I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Hosting - Banned/Challenged Books Read-a-Thon

Banned/Challenged Books
Read-a-Thon
September 24-30, 2017

Sign up to read at least one banned or challenged book and link up a review. Reviews can be posted on your blog, GoodReads, or LibraryThing. Reviews can also be of books you've read previously.

Check out all the information available at The American Library Association (ala.org).

Per ala.org:
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.
Banned Books Week would also be a good time to check out your local library and find out what they're doing to insure your freedom to read.

I will read at least one banned/challenged book during the read-a-thon:

Thoughts On . . . Gertrude and Toby Meet the Wolf

Gertrude and Toby Meet the Wolf

Blurb:
Gertrude the Goat and Toby the Tortoise are going fishing at Trout Lake today for their Friday adventure. On their way to the lake, Gertrude and Toby meet a new friend, but unfortunately he is carried off by a hungry wolf! They follow the wolf and rescue their new friend, but the wolf doesn't give up. He goes after them, determined to get his “lunch” back!

My Thoughts:
Granted I'm not the target audience not do I have a little one to read to but I still love picture books. This one is just cute. Not fabulous, just cute. I was thinking the fairy-tale was the boy who cried wolf when the boy showed up but the three little pigs showed up too.

I like Gertrude and Toby. Their friendship shows through but I'm not sure about the sneaking off part of the story. I like that Gertrude was willing to help someone he didn't know (the boy) then later was willing to give up something (the fish) to save everyone from the wolf.

I would get it if I had a little one but I would hope that it wasn't one they wanted to have read to them over and over and over again.

Thoughts On . . . Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress

Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress
by Christine Baldacchino

Illustrated by: Isabelle Malenfant
Published by: Groundwood Books/House of Anansi Press
Published: May 2014
ISBN #9781554983476
genre: children's book (Social Situations, Self-Esteem, Friendships)
32 pages

formats available: ebook, hardcover

Author's website | Facebook | Twitter

Book Description:
Morris has a great imagination. He paints amazing pictures and he loves his classroom's dress-up center, especially the tangerine dress. It reminds him of tigers, the sun and his mother's hair.

But the children in Morris’s class don’t understand. Dresses, they say, are for girls. And Morris certainly isn’t welcome in the spaceship some of his classmates are building. Astronauts, they say, don’t wear dresses.

One day when Morris feels all alone, and sick from the taunts of his classmates, his mother lets him stay home from school. Morris reads about elephants, and puts together a puzzle, and dreams of a fantastic space adventure with his cat, Moo.

Inspired by his dream, Morris paints the incredible scene he saw, and brings it with him to school. He builds his own spaceship, hangs his painting on the front of it and takes two of his classmates on an outer space adventure.

With warm, dreamy illustrations Isabelle Malenfant perfectly captures Morris’s vulnerability and the vibrancy of his imagination. This is a sweetly told story about the courage and creativity it takes to be different.

My Thoughts:
I have no problem with Morris wearing a dress. There is a problem with the kids teasing him and not letting him play on/with the "boy" stuff while wearing the dress. But you know what? I have a problem with Morris HOGGING the dress. First come, first served, is all well and good but Morris doesn't let anyone wear the dress.

So while we're teaching our children that bullying is wrong, let's also teach them that we need to share.

The book ends well, Kirkus Review said, "Baldacchino treats the tricky and controversial subject of expected gender behaviors and bullying with care and compassion, employing language and tone that avoid histrionics or preaching."

Thoughts On . . . Second Chance by Aiden Bates (NSFW story)

Second Chance
by Aiden Bates

Published by: CreateSpace
Published: August 2016
ISBN # 9781537102146
genre: romance-male/male, non-shifter pregancy
176 pages

formats available: ebook, trade paperback

Author's website | Facebook | Twitter

Book Description:
Traditionally, parents of alphas and omegas try to pair their children off young. It’s thought to be safest all around, and seventeen-year-old alpha Ben never questioned it. He hadn’t, that was, until his parents shoved him into a room with an omega named Tyler who was clearly too young to claim.

Ben did the right thing. He refused. He walked out of that room, told his family off, and accepted the consequences of that decision. After graduation, he left his family’s home, never to return.

Ten years later he takes a job in sunny San Diego. This might be the paradise he’s been dreaming of. The job pays well, the weather is perfect, and the apartment is in an exciting part of town. His neighbor turns out to be a super-hot runner who makes people-watching from the window a true pleasure every morning.

Except Running Guy isn’t just a pretty face. He turns out to be Tyler, the omega Ben walked away from ten years ago, and his life hasn’t been sunshine and roses since Ben left. They can’t deny their attraction for one another now, and it seems like they both have a second chance at love and happiness.

A wealthy omega real estate developer, however, threatens to make that second chance as disastrous as the first. Richard has his heart set on being claimed by Ben – and dead set against the social service agency where Ty works. Can Ben and Ty make their new love last?

My Thoughts:
I've enjoyed every mpreg book by Aiden that I've read so far and expected no less from Second Chance. What I wasn't expecting was the intense dislike I'd have for one of the characters or the fear about some of the things that character does.

You know how in some movies/shows there's one character you  just can't stand? My husband laughs when I mention it because that's the character you're supposed to dislike. The developer in this book is so over the top unlikable that I can find no redeeming values in him. I can't even say "but his company employees so many people" because of his behavior towards our main characters, I'm sure all his employees would be better off if the company was run by someone else!

I haven't finished the book yet, I came to a part that made my heart race. Ty was last seen leading a bunch of kids to the 3rd story fire escape because of a fire. Now that that scene is over, I'm trying not to skip ahead! I'm sure it's a HEA but dang, Ty didn't make it out of the building and is listed as unaccounted for. I want to know, what has the developer done with Ty?!

Taking a breathing break then diving back in!

Okay. Thanks to Aiden for not making me wait too long before finding out what happened to Ty.

Still. AWWWWWW

Going back in

Ben and Ty live in the Gaslamp area of San Diego. I've been there so when they're talking about going some place I can smile because I know where they're talking about. Knowing that about this story, makes his other stories also more real, like they could happen today. I'm just waiting to see a couple of guys walking down the street holding hands, while one of them is pregnant.

Done. Yes it was a happy-ever-after but the journey was full of miscommunication, sexy times, stubbornness and danger.

The kindle version has a link to a bonus chapter. You'll need to sign up for the author's newsletter/club but the chapter isn't necessary to enjoy the rest of the book. Although I am going to read it next. ;-)

Back of Book:
What would you do if you lost the one thing that mattered most?

Sixteen-year-old Jessica is a runner. It's not just what she does, it's who she is. So when a tragic accident causes her to lose one of her legs, she is shattered--inside and out.

Though the doctors say she'll be able to walk with a prosthetic limb, recovery is slow and full of pitfalls. Jessica wonders if the girl who died in the accident didn't get the better end of the deal. But as she struggles to reclaim her life, Jessica get to know Rosa--a girl with cerebral palsy whom she and her friends had always overlooked. Not only does Rosa come to Jessica's rescue in math, she also help her reach for a future that is full of unexpected opportunities.

And Jessica starts to wonder: Is it possible not only to walk again, but to run?

My Thoughts:
Wow. This is one of those "I laughed, I cried, I wanted to slap someone upside the head" type books.  ;-)

I didn't bother reading the back again before I read the book. Just jumped right in and we're at the hospital after surgery. Jessica is understandable depressed but I've seen Amy dance (Dancing with the Stars) so I'm thinking Jessica needs a small slap/wake up. On the other hand, I don't believe I'd be doing as well.

It's a little "High School Drama" but Jessica is on a high school track team. There is the cute popular boy she likes. The Rival's head games that she finally works around. The girl on the team only because a team sport will look good on a collage application-and the track team doesn't cut.  But this is so much more than a book about a teen who want to run again. It's not about the stares or the mean girls. It's about teamwork, family, and growing up. About friendship and never giving up. She's got family, a terrific best friend, a great coach, and Rosa.

Oh, man. Rosa becomes like a secret weapon.

This is a book about becoming a better person, even if you have help.

Vanessa's mom gets it but I don't know if Vanessa ever will.

edit: You might want to have tissues handy before starting to read. I cried all over my shirt because I didn't want to put the book down.

Prince Noah and the School Pirates

Author: Silke Schnee

Publisher: Plough Publishing House
ISBN: 978-0-87486-765-7
Published: August 1, 2016
genre: Children's Book

format available: hardcover

I didn't find any social media for this author (must be too busy with her school!) Bio at the publisher's site: here

Grade: B-

Description:
The prince, who starred in the book The Prince Who Was Just Himself, may be a little slower than other students, but he has no less joy in learning. In his kingdom, children go to school on sailing ships. There is a ship for girls and one for boys. There is a ship for children with an eye patch, a ship for children with one leg, and a ship for children who are slower learners. No one knows why there are so many different ships, but it has always been that way.

Then a terrible storm drives the ships into the hands of pirates. The boys and girls realize that they will only escape if everyone does what he or she does best. Through their adventures, they learn that diversity makes us strong and that every person has something to teach us.

My Thoughts:
I liked that it was recognized "Someone who can do so much belongs in school!" I was disappointed that each group was separate, because it had "always been done that way".

"The girls spent their days painting, embroidering, weaving, and knitting." Too bad for the girl who wants to learn Math, because "Math has never been taught to girls".

It didn't really get any better for the boys or the other groups. At least Prince Noah was having fun.

Then along comes the pirates! One of the students said the storm was coming but the adults couldn't see any clouds so they ignored him.

I love that the kids all work together to get free of the pirates, find their teachers, and get home. I really love that the adults learned that just because it has always been done that way doesn't mean there might not be another way.

This book has the same great illustrations as the first and a worthy addition to any school or public library. Or just a home library where they're not afraid of someone who is different.

Back of Book:
Who's been sleeping in the Alpha's bed?

Exiled from his pack by his father, Brice Walker has secretly come home to visit his ailing grandmother only to discover a human and very desirable female sleeping in his bed. Their attraction is instant. But his new bed buddy seems determined to resist his Southern charm and Alpha allure.

For Brice, fiercely independent Cassie not only represents a chance to build a new life in Walker's Run but is also his one true mate. Cassie's reluctance dissolves when a rogue shifter kidnaps her, and now she and Brice must work together to save his pack. But once she witnesses the savagery of wolfan justice, can Cassie accept Brice as man, beast and her true love?

My Thoughts:
Oh, wow. I'm only at 45% but the drama and sexual tension has been through the roof. There is an authoritative father, a scheming uncle, and two women. One he calls Sunshine who is from the wrong side of the tracks but smells like sunshine after a terrible storm and another he never wants to see again after the last stunt she pulled. Too bad she's in town and reserved the Honeymoon suite for them. And to top it all off, Granny died at the beginning of the book but we haven't gone to her funeral yet.

First kisses are fantastic
He tasted like a storybook Christmas, sparkly, exciting and overwhelmingly wonderful.

You expect danger when the kidnapping is mentioned on the back cover. You even expect some when you meet Victoria (the second woman) but other danger shows up that had me holding my breath. And Victoria proves the saying that beauty is skin deep.

Usually I can stop and write some then read some more but this time there were only the three breaks. I just got sucked into the story. I should mention that the sexual tension gets hotter before exploding.

I love that while paranormal stories don't all follow the same rules, they generally agree that if something smells rotten, it is rotten.

Release Date: September 2015
Genre: Children's Picture book

Book Blurb
The royal couple is looking forward to their third child. “He looks a little different,” muses the king at Prince Noah’s arrival. “He is not like the others,” agrees the queen. Soon they notice what a very special person he is, even though he can’t do everything his brothers can.

When the youngest prince disarms the cruel knight Scarface, the nation’s most dreaded enemy, with an act of compassion, everyone finally realizes how good it is that each person is unique.

My Thoughts
First I need to say that this is not a beginner reader's picture book. The words are on every other page like you'd expect with a picture book but this book has a more words per page, covering one-quarter of each two page spread. Two pictures cover the other three-quarters. This I like very much. I also like the illustrations.

The story doesn't come right out and say something like "this child has Down syndrome" or anything like that. The Queen and the King both mention that he looks different but the siblings accept him right away. The town people are horrid but Prince Noah is just happy to be out in the sun.

Like all good picture books, something bad almost happens but Prince Noah saves the day and all the town people love him. Prince Noah doesn't really care, he's just happy to be out in the sun.

Moral of the story? Be accepting, we are all different from each other as well as being the same. And then there's enjoy the journey for it is good to be out in the sun ;-)

I'm sad that I don't have a little one to read this too!

There is a follow up book where Prince Noah heads to school and deals with pirates. I've added the book to my shopping cart ;-)

Thoughts On . . . Cisco's Boy

Cisco's Boy
by A. C. Katt

Indiscreet, book 3
Published By: MLR Press, LLC
Published: Nov 2013
ISBN # 9781106038982
approx 220 pages
genre: romance-male/male, very sexy, HEA

author's website | Facebook

Book Description:
Master Cisco de Loria wants everything from his new sub Greg Harris, that is everything but love, in fact his contract expressly forbids it.

Dr. Greg Harris finally has the money to buy a submissive membership at Indiscreet, a gay BDSM club. The only thing he wants is to have Dr. Cisco de Loria as his Master. Cisco wants Greg too, but the one thing Greg most wants to give, Cisco refuses to take, Greg's love. Cisco is so sure he doesn't need love that he puts it in as a clause in their contract. If Greg ever mentions love, the contract is terminated. Cisco finds out the hard way that things somehow don't always work out the way you plan.

My Thoughts
(written as I read, crossing fingers there are no spoilers)

I first met Cisco and Greg while reading The Sunset Club series and was delighted to read that four of the characters had their own stories in the Indiscreet series.

I'm totally okay with BDSM stories but I think I've been spoiled by my own research and other writers. This D/s relationship, so far, doesn't feel correct. Several things come up during their first day that should have come during contract negotiations. Things an experienced Dom would have known about - at the very least, the club owner moderating the negotiations should have brought them up.

I love the characters themselves from the other series and their interactions with each other - I have high hopes for this book. Wish me luck!

grr . . .  Barebacking? Really? Is it still the first day? It wasn't even discussed! I'm really not sure about this series. If I didn't know about this couple from the other series that they show up in, I'd be trying to return this book.

back to reading, keeping my fingers crossed.

Getting better but the brand new sub and not quite a Dom qualities are showing through. It appears that Cisco doesn't really want a sub because he's a Dom, he wants a 24/7 (except work) maid/cook/boy-friend that he doesn't have to love. Oh, and total control of all the money. I'm hoping he gets his head out of his ass soon, I'm half way through the book.

Yes, yes, I know that even with a lot of mainstream couples, one partner has more control over the money than the other. My problem is that Cisco doesn't take the time to share with his sub how much money they have so when he buys a new Audi, on day two, the sub only has his own paycheck for reference and he's giving 75% of it to the Dom! How the hell is he (the sub) supposed to afford keep a new car in six months when the contract is up?

sigh, back to reading

Damn, communication is so important. Also add here a wow, that's a LOT of drama for only five days.

back to the book

Oh I was expecting the trouble (you'll be able to spot it too) but, wow, that was over the top! At least Greg gets his happy ever after. And they finally learn to communicate. Not really a spoiler

Final words: This was book 3 of the series but the first I've read. So, will I continue? Yes, I'll get the books that have Brian and Jim in them. Maybe the rest if they stay on sale.

one last edit: I've since read book 6 in the series and the writing/relationship issures flows much better.

Thoughts On . . . Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly

Wait, what?

This is a series about a dental office in a small town of shifters. All kinds of shifters. Think about it, where does a werelion go to get his teeth fixed when it is his lion's teeth that hurt?

The series is super fun, paranormal/shifter also romantic and gay. Did I lose anyone? The author has a prequel to the first book on her website, here. Each book is a different couple and all are on the short side. I'd love to see all the books and the prequel in print together.

Book Blurb:
The sexy chipmunk shifter isn’t afraid of the dentist; he’s in love with him.

Phillip has the best job working at the Paranormal Dentistry for the Fanged and Friendly. As a chipmunk shifter, Phillip has seen handsome men walk through the door but none so gorgeous as his boss and wolf shifter, Dr. Gunner Samuels. When he finds himself being manipulated by his best friend to ask the big bad wolf over for dinner, Phillip realizes his biggest dilemma, he’s never cooked a day in his life, let alone meat. Can Phillip pull off a fabulous dinner for two? And has Gunner had his eye on the sexy shifter all this time?

My Thoughts:
A chipmunk moves to town to work in the dental office. Book one is about him and his boss. Yes, an office romance! Finally Phillip, our chipmunk, asks his boss to dinner. Two problems. Not only does Phillip not cook, he's a vegetarian and doesn't even like the smell of meat. Problem two? His boss is a wolf.

Yes, there is a happy ending, this is fun, fictional romance after all, but the couple does have problems to work out.

I'm serious about the book being short so I can't tell you too much about it. The title should tell you how the cooking goes, the HEA should tell you it turns out well. What I haven't mentioned is the Mom who is worried about her first, and youngest, child that has left home. The 20 siblings. The serious nut storage issue that the chipmunks have. Oh, and the Mom. Did I mention her? Well, she bares repeating.

Book 2: Stalking the Hygienist
This time it is about Phillip's best friend the hygienist, a deer. And a lion. Yup, you read that right.

Book 3: Chipmunk Drizzled in Honey
Phillips brother NIkko comes to visit. Phillip and Nikko were the close growing up so it is natural that he is the first to come visit Phillip in White Pine. Now, Dallas doesn’t know if he wants to push the spunky chipmunk away or make love to him.

Book 3.5: A Paranormal Chipmunk Christmas
It’s time for the chipmunk brothers to take their bear and wolf home to meet the family for the holidays. Think about that. It is stressful enough to visit family at Christmas but there are all those siblings!

Book 4: Hot on a Chipmunk's Tail
Jason has a chance to move to White Pine. Will, his neighbor at home, has feelings for Jason but while Jason does have feelings for Will, he always clams up then runs. It doesn't help that Jason is a chipmunk that prefers to go unnoticed and Will is a mountain lion. This story is about Jason's introduction to life mostly on his own, what happens when Will shows up (you knew he would), and the antics of two of the brothers that came with Jason, the troublesome twins.

Book 5: A White Pine Chipmunk Invasion
Last year, Nikko and Phillip went home for Christmas. This year home comes to White Pine. Yes, Mom and Dad and all the kids have arrived.

Also, one of the twins, Winslow, is dating a crocodile that owns one of the few businesses that doesn't have a ban on the twins coming inside! So this is really Winslow's story that happens at Christmas while the family is visiting.

Thoughts On . . . the series Who Needs Christmas?

series: Who Needs Christmas?
author: Joyee Flynn
publisher: Siren Publishing
genre: male/male erotica, BDSM

available in kindle and print formats at amazon (searched 'Who needs Christmas Joyee Flynn': here)

available in several ebook formats at the publisher, here

A group of twelve elves who found each other after leaving the North Pole at different times has been living together for decades. They are comfortable with their new way of life away from the Christmas atmosphere they despise. The only things missing for these serious gamers are their human mates.

Yes, book 1 is called Screw Santa. Each Elf is gay. They didn't fit it well with the other elves at the North Pole and as being gay was frowned upon, they left. As we are introduced to the elves and their mates, we learn why they hate Christmas and it makes sense. They all have magic (duh!) but the strength varies according to age. Well, except for Shadow but you don't find that out until later. I'll let you find out the details on your own.

Screw Santa's elf is Horse. That's right, his name is Horse. All elves name themselves at the age of five when they are baptized in their magic. Each elf has a story about their name. Our first elf saw a magnificent creature and wanted his name to be the same. Unfortunately, the owners of the horse had named the animal Horse, so when asked, that's what they said.

Yeah, they got teased for their names as well.

There is definitely a "formula" to each book. We're introduced to the main character, he meets his mate, something goes wrong, everything works out, happy ever after. The books really up the sex between the two main characters and the "something goes wrong" is inventive.

For example, in one of the books, the human mate is a lawyer. He's decided to give his two weeks notice on Monday and come work for the elves. The Sunday night (actually Monday morning at 1 a.m.) before he can give notice, his boss sends him to bail out a new client. Tame right? Except the new client is the son of the local mob boss and a psychopath that likes to murder "pretty subs". He fixates on his new lawyer and catching him while everything else is going on becomes the "something goes wrong". And to make things worse, his old boss is a vampire and kidnaps him. See? Inventive.

As each can be read by itself you have to expect the repeating of information. Each mate gets the explanation of how the mating works and the mating ritual is repeated in most of the books. It's explained how the elves get by in the human world, the hobbies, their money, all with small changes between books.

The last chapter of the second book is all about Horse. His mate has found a way to help his get over why he hates Christmas. Because as one mate said it, "hate is an ugly emotion that I don’t want to have any room in your heart." This carries on through the rest of the books. The last book's elf, has a free story on the author's website.

These are not mainstream romance books. There is lots of sex between men, elements of BDSM, and toys like you wouldn't believe are used. The difference, for me, between erotica and porn is the story line. If you took each book and toned down the sex but left the story line alone, you'd still have a great book!

What about Christmas do the elves hate? One hates Santa himself, another Christmas music. Snowmen, mistletoe, Christmas trees, jingle bells, twinkle lights, and stockings are all on the list. Plus the others that I haven't re-read yet and don't remember. Let's see, candy canes (hot sugar burns!), cookies, and reindeer.

You know the kind of sugar cookie that you roll out and use cookie cutters? One the elves should have followed in his parent's footsteps but had trouble with the cookies. Too much flour, not enough flour, rolled too thin, not transferring to the cookie sheet right. Yeah, mine never come right either but no one ever made fun of me for it. The really sad thing is that most of the things the elves hate didn't start out that way but the parents and siblings helped prolong the discomfort then the community got involved and by the time the kid was 18 and could leave, there was a hatred so strong that true love was needed.

The books are HOT as well as fun. The author has turned our expectation of elves on it's ear. Also, they're all different from each other, just as you would expect in mainstream romance books. They're real people with quirks and insecurities just like us. They just have a little something extra.

Oh, witches, werecats, vampires, and werewolves make an appearance. Along with stupid people, bigotry and violence. Family, true love, and deep friendship are also part of the series.

Book Blurb
New York City event planner Liv Montgomery is burned out, sick of the bridezillas, the mad men, the desperate housewives, the anything but sweet sixteens. So the job of event organizer in the small, rural town of Celebration Bay, sounds like a little piece of heaven.

With the success of the Harvest on the Bay Festival, life is sweet, all apple crisp and homemade jams, cider donuts and pumpkin pies. But things hit a sour note when an itinerant entertainer is found dead, pinioned by an antique apple press.

Motives pile up higher than a bushel of apples and Liv must navigate her way through a maze of secrets, lies and Yankee taciturnity to find the killer before the Harvest on the Bay Festival heads for Foul Play at the Fair.

My Thoughts

New-to-me author but I love cozy mysteries and I needed a fall themed book. Plus, how do you resist a town with seasonal celebrations? [reminds me of another series that I love *cough* Fool's Gold *cough* ;-)]. Later I'll need a Halloween one. This series is perfect.

I feel for Liv. New in town, doesn't know the history of anyone, and she's been told that the previous event planner can hold a grudge for a long time. If her first festival is a success, things should go easier for the next festival.

Too bad there is a murder at one of the places they've advertised!

back to reading . . .
"We're in big trouble here, buddy," she said, absently pulling his ears with her free hand. "Big trouble. And I don't have a plan."

"Arf."

"I know. I always have a plan. Plan A, plan B, even sometimes a plan C. Best-laid plans, contingency plans . . . ."
Well, I guess that's what makes a great event planner but it isn't a great deal she's hoping to catch. She's hoping to catch a murderer!

I'm loving the quirky characters in town. I like the loyalty but am also having trouble with it. It's got to be rough to prove you can help when the locals close ranks on you.

back to reading . . .

I don't really have much interest in event planning and purchased this cozy because it was a Fall setting. That being said, I've loved the little tidbits of a event planner's life that show up. Liv is at a huge potluck and is told she needed to take a little of everything so no one felt slighted. She then mentions that she doesn't know how to eat a full plate standing up, just cocktail food. Later, she's going for a run and weather is mentioned. AccuWeather is her home page because the "appearance of complimentary umbrellas or the sudden raising of waterproof tents had saved more than a few events in the nick of time". This is so true but those of us at the event may not even think about all the things the planner has to think about and juggle just-in-case-options.

I'm still wondering what Janine, the previous event planner, will get up to to discredit Liv.

back to reading . . .

The next holiday is Halloween but book two is Christmas. I've got a couple of reading challenges that need a Halloween themed book. The question is, do I read the theme I need or next next book in the series? ;-)

FYI: Book 1.5 is Cold Turkey and it is a Thanksgiving foot race theme (with a dead body) so I've still got a Fall title!

Thoughts On . . . Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave

Eight Hundred Grapes

About the book:
There are secrets you share, and secrets you hide…

Growing up on her family’s Sonoma vineyard, Georgia Ford learned some important secrets. The secret number of grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine: eight hundred. The secret ingredient in her mother’s lasagna: chocolate. The secret behind ending a fight: hold hands.

But just a week before her wedding, thirty-year-old Georgia discovers her beloved fiancé has been keeping a secret so explosive, it will change their lives forever.

Georgia does what she’s always done: she returns to the family vineyard, expecting the comfort of her long-married parents, and her brothers, and everything familiar. But it turns out her fiancé is not the only one who’s been keeping secrets…

My Thoughts:
The book starts with a very lovely story about how her parents met then tells us about Georgia's car ride.

With only the clothes on my back and a hastily packed suitcase, I drove from sunny Southern California--the place that had been my home for the last fourteen years--to the small town in Northern California on the edge of the Russian River Valley. The place that'd been my home for my entire life until then.

Nine hours, five rest-spot stops, two terrible milkshakey coffee drinks (one vanilla, one strawberry), and a roll of Rolos later, I arrived in Sonoma County. I should have felt relief, but as I passed the familiar sign for Sebastopol--its wiry hills visible behind it--I caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview. My hair was falling out of its bun, my eyes were deeply unsettled, and I couldn't escape the feeling that I was about to walk into a new kind of hell.

So I turned around and started driving the nine hours back to Los Angeles.

Interesting. I'm sure the problem that sent her running is still in Los Angeles and since she's tired and hungry, she stays and heads to her brother Finn's tavern. Things are a little different than she expected but the part I liked . . .

Finn turned back for just a second. "Hey, Georgia . . ." he said.

"Yeah?"

"You know that you're still wearing your wedding dress, yes?" he said.

and I'm hooked! Back to reading . . .

As the saying goes, you can't go home again, so too it is with Georgia and while I'm loving the book and the twists, the real world has intruded into my reading time so I need to leave this unfinished.

Unfinished Thoughts On . . . Wishful Thinking by Kamy Wicoff

About the book:
Jennifer Sharpe is a single mom of two struggling to balance her work and home life. One fateful day, a brilliant physicist decides to play fairy godmother and install a time-travelling app on Jennifer’s phone: Wishful Thinking. Jennifer is finally able to devote herself fully to every aspect of her life, but why does Jennifer feel more busy than ever?

My Thoughts:
How could you not like this book. I've wanted to be in two places at once a bunch of times!

Real life interfered with getting the review done early so I brought the book on vacation. I'm sad to say I'm not loving it.

Maybe I'm not the target audience? I can't get passed the "whiny" single mother part. Your ex doesn't pay child support but looks like he's had botox? The boss that promised you time off for recitals is gone and the new boss wants you to work more hours? You're having trouble making ends meet? There is a solution for all of it. Change jobs, move if you have to, go to court. Maybe I've been out of the job market too long and it isn't that simple anymore but come on. Kids first. If you work extra to pay for extra stuff for your kids then can't enjoy the outcome, cut back on the extras.

I'm sad because I like the idea so much that I thought I'd love the book. I'm going to try again when I get home from vacation. Maybe it will make a difference if I'm in my own chair with the distractions I'm use to.

Thoughts on . . . Too Safe for Strangers

Too Safe for Strangers
by Deputy Sheriff Robert Kahn

Series: Bobby and Mandee's Safety Series
Publisher: Future Horizons
ISBN: 978-1885477750
Release Date: October 2001
Genre: picture book
24 Pages

format available: paperback

series' website

Book Blurb
Most children, especially children on the autism spectrum, accept adults' friendliness at face value. Sometimes it can have tragic consequences. Written by a Deputy Sheriff, this book is credited with foiling at least 22 stranger abductions. Characters Bobby and Mandee explain stranger danger in a way that is accessible, but not frightening, for children.
My Thoughts

I want to start at the back. There is a coloring page and a place to write down safe names and telephone numbers. I'm mixed about this - first, it's important info and I love to color. On the other hand, I don't want to teach kids it is okay to write/color in books. That's just me being picky.

There are a couple of other important pages at the end of the book. A list of question you can go over with your child to help reinforce what was learned. A list of safe adults such as a store clerk, when working, or the telephone worker, make sure you can see his truck. The final important page is about teaching your child about 911, such as when to call and when not to call.

This is a picture book in that there are drawings, few words and a large-size font.

Yes, that's duplicated from Too Smart for Bullies (review). There is also a spot to write in your code word.

This book is SCARY. Bobby isn't around much to save the day or even give good advice. The book goes over the difference between good strangers and bad strangers nicely and even though I expected it, I kind of jumped when Mandee reaches for the suckers and the BAD stranger grabs her.

We're brought up to be nice to everyone (or at least I hope so), this book tells us to be nice as well EXCEPT when an adult you don't know well tries to talk to you without your parent's being there. There are different scenarios with the solution.

I remember doing a code word with my kids. I also remember letting them leave my side when shopping but I always called out "children" when I was ready to go so people wouldn't hear me call out their names.

The author recommends role-playing this book with you and your child taking turns being the stranger. I'd recommend switching it up by also playing a good stranger who doesn't make the "safe adult" list.

Book Blurb
Most children accept adults’ friendliness at face value. Sometimes it can have tragic consequences. The Bobby and Mandee series of safety books help children deal with today’s problems.

Bullies, Beware! This is a little book is going to have a big impact! In this moral-driven story, Mandee tells big brother Bobby how a bully took all her money. Bobby stresses that she needs adult help, and explains what to do if it happens again. Don't argue; just walk or run away; tell a trusted adult, or call 911. If the adult doesn't believe you, tell another adult until you find someone who understands.

My Thoughts
I want to start at the back. There is a coloring page and a place to write down safe names and telephone numbers. I'm mixed about this - first, it's important info and I love to color. On the other hand, I don't want to teach kids it is okay to write/color in books. That's just me being picky.

The final important page is about teaching your child about 911, such as when to call and when not to call.

This is a picture book in that there are drawings, few words and a large-size font. This was an uncomfortable book to read but one that every parent should read. I only had a couple of problems with it.

Mandee's walking home from the public pool all by herself in just a swimsuit and shoes. First, throw a pair of shorts on the kid. Second, why was she swimming by herself? (Fine. If she had on shorts you may not think "swimsuit" and she may have met friends there. Still.)

The other thing is about the bully "One reason a child is a bully is because someone is being a bully to them." Then goes on to list family or someone who lives with them in their house. This bothered me for two reasons and I'm sure the research was done to back up the wording, just thinking could be  should have been used instead of is. And just family members? Maybe they're being bullied by an older kid and they're just passing it down.

Off soapbox. . .

Bobby is an awesome big brother! I love that all the things an adult would say to help was being said by Bobby and he still takes Mandee to tell Mom and Dad. Because, you know, this is not a secret to keep. I hope every parent and responsible adult reads this.

The author's recommend role-playing the book with you and your child taking turns playing the bully and the one being bullied.

Thoughts on . . . Captured Innocence by Kennedy Layne

Hey family? This book is sexier than I usually tell you about so could you please skip this post? ;-)

release date: Sep 2013
ISBN: 978-0989973908

formats available: print, ebook

from the author:
When former Marine, Connor Ortega, was ordered into the offices of Crest Security Agency on a Saturday morning, he didn't expect the latest case to hit so close to home. A submissive has been murdered in a particularly vicious manner and to bring her killer to justice, he must go undercover. Not hard to do considering he's already part of the BDSM lifestyle.

Lauren Bailey, a local vendor of bejeweled erotic implements, lives vicariously through her clients due to her fear of bondage. When Connor's dominant side can't resist trying to ease her anxieties, she accepts his proposal and agrees to his one stipulation...keep things casual.

When the killer sets his sights on Lauren, Connor is forced to rethink their relationship. He has the training it takes to catch a murderer, but does he have the courage to escape his inner demons and capture Lauren's heart?

my thoughts:
I've been avoiding a favorite genre ever since 50 Shades came out. I read too many reviews to be happy buying it then someone asked, "Don't you think you should read it before you explain why it's a bad book?" Fine. Wow, couldn't finish it. Not like the usual BDSM books I buy at all. I thought he was a stalker and never even got to the sex.

So this book comes up and I'm wondering if it will follow the same way.

Nope. First, the review I read was from Anna (here) and I trust her. Started the book early Friday morning and read until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Friday night I'm reading through dinner.

Now that you know where I'm coming from . . .

Lauren is no shrinking violet, or a virgin, and has some knowledge of the lifestyle. Conner surprises us both with his willingness to "go vanilla" for the most part. It eases Lauren's mind but I'm sure Conner is also thinking "hey, sex".

The nice thing about the story is that it isn't a sex story with a plot. It is true that a submissive is killed while in what looks to be a scene. Also true, the main male lead is a Dom and the lead female works with sex toys but I feel the who-done-it part would be just as strong with sexual tension instead of sex. That being said . . . I liked the sex. A lot.  ;-)  At one point they're snowed in and they're playful in their interactions. I didn't say the sex wasn't hot, just that they felt real to me.
She stared at his lips a little too long, but found that her body was ready for another tumble in the sheets… even though she couldn’t remember what round of sex they were on. She was coming to really appreciate this snowstorm.

back to reading . . .

Things weren’t going as planned. . . . It was time to clean up his mess. Loose ends had to be clipped and he knew just who to start with.
See? Not only great sex but a great story. Can't wait to find out how this ends!

back to reading . . .

Wow. I did not see that coming! My copy has a sneak peek of book 2 which I'll read later. Time for dinner, finally.

Don't be scared of the BDSM aspect, it isn't that heavy, and while the sex is there and you shouldn't skip it, it really isn't a sex book. Think jalapeno when mainstream books are chili pepper.

back of book:
The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?

My Thoughts:
The witch looks like a witch. She's got the black cape, black pointy hat, cauldron, cat, wand, and a wart on the nose. Except the cat is not black, there is a yellow polka-dot bow in her hair and a smile on her face. Of course, you'd be smiling too . . .
How the cat purred
and how the witch grinned,
as they sat on their broomstick
and flew through the wind.
Sounds perfectly delightful until the wind blow her hat off. Luckily, every time she loses something, someone is on the ground and finds it for her.

The scary part is not the hungry dragon. Sure the dragon breaths fire and holds a limp witch in his arms as he gets ready to feast but the scary part is ...
From out of a ditch
rose a horrible beast.
It was tall, dark, and sticky,
and feathered and furred.
It had four frightful heads,
it had wings like a bird.
And its terrible voice,
when it started to speak,
was a yowl and a growl
and a croak and a shriek.
It dripped and it squelched
as it strode from the ditch,
And it said to the dragon,
"Buzz off!--
THAT'S MY WITCH!"
And a picture to go along with the text. Of course, if you've been paying attention, you'll notice that these are the witch's friends all covered in mud. :-D

Then after a bath and a spell, the witch had
A TRULY MAGNIFICENT BROOM!

"Yes!" cried the witch,
and they all clambered on.
The witch tapped the broomstick and
whoosh! they were gone.
and yes, it was a truly magnificent broom with room for everyone.

Cute book with a bit of scary that can be made more scary as your child gets older. I really enjoyed this book although I've only read it three times. There are no kids in the house to ask for repeated readings.

Book Blurb:
Kitty Skinner meets the perfect guy, he's kind, considerate and sexy as hell. She hopes to spend her favorite holiday with him, Christmas Eve. The only problem is, Aaron treats her like his best friend, not the girlfriend she dreams of being. To make matters worse he’s found his perfect girl and wants Kitty to help plan their first date.

Aaron Tyler thinks Kitty is sweet, talented and someone he can settle down with, but believes he has to deceive her into believing he cares for someone else to win her heart.

Nothing goes as planned when one mishap after another prevents them from admitting their true feelings.

My Thoughts:
I've had the book awhile and didn't reread the blurb before starting it. Now I'm thinking poor Kitty!, she's fantasizing about the guy she's at the football game with and he thinks they need to talk after the game. Dang, she was told Aaron never dated a girl more than once but I'm thinking this isn't much of a date!

off to read . . .

This could have gone very badly! The deception could have had Kitty holding true to her phone call . . . "Her words sounded final, as though she never wanted to see him again" but fiction often demands a happy-ever-after.

There are a couple of questions but I believe one could be answered reading the previous books in the series and the other if the book itself was longer.

This could have been a quick and fun read but I had formatting problems with my review copy. The book itself was a sweet read and I'm thinking the two friends need books of their own.

off to check to see if they do!

Book Blurb
Member of the Black Hills Pack in Los Lobos, South Dakota, Jace Matthews is sent to check out the new owner of a piece of land adjoining his packs. Once he steps into her small bookstore in Collins, he’s taken by surprise by the small, prim woman behind the counter. At once, he recognizes his mate. While the wolf inside urges him to complete the bond, Jace knows he must take his time with his human mate. But when danger arises, threatening Michelle’s life, Jace is done waiting. It’s time to claim his mate.

After she inherits her aunt’s property, Michelle Sanders moves to Collins, South Dakota, to escape the monotony of her routine life. Unfortunately, the only person she manages to befriend is not only the hottest guy on the planet, but also gay. However, she never expects a favor for her sexy new friend to result in a series of weird events that will change her life forever.

My Thoughts
This is book 5. Usually I feel like I missed something and it distracts from the story. I didn't get that with this one. I do want to read more about the wolves but don't have the frustration of not knowing the whole story. That being said, I could tell that there was more to be said and will continue with the series.

Romance type stories usually have a happy ever after so we know Jace and Michelle get together. What we don't expect are the dangers and stumbles along the way that add up to a nice story. I really liked Michelle. She felt sassy as well as brave to me. Not too sure about Kate but she is Jace's sister and the situation did stink so maybe her behavior is excused somewhat.

What to say about Jace. Well, he's a male shifter and they're always written extra spicy but he's a little clueless when we first meet him and I loved that. He's also protective and ruthless when he needs to be.

The sexual tension was there from the beginning. From Jace's side, Michelle is his mate but also human so he's trying to be careful but I could hear his wolf growling in the background. From Michelle's side, she's found her dream man and "The fact he was gay hadn’t affected her late night fantasies one iota." and then later . . .
"there was a man in her shower. A naked man. With the sexiest ass she’d ever seen. Said naked man slowly turned, letting the water sluice over his muscular, tanned frame. Unable to glance away, she ate up every second of the display."
Whew!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
