I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Thoughts On . . . Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave

About the book:
There are secrets you share, and secrets you hide…

Growing up on her family’s Sonoma vineyard, Georgia Ford learned some important secrets. The secret number of grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine: eight hundred. The secret ingredient in her mother’s lasagna: chocolate. The secret behind ending a fight: hold hands.

But just a week before her wedding, thirty-year-old Georgia discovers her beloved fiancé has been keeping a secret so explosive, it will change their lives forever.

Georgia does what she’s always done: she returns to the family vineyard, expecting the comfort of her long-married parents, and her brothers, and everything familiar. But it turns out her fiancé is not the only one who’s been keeping secrets…

My Thoughts:
The book starts with a very lovely story about how her parents met then tells us about Georgia's car ride.

With only the clothes on my back and a hastily packed suitcase, I drove from sunny Southern California--the place that had been my home for the last fourteen years--to the small town in Northern California on the edge of the Russian River Valley. The place that'd been my home for my entire life until then.

Nine hours, five rest-spot stops, two terrible milkshakey coffee drinks (one vanilla, one strawberry), and a roll of Rolos later, I arrived in Sonoma County. I should have felt relief, but as I passed the familiar sign for Sebastopol--its wiry hills visible behind it--I caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview. My hair was falling out of its bun, my eyes were deeply unsettled, and I couldn't escape the feeling that I was about to walk into a new kind of hell.

So I turned around and started driving the nine hours back to Los Angeles.

Interesting. I'm sure the problem that sent her running is still in Los Angeles and since she's tired and hungry, she stays and heads to her brother Finn's tavern. Things are a little different than she expected but the part I liked . . .

Finn turned back for just a second. "Hey, Georgia . . ." he said.

"Yeah?"

"You know that you're still wearing your wedding dress, yes?" he said.

and I'm hooked! Back to reading . . .

As the saying goes, you can't go home again, so too it is with Georgia and while I'm loving the book and the twists, the real world has intruded into my reading time so I need to leave this unfinished.

About the book:
Jennifer Sharpe is a single mom of two struggling to balance her work and home life. Jennifer is finally able to devote herself fully to every aspect of her life, but why does Jennifer feel more busy than ever?

My Thoughts:
How could you not like this book. I've wanted to be in two places at once a bunch of times!

Real life interfered with getting the review done early so I brought the book on vacation. I'm sad to say I'm not loving it.

Maybe I'm not the target audience? I can't get passed the "whiny" single mother part. Your ex doesn't pay child support but looks like he's had botox? The boss that promised you time off for recitals is gone and the new boss wants you to work more hours? You're having trouble making ends meet? There is a solution for all of it. Change jobs, move if you have to, go to court. Maybe I've been out of the job market too long and it isn't that simple anymore but come on. Kids first. If you work extra to pay for extra stuff for your kids then can't enjoy the outcome, cut back on the extras.

I'm sad because I like the idea so much that I thought I'd love the book. I'm going to try again when I get home from vacation. Maybe it will make a difference if I'm in my own chair with the distractions I'm use to.

Book Blurb
Member of the Black Hills Pack in Los Lobos, South Dakota, Jace Matthews is sent to check out the new owner of a piece of land adjoining his packs. Once he steps into her small bookstore in Collins, he’s taken by surprise by the small, prim woman behind the counter. At once, he recognizes his mate. While the wolf inside urges him to complete the bond, Jace knows he must take his time with his human mate. But when danger arises, threatening Michelle’s life, Jace is done waiting. It’s time to claim his mate.

After she inherits her aunt’s property, Michelle Sanders moves to Collins, South Dakota, to escape the monotony of her routine life. Unfortunately, the only person she manages to befriend is not only the hottest guy on the planet, but also gay. However, she never expects a favor for her sexy new friend to result in a series of weird events that will change her life forever.

My Thoughts
This is book 5. Usually I feel like I missed something and it distracts from the story. I didn't get that with this one. I do want to read more about the wolves but don't have the frustration of not knowing the whole story. That being said, I could tell that there was more to be said and will continue with the series.

Romance type stories usually have a happy ever after so we know Jace and Michelle get together. What we don't expect are the dangers and stumbles along the way that add up to a nice story. I really liked Michelle. She felt sassy as well as brave to me. Not too sure about Kate but she is Jace's sister and the situation did stink so maybe her behavior is excused somewhat.

What to say about Jace. Well, he's a male shifter and they're always written extra spicy but he's a little clueless when we first meet him and I loved that. He's also protective and ruthless when he needs to be.

The sexual tension was there from the beginning. From Jace's side, Michelle is his mate but also human so he's trying to be careful but I could hear his wolf growling in the background. From Michelle's side, she's found her dream man and "The fact he was gay hadn’t affected her late night fantasies one iota." and then later . . .
"there was a man in her shower. A naked man. With the sexiest ass she’d ever seen. Said naked man slowly turned, letting the water sluice over his muscular, tanned frame. Unable to glance away, she ate up every second of the display."
Whew!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Thoughts on...The Priest and the Peaches

I really wish I had something profound to say. I'm getting an "A" in Procrastination 101 and when I finally got into the book, real life interfered and I haven't finished. That said...

I don't usually read reviews of books I'm reviewing but I wanted to find out why I was having such a hard time with it. I finally decided it's a mix of several things. The attitude of men in the 60's, format, my mood, and new books all conspired together the help me with my "A".

Grrr, taking care of the house and children is not "women's work" and just because they are a woman, doesn't mean that they are the right woman. I'd really like to knock some sense into the father and the oldest child.

Don't even get me started on the nosy neighbor. She should be fired at the very minimum but I'd really like to string her up.

I'll be away from my computer for most of the day but plan on finishing the book and posting an update.

Don't forget to check out the other reviews, tour schedule

Thoughts on...A Place to Die by Dorothy James

Just a quick note....I'm on vacation, and away from internet access, the week before this is due....if you can read this sentence, I goofed up! Don't you love the cover? My copy is very glossy and the colors pop.

I'm such a mood reader that my feelings toward the book and ultimately my review, are greatly affected by my mood. On the other hand, a good book can turn around a sour mood. It remains to be seen what happens next.....

This was not a good vacation book for me, I was easily distracted with games and talk so my first intro to the book was horrible!

I don't think I like Eleanor and I know I don't like Franz. I'm liking Georg so while the book starts with Eleanor as the "main character" it is a George Buchner book and I have high hopes.

off to read some more......

This does not read like a first in the series. Not to say that I feel I'm missing something but rather the characters are well developed and "fleshed out" as if they've been around a while. I still don't think I like Eleanor but I like her a little more now than earlier. Still don't like Franz. There have been a couple of twists and I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Unfortunately, I will not be finished before the review is posted. (darn that real life-I'll update the review). When I first started reading I was a little miffed at all the descriptions but as I'm farther along, realized they were very necessary to show the differences between all the have-a-lots.

Each chapter has a bit of an introduction and is broken up into sections. I like the sections but sometimes reading the into throws me out of my head space. So far the book is a definite C and I know just the friend to hand it off too. I will add this author to my "read these" list but she may not be the first one reached for.

liking this, off to read some more......

Some residents and staff have surprising connections to the dead man, but who would have wanted to kill him? Thoughts on...Time Slice by Kerry Downing

This will be a partial review. While I may have the book read by the deadline, I'm away from the internet and can't update but will do so as soon as I can. ;)

First, I really, really don't like the daughter. So daddy wasn't around when you were little, boo hoo....he's here now and is trying but you have such a chip on your shoulder, you resent the time he spends with his grandchild. Your daughter! Good heavens woman, grow up!

Okay. Now that that's off my chest ;) I hope she does.

Where I'm at has too much technical jargon but I don't see Roy accepting anything less so I'm struggling through it.

Emily's doctor has asked her to start a diary and I'm loving her entries. Great way to get inside a character's head.

Looking forward to finishing the book.....wishing I had planned better.

I still don't like Ann (daughter) but I love her husband and their daughter.

....off to read some more!

Finished.

Satisfied.

Once Roy doesn't need to explain, the technical jargon goes away and the story become fast-paced and slightly dangerous. Still not sure I like Ann. Loved Emily.

The Traveler solicits Roy's help in recovering an object invented by his murdered father and beyond his own reach. Roy is his last hope.

At first it seems that the Traveler's wish might be easily granted. He also discovers the very real physical and mental risks involved in roaming the Time Stream.

Thoughts on...Nitt Witt Hill by Sebastian Gibson

Read this book twice.

Once because it's funny as all get out and a second time because there is a grain of truth in each chapter. I had to double check that this is really a novel! This is politics taken to the absurd level and told from a comedians point to view.

You'll laugh at Joe Homeland, he "operates a modest security firm", and his alert about what is really interfering with aircraft navigation and communications equipment. Then you'll cringe when the warning is taken seriously enough for there to be Senate Hearings on the subject.

I'd really love to tell you all the funny jokes and bad puns but I just can't, read this excerpt and you'll see why. There are 54 chapters in this novel and most are around five pages. Just enough to get you to laugh...then hopefully you'll think about it. I don't know if that was the author's intention but this is a timely novel to be reading leading up to elections in the United States.

I'm only at chapter 32 as I write this because I'm having a hard time reading it straight through. I'll read several chapters, think a bit before escaping into real-life or a different book, then come back.

.....off to read some more!

Currently at chapter 48 and I really wish there wasn't so much truth in this novel. Non-Americans are going to think Americans are idiots. Maybe we are.

.....off to read some more!

LOVE how this ends!

Nitt Witt Hill
by Sebastian Gibson

publisher: Sebastian Gibson Publishing
release date: February 2012
ISBN: 978-0984777624
format: Trade paperback
political humor
248 pages

Grade: B

as for age...I'd say 14+, use your own judgement, this is a political book but I say if they're interested, let them read it.

Product Description:
What's causing the country and now the President to lose their crackers and voters to elect Nitt Witts? Clowns and Turkeys are running Congress and the Nitt Witts are everywhere. But will one more Clown in Congress make any difference? Would the country be better off with some real Turkeys instead of those Clowns? Or are the Nitt Witts destined to run Washington? Set on historic Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria, California and Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., Sebastian Gibson's satire paints the absurdities of the political world and of daily life with his unique sense of humor. The top political parties have degenerated into the Nitt Witts, the Turkeys and the Clown Party and the country is becoming deranged. Unless Mark Twain (Mark, a political consultant and his dog, Twain) can determine what's making people so neurotic and make sense of the madness, riots may cause the country's collapse. The Clowns are running for office with the slogan, "One more Clown in Congress probably won't make any difference." The Turkey candidates are running against the Clowns with their counter slogan, "Isn't it time we had some real Turkeys in office instead of those Clowns?" But it's the Nitt Witt Party who may have the most appeal to voters with their slogan, "Elect a Nitt Witt and see what some real Nitt Witts can do in Washington." Meanwhile, believing a lightweight metal alloy in bras when placed in contact with the wearer's skin is causing electrostatic interference with aircraft navigation equipment and with people themselves, Homeland Security and the Senate take action to prohibit the wearing of bras on airplanes and their sale in America. Still, the situation fails to improve and the country is on the verge of losing its collective mind. With the rhetoric of political parties at a level never seen before ("Turkeys are made for stuffing, Clowns are for Congress") and as protesters riot over the right to wear or go without bras and try to take control of the White House it's up to Mark and his dog Twain to determine the cause of the country's mental imbalance and find a way to save the country. Read the novel that's making Washington laugh so hard, Congress can't accomplish anything. It all begins and ends on Nitt Witt Hill.

Giveaway & Thoughts on...Lifting the Wheel of Karma by Paul H. Magid ~spoiler alert~

One key piece of information was left off the back description and I don't know if it's supposed to be some big surprise or not. That's why the ~spoiler alert~!

I started reading in the car but had to stop due to tears ruining my make-up!

This book is so much more than I though it would be. A boy, dealing with nightmares, traveling to India for help. What I found was a boy, a loving family, vicious nightmares and a tragic accident. That accident is the spoiler for you as Joseph does travel to India but he does it in a wheelchair.

Lifting the Wheel of Karma is not the usual type of book I read. It's one of the things I love about reviewing, the chance to go outside my comfort zone. I expected a quick read, easily read, easily forgotten when I moved on. What I'm finding is that I'm not ready to read the next book. I want to process what I've read first. I feel desire for the same peace Joseph was searching for. I wonder if it is possible to combine the Eastern philosophy he uses with my own Christian beliefs.

There is strength in this book but I also wondered if it could have been shorter. As I was reading, I thought it was too flowery but Paul paints with words and I don't know how he could have left a "color" out of his painting.

I do not know if I could have done as Billy and his parents had done. Joseph's parents kissed him good-bye, not knowing when they'd see him again. Billy dropped him off with a stranger, in a country far away, and walked away not knowing if he'd ever see his beloved brother again.

So, the book is fiction but it reads like truth and there are lessons to be learned. Will you see them? Will you see different ones than I did?

The author's website has pictures of India and Montana as well as the same discussion questions that are in the book.

Moonstone by Marilee Brothers

Other Shelf Tours book stop. I'm also going to post this in January because I believe a lot of bloggers are on a holiday break.

Moonstone
The Unbidden Magic Series, book 1
Marilee Brothers

Publisher: Bell Bridge Books
Release Date: August 2008
format: trade paperback
pages: 225
Young Adult/Urban Fantasy
Ages 14 and Up

from the publisher
The girl voted least likely to save the world may have to do just that.

A sickly mom. A crappy travel trailer. High school bullies and snarky drama queens. Bad-guys with charming smiles. Allie has problems. And then there's that whole thing about fulfilling a magical prophecy and saving the world from evil.

Welcome to the funny, sad, sometimes-scary world of fifteen-year-old Allie Emerson, who's struggling to keep her act together (not to mention her mom's) in the small-town world of Peacock Flats, Washington. A zap from an electrical fence sets off Allie's weird psychic powers. The next thing she knows she's being visited by a hippy-dippy guardian angel, and then her mysterious neighbor, the town "witch," gives her an incredible moonstone pendant that has powers only a "Star Seeker" is meant to command. "Who, me?" is Allie's first reaction. But as sinister events begin to unfold, Allie realizes she's got a destiny far bigger than she ever imagined,

If she can just survive everyday life, in the meantime.

My thoughts
I am not a young adult but I loved this story. Granted it took a while to get into it but I had other things going on. I was soon up all night to finish it.

Allie tells a great, believable story. I know there's magic but the whole thing reads like real life with a twist. I wanted to know what was next. Is the good guy not? Is the bad guy really bad? Who's your friend? You can you trust? And what with the wind chimes?

I was unsatisfied at the ending but only because it did. I am so glad it is book one, and am looking forward to reading more about Allie and her friends.

My Rating: 3 but I'll be looking for the rest of the series.
