I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Thoughts On . . . Awakened by the Wolf

Awakened by the Wolf
by Kristal Hollis

Published by: Harlequin Nocturne
Published: Jun 2016
ISBN # 978-0373009718
304 pages
genre: Paranormal Romance

author's website | Facebook | Twitter |

Back of Book:
Who's been sleeping in the Alpha's bed?

Exiled from his pack by his father, Brice Walker has secretly come home to visit his ailing grandmother only to discover a human and very desirable female sleeping in his bed. Their attraction is instant. But his new bed buddy seems determined to resist his Southern charm and Alpha allure.

For Brice, fiercely independent Cassie not only represents a chance to build a new life in Walker's Run but is also his one true mate. Cassie's reluctance dissolves when a rogue shifter kidnaps her, and now she and Brice must work together to save his pack. But once she witnesses the savagery of wolfan justice, can Cassie accept Brice as man, beast and her true love?

My Thoughts:
Oh, wow. I'm only at 45% but the drama and sexual tension has been through the roof. There is an authoritative father, a scheming uncle, and two women. One he calls Sunshine who is from the wrong side of the tracks but smells like sunshine after a terrible storm and another he never wants to see again after the last stunt she pulled. Too bad she's in town and reserved the Honeymoon suite for them. And to top it all off, Granny died at the beginning of the book but we haven't gone to her funeral yet.

First kisses are fantastic
He tasted like a storybook Christmas, sparkly, exciting and overwhelmingly wonderful.

You expect danger when the kidnapping is mentioned on the back cover. You even expect some when you meet Victoria (the second woman) but other danger shows up that had me holding my breath. And Victoria proves the saying that beauty is skin deep.

Usually I can stop and write some then read some more but this time there were only the three breaks. I just got sucked into the story. I should mention that the sexual tension gets hotter before exploding.

I love that while paranormal stories don't all follow the same rules, they generally agree that if something smells rotten, it is rotten.

This includes everything associated with spring and summer such as weddings, swimming pools, the ocean, beaches, lounge chairs, flowers, sunglasses, palm trees, vacations, the sun, a garden, rain, thunderstorms, heat and so on.

Try for strictly science fiction but since fantasy is so closely related, if you're more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine.

You do not have to have a blog to participate...feel free to link up and check in from Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, etc. These days, it seems most of our activity goes on in our Facebook group which I love. The interaction in our group is fabulous!
Not sure about prizes.

Okay, that's all from Michelle. I've got a book on request from the library that fits this perfectly so I'm crossing my fingers it gets here in time. I've also go The Martian on my shelves. I know I have books that fit to re-read but I'm not sure how many I have that a new reads without going into fantasy. I think it's time to check the free bestseller list at amazon ;-)

Thoughts On . . . The Prince Who Was Just Himself

The Prince Who Was Just Himself
by Silke Schnee

Publisher: The Plough Publishing House

ISBN: 9780874866827
Release Date: September 2015
Genre: Children's Picture book
32 Pages

format available: hardcover

I didn't find social media for the author

Book Blurb
The royal couple is looking forward to their third child. “He looks a little different,” muses the king at Prince Noah’s arrival. “He is not like the others,” agrees the queen. Soon they notice what a very special person he is, even though he can’t do everything his brothers can.

When the youngest prince disarms the cruel knight Scarface, the nation’s most dreaded enemy, with an act of compassion, everyone finally realizes how good it is that each person is unique.

My Thoughts
First I need to say that this is not a beginner reader's picture book. The words are on every other page like you'd expect with a picture book but this book has a more words per page, covering one-quarter of each two page spread. Two pictures cover the other three-quarters. This I like very much. I also like the illustrations.

The story doesn't come right out and say something like "this child has Down syndrome" or anything like that. The Queen and the King both mention that he looks different but the siblings accept him right away. The town people are horrid but Prince Noah is just happy to be out in the sun.

Like all good picture books, something bad almost happens but Prince Noah saves the day and all the town people love him. Prince Noah doesn't really care, he's just happy to be out in the sun.

Moral of the story? Be accepting, we are all different from each other as well as being the same. And then there's enjoy the journey for it is good to be out in the sun ;-)

I'm sad that I don't have a little one to read this too!

There is a follow up book where Prince Noah heads to school and deals with pirates. I've added the book to my shopping cart ;-)

I know I found a reading challenge that was about picking an author with more than 45 books published then reading everything they've written. I commented on the challenge but didn't bookmark it and now I can' find it. (insert foot stomp here) ;-)

I hope to find the official challenge soon.

It's taken me a while to decide on an author and I may yet do another one: Elizabeth Lowell, JAK, Julia Quinn, Jo Beverley, Stephanie Laurens, Dick Francis, Anne McCaffrey, Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon. Okay, I think that was everybody. I just need to see if all of them have the minimum titles and read the ones I haven't read yet. For Sherrilyn that will be a LOT but not for Dick Francis.

For now . . . . I've picked: Jude Deveraux
any format counts
books read before the challenge count for this challenge
Challenge crossovers acceptable.

There is a list of 58 books on the author's website as well as a list of books by series. Although her list is missing two Nantucket Brides books, my list is not. I know about them because they are on my (unread) ARC pile :-(
I need to add one more to the total (59!) because I bought Change of Heart and it wasn't on her list.

Thoughts On . . . Cisco's Boy

Cisco's Boy
by A. C. Katt

Indiscreet, book 3
Published By: MLR Press, LLC
Published: Nov 2013
ISBN # 9781106038982
approx 220 pages
genre: romance-male/male, very sexy, HEA

author's website | Facebook

Book Description:
Master Cisco de Loria wants everything from his new sub Greg Harris, that is everything but love, in fact his contract expressly forbids it.

Dr. Greg Harris finally has the money to buy a submissive membership at Indiscreet, a gay BDSM club. The only thing he wants is to have Dr. Cisco de Loria as his Master. Cisco wants Greg too, but the one thing Greg most wants to give, Cisco refuses to take, Greg's love. Cisco is so sure he doesn't need love that he puts it in as a clause in their contract. If Greg ever mentions love, the contract is terminated. Cisco finds out the hard way that things somehow don't always work out the way you plan.

My Thoughts
(written as I read, crossing fingers there are no spoilers)

I first met Cisco and Greg while reading The Sunset Club series and was delighted to read that four of the characters had their own stories in the Indiscreet series.

I'm totally okay with BDSM stories but I think I've been spoiled by my own research and other writers. This D/s relationship, so far, doesn't feel correct. Several things come up during their first day that should have come during contract negotiations. Things an experienced Dom would have known about - at the very least, the club owner moderating the negotiations should have brought them up.

I love the characters themselves from the other series and their interactions with each other - I have high hopes for this book. Wish me luck!

grr . . .  Barebacking? Really? Is it still the first day? It wasn't even discussed! I'm really not sure about this series. If I didn't know about this couple from the other series that they show up in, I'd be trying to return this book.

back to reading, keeping my fingers crossed.

Getting better but the brand new sub and not quite a Dom qualities are showing through. It appears that Cisco doesn't really want a sub because he's a Dom, he wants a 24/7 (except work) maid/cook/boy-friend that he doesn't have to love. Oh, and total control of all the money. I'm hoping he gets his head out of his ass soon, I'm half way through the book.

Yes, yes, I know that even with a lot of mainstream couples, one partner has more control over the money than the other. My problem is that Cisco doesn't take the time to share with his sub how much money they have so when he buys a new Audi, on day two, the sub only has his own paycheck for reference and he's giving 75% of it to the Dom! How the hell is he (the sub) supposed to afford keep a new car in six months when the contract is up?

sigh, back to reading

Damn, communication is so important. Also add here a wow, that's a LOT of drama for only five days.

back to the book

Oh I was expecting the trouble (you'll be able to spot it too) but, wow, that was over the top! At least Greg gets his happy ever after. And they finally learn to communicate. Not really a spoiler

Final words: This was book 3 of the series but the first I've read. So, will I continue? Yes, I'll get the books that have Brian and Jim in them. Maybe the rest if they stay on sale.

one last edit: I've since read book 6 in the series and the writing/relationship issures flows much better.

RC Pervy Girl

Pervy Girl
Reading Challenge
2016

hosted by herding cats and burning soup

for more information or to sign up, click here

Find out just how naughty are you--when it comes to books, of course! This challenge is all about the naughty and exploring the gloriously kinky world of romance. There's a "pervy" checklist and the goal is to work your way through as many as possible during the year.

Must review, even if it is short!

Set your pervy girl goal then get to reading! Once you've read it...review it then link it up in the review linky. Reviews don't have to be long. Even a sentence or two is awesome.

What Counts
  • Books MUST be read in 2016
  • All book formats count!
  • Re-reads and Challenge cross overs count!
  • Books can count for only ONE checklist item each

Anyone can join! If you don't have a blog you can use a dedicated shelf on Goodreads or similar.

There's a FB group for the challenge--join to get book suggestions, socialize and get event news!

The Facebook group is a closed group.
There are six levels to choose from, from 6 books to 50+!
There are more than 80 items on the checklist but if you don't find yours, submit it!
Try for novellas or longer (books over 70 pages) but short stories work too.

Need to ask: Books don't have to be only about the checklist item, just the one scene?

I'm going to start easy with with level 1: Sweet and Innocent and will read AND review six books. I'll pick the books first then find where it fit on the pervy checklist. I'm sure the last sixteen books I read will fit the list but I've got to review them too!

Reflection - #atozchallenge

Blogging from A to Z
April Challenge
2016

hosted here

Well, for being unprepared, I didn't do too badly. Several of my posts were late in the day and one was the next day but I got something for all the letters! There was no theme although Disneyland showed up frequently - gotta post about what you're doing!

I didn't visit as much as last year and for that I'm sorry and very happy the list will be up so I can drop in this summer.

I have no criticisms for the way the challenge is run and no ideas how it can be better. I only know that next year I can be better about visits - for that is half the fun!

I'll leave the letter links up top for the summer so you'll be able to find letters easier. I think I should also put up a post with the actual "H is for - Hollywood" so you can find what you're interested in.

Summer is my downtime and I'm starting early by adding May - see you in September!

Monday Mailbox - April edition

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week.

Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.  ;-)

Don't forget to link up your list

~ The newest review book in my house ~

Pumpkinflowers by Matti Friedman
Military Memoirs, 2016, hardcover

It was just one small hilltop in a small, unnamed war in the late 1990s, but it would send out ripples that are still felt worldwide today. The hill, in Lebanon, was called the Pumpkin; flowers was the military code word for “casualties.” Award-winning writer Matti Friedman re-creates the harrowing experience of a band of young Israeli soldiers charged with holding this remote outpost, a task that would change them forever, wound the country in ways large and small, and foreshadow the unwinnable conflicts the United States would soon confront in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere.

I Have a Voice by Tyler Williams
non-fiction, 2016, trade paperback

Tyler Williams has known success. He has performed in Atlanta's famed Fox Theatre, raced down Victory Lane as a NASCAR driver, worked on hit film and TV shows, and sang for thousands in packed arenas. But Tyler has also known failure, devastating setbacks, and the pain of lost love. He knows how it feels to be lost, disconnected from himself and his passion.

Tyler tells his story of losing his "voice," navigating life for many years without it, then finding it again—and finding himself in the process. "I Have a Voice" is full of life lessons that people both young and old will recognize. This is a book of hope, challenges and breakthrough moments. Tyler recounts his personal journey and uses his experience to help guide readers back to their own voices without dictating the steps to get there. Those who have lost their purpose, passion and "voice" will find renewal in his words.

~ The newest books in my house ~

Kitten for a Day by Ezra Jack Keats
picture book, 2002 edition, paperback

Can a puppy be a kitten? This puppy thinks he is. As he plays with four kittens, he tumbles and stumbles, thumps and slurps, spills and falls. Then his mother arrives. Will the five new friends be able to play again?

Flight into Danger by E. K. Barber (Facebook)
Romantic Suspense, 2004, trade paperback

Captain Skyler Madison is a seasoned airline pilot. Alexander Springfield is a wealthy investor. Both are highly successful professionals - both have a secret. They spend a part of their lives in the shadows as highly trained Special Agents for the intelligence gathering division of the Justice Department. Skye heads a team sent to stop the flow of high grade cocaine being distributed among London's elite. When evidence indicates she might have turned, Alex is sent in to covertly uncover the truth. It becomes apparent someone wants her off the case - someone wants her dead. Alex is determined to cover her back even after she discovers his deception and sparks fly. What starts out as a test of skill sizzles into a romance as Alex melts the steel and ice early trauma has placed around Skye's heart. All the friction only makes her eventual surrender hotter, sweeter, and incredibly more satisfying. Their passion wins out as they come together both personally and professionally to resolve a case involving drug deals, murder, betrayal, and near tragedy.

Best of My Love by Susan Mallery
Fool's Gold, 2016, mass market paperback

To overcome her painful past, baker Shelby Gilmore goes on the hunt for a friend-a male friend-to convince her stubborn psyche that men can be trusted. But where in a town as small as fool's Gold will the petite blone find a guy willing to not date her?

Dark, charming Aidan Mitchell puts hte "adventure" in Mitchell Adventure Tours...and into the beds of his many willing female tourists. Until he realizes he's inadvertently become that guy-the one-night Casanove-and worse, everyone in town knows it. Maybe Shelby's boy/girl experiment will help him see women as more than just conquests so he can change his ways and win back his self-respect.

As Aidan and Shelby explore the secret lives of men and women, the heat between them fires up the Fool's God rumor mill. If no one will believe they're just friends, maybe they should give the gossips something to really talk about!
