who represents everything she hates about the war, soldiers and what the Army has done to her family.

Noah Warren doesn't know how to be a student. All he knows is war. But he's going to college now to fulfill a promise and he doesn't break his promises. Except he doesn't count on his tutor being drop dead gorgeous and distracting as hell. One look at Beth threatens to unravel the careful lies Noah has constructed around him.

A simple arrangement turns into something neither of them can deny. And a war that neither of them can forget could destroy them both.

But the edition she finds at the bookstore is no Penguin Classics Chatterley-it's an ancient hardcover with notes in the margins between two besotted lovers of long ago. What Maggie finds in her search for the lovers and their fate, and what she learns about herself in the process, will surprise and move readers.

Utopia, Iowa by Brian Yansky
young adult, 2015, hardcover

Jack Bell has an unusual gift—or curse, depending on your point of view. And he’s not the only one. In Utopia, Iowa, anything can happen.

For the most part, aspiring screenwriter Jack Bell is just your typical Midwestern kid. He’s got a crush on his hot best friend, Ash. He’s coping with a sudden frostiness between his once crazy-in-love parents. He’s debating where to go to college next year—or whether to go at all. But then there’s his gift (or curse): Jack can see dead people, just like the kid in The Sixth Sense. Lately, the ghosts are more distracting than usual, demanding that Jack get to the bottom of their mysterious deaths—all while avoiding the straitlaced Detective Bloodsmith, who doesn’t believe in gifts or curses and can’t help wondering why Jack keeps turning up at crime scenes. Is there a happily-ever-after in Jack’s future, or is that only the stuff of movies?

Just a Boy by Rob Clinger
young adult, 2007, trade paperback

High school wrestler Jove Tyler might look like an average guy but he's "different." Instead of falling for Beth Stein, his caring and compassionate "girlfriend" at Templeton High, Jove develops a secret crush on his cute classmate Jason Carnivelli, who lives next door--and is happy to stay in the closet. Just A Boy looks back at a time just short of manhood, filled with first kisses, last chances, and the same question every day: Who will accept me for who I am?

Wolf Town Mates by Joely Skye
erotic shifter m/m romance, 2012, trade paperback

Three stories starting with Wolf Town.
After years of hiding from other mind controllers, loneliness drives Scott to break his own rule and allow himself to fall asleep in a stranger’s arms. Geography Club by Brent Hartinger
Russel Middlebrook Series, 2003, small hardcover

Russel Middlebrook is convinced he's the only gay kid at Goodkind High School. Then his online gay-chat buddy turns out to be none other than Kevin, the popular but closeted star of the school's baseball team. Soon Russel meets other gay students too. There's his best friend, Min, who reveals that she's bisexual, and her soccer-playing girlfriend, Terese. And there's Terese's politically active friend, Ike.

But how can kids this diverse get together without drawing attention to themselves?

"We just choose a club that's so boring, nobody in their right mind would ever in a million years join it. We could call it Geography Club!"

American Sniper by Chris Kyle with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice
autobiography, 2013, mass market paperback

The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. His fellow American warriors, whom he protected with deadly precision from rooftops and stealth positions during the Iraq War, called him “The Legend”; meanwhile, the enemy feared him so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle, who was tragically killed in 2013, writes honestly about the pain of war—including the deaths of two close SEAL teammates—and in moving first-person passages throughout, his wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their family, as well as on Chris. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.
Now a blockbuster motion picture directed by Clint Eastwood-nominated for SIX Academy awards, including Best Picture

Thoughts On . . . Kitty's Christmas Hope by Sharon Kleve

Kitty's Christmas Hope
by Sharon Kleve

series: Dreams Come True
publisher: Books to Go Now
publish date: March 2014
ASIN: B00J4YMOPW
28 pages

Author's blog | Twitter | Facebook

Grade: C

Book Blurb:
Kitty Skinner meets the perfect guy, he's kind, considerate and sexy as hell. She hopes to spend her favorite holiday with him, Christmas Eve. The only problem is, Aaron treats her like his best friend, not the girlfriend she dreams of being. To make matters worse he’s found his perfect girl and wants Kitty to help plan their first date.

Aaron Tyler thinks Kitty is sweet, talented and someone he can settle down with, but believes he has to deceive her into believing he cares for someone else to win her heart.

Nothing goes as planned when one mishap after another prevents them from admitting their true feelings.

My Thoughts:
I've had the book awhile and didn't reread the blurb before starting it. Now I'm thinking poor Kitty!, she's fantasizing about the guy she's at the football game with and he thinks they need to talk after the game. Dang, she was told Aaron never dated a girl more than once but I'm thinking this isn't much of a date!

off to read . . .

This could have gone very badly! The deception could have had Kitty holding true to her phone call . . . "Her words sounded final, as though she never wanted to see him again" but fiction often demands a happy-ever-after.

There are a couple of questions but I believe one could be answered reading the previous books in the series and the other if the book itself was longer.

This could have been a quick and fun read but I had formatting problems with my review copy. The book itself was a sweet read and I'm thinking the two friends need books of their own.

off to check to see if they do!

Book Blurb
Member of the Black Hills Pack in Los Lobos, South Dakota, Jace Matthews is sent to check out the new owner of a piece of land adjoining his packs. Once he steps into her small bookstore in Collins, he’s taken by surprise by the small, prim woman behind the counter. At once, he recognizes his mate. While the wolf inside urges him to complete the bond, Jace knows he must take his time with his human mate. But when danger arises, threatening Michelle’s life, Jace is done waiting. It’s time to claim his mate.

After she inherits her aunt’s property, Michelle Sanders moves to Collins, South Dakota, to escape the monotony of her routine life. Unfortunately, the only person she manages to befriend is not only the hottest guy on the planet, but also gay. However, she never expects a favor for her sexy new friend to result in a series of weird events that will change her life forever.

My Thoughts
This is book 5. Usually I feel like I missed something and it distracts from the story. I didn't get that with this one. I do want to read more about the wolves but don't have the frustration of not knowing the whole story. That being said, I could tell that there was more to be said and will continue with the series.

Romance type stories usually have a happy ever after so we know Jace and Michelle get together. What we don't expect are the dangers and stumbles along the way that add up to a nice story. I really liked Michelle. She felt sassy as well as brave to me. Not too sure about Kate but she is Jace's sister and the situation did stink so maybe her behavior is excused somewhat.

What to say about Jace. Well, he's a male shifter and they're always written extra spicy but he's a little clueless when we first meet him and I loved that. He's also protective and ruthless when he needs to be.

The sexual tension was there from the beginning. From Jace's side, Michelle is his mate but also human so he's trying to be careful but I could hear his wolf growling in the background. From Michelle's side, she's found her dream man and "The fact he was gay hadn’t affected her late night fantasies one iota." and then later . . .
"there was a man in her shower. A naked man. With the sexiest ass she’d ever seen. Said naked man slowly turned, letting the water sluice over his muscular, tanned frame. Unable to glance away, she ate up every second of the display."
Whew!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
