I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Wow, what a Monday! plus Teaser and Intro

I can't wait for next Monday to share what happened this Monday (I'm sure I'll repeat myself next Monday).....The family was traveling through Las Vegas after spending time at a family reunion. We stopped for lunch and after advice from my brother joined the crowd at The Silverton. The buffet was very nice but because of a special anniversary deal the line was verrry long. We joined their loyalty club and received a free lunch and $5 credit for slot play.

My Mom didn't have her ID so she couldn't get a card. My Dad lost his $5. Grandpa introduced his youngest grandson to slot play and Son won $5.06 and cashed out. Husband won $42! Now, I just wanted to leave and we were playing the penny slots. I could have moved but the game was "Enchanted Unicorn" so I stayed there. Max Bet was clicked a couple of times....and $340 later I was cashing out!

So, that's my news - oh, and my Mom asked how many books I was going to get - the one who doesn't play the slots won big!

Ouch, was that the gambling bug that just bit me?

Every Tuesday, she'll be posting the opening paragraph (maybe two) of her current read. Why don't you join us?

I bravely spent many months embedded in the marathon-training world. Much like the reporters who travel with soldiers during wartime, I barely made it out to tell my tale. What follows are my stories from the frontlines (or the backlines, as it were), as well as a training guide for those who want to follow in my recliner-to-race-day footsteps. How does one go from being a couch potato to finishing a marathon? One consumes a lot of ibuprofen.

Thoughts on...Killer Weekend by Ridley Pearson

dang, this is a DNF. A couple of the characters needed to be hit upside the head and I just couldn't deal with them. The sheriff and the assassin were very well written but I could have done without the sheriff's father.

I brought this on vacation with me and that might have been a mistake since it is a new author for me. The first mistake may have been choosing this book mainly because it is set in Idaho!

Unfortunately, this was a library book and must go back. There is no chance for it to sit on my shelves until I forget about it and re-discover it at another time.

This is the first in a trilogy and I hope I'll remember to try it again later.

    Happy Monday

Not sure if it's really a happy Monday. I'm still in the car :-( Five days of vacation and that included four days of driving 5 hours/day. We could have done it quicker but it was better for my parents to split up the driving. You'll have to wait to hear about the vacation.

I have plans to make cookies and chocolate zucchini bread to take to the reunion. Wonder if I did? (no cookies but the bread came out tasty)

This was scheduled for today and updated before I left with no idea if I'd be able to update again while on vacation. I did received some great books before I left and had a hard time not changing my pile of books to take! (free wifi at lunch time - hotel last night charged for internet!)

Hope everyone has plans for a great week.

The little man, named Jemlock, drew his sword, richly decorated with jewels he'd earned during his many adventures. He pulled his arm back, ready to attack the fierce dragon hurling fireballs in front of him. The dragon's eyes closed to slits as he lowered his huge heard level with Jemlock's. With every ounce of strength in his body, Jemlock struck once, twice, three times. His sword sliced through the dragon's chest, exposing the leathery creature's massive heart.

    Thoughts on...Vengeance by A.J. Scudiere

Just as watching a movie without the sound track leaves much to be desired, A.J. adds a sound track to Vengeance. If you like audio books, get ready to be surprised.

I loved listening to this story but realized that I get too distracted listening. Guess I should have known, I once fell asleep listening to Harry Potter! Audio problems aside, I really like this book.

Would have been a great teaser....
If he’d had a heart that might have broken it – that the baby stayed quiet. To be that young and already know that crying did you no good. Or worse.

There are different narrators depending on who the main character is at the time and different voices for different characters when they're speaking. Actually, not just voices....different people!

Because of my distraction problem with audio books, which I didn't know was so great, I haven't finished the audio but I can truly say I've enjoyed listening and am looking forward to hearing the rest.

The story is well written and very descriptive. Listening to the wheezing while the narrator talks about the man trying to breathe through a punctured lung is quite an experience.

Would I purchase more AudioMovies? Not sure. I can read faster than they can speak but it is a pleasure listening. If I had a long commute (or any at all) I would try harder to get through my problem with audio but as it is, I think I should stick to print. I think I'll try crocheting while listening, maybe that will help ;-)

Would I purchase print books by this author? Absolutely.

Claymore Beller tried to do the right thing. It was the last thing he did. In retaliation for his efforts, his mafia bosses laid waste to his family. Only the youngest–Cynthia–came up fighting.

Three years ago, Lee Maxwell made the same error. His wife and daughter paid for his mistake. In a haze of booze and regret, Lee disappeared.

Now, Owen Dunham is following the trail of the ‘Grudge Ninja’–only all his evidence is false and the profilers can’t get their heads around anything except the obvious fact that the Ninja is extracting a deadly revenge for an old wrong.

As the Ninja gets bolder and far more dangerous, Owen is forced to recognize that he hasn’t always made the right decisions–he’s spent far too much time trying to be right. Even as he questions whether bringing in the ninja is the right thing to do, the voice in the back of his head is telling him that it will make his career…

I finally got around to taking pictures of the jewelry I made.

Next up: a review of Vengeance, moving my daughter (own apartment), getting ready for-and going to-a family reunion. Luckily I can read in the car so I'm hoping to get a couple of books read, maybe work on a blanket. I've completed a couple of challenges so I need to post about those and I've added some books to my wish list.

    Guest post: author A.J. Scudiere

Did you ever want to write?

Many readers are writers. I was a reader long before I made it firmly to the other side. We all have something, some story, that we want to share . . .but how do you go from that to being a writer? Some will tell you that you have to get published, but I say that isn’t so . . . It’s really all about doing what you want.

What’s your final goal? Do you want to make a book of family stories? They’ll be good for the family reunion, and for generations after. You can do that. Do you want to write poetry for magazines? Comics? Screenplays? Romance novels? There are so many options out there, that your best bet is to define where you want to go first.

Writers always ask me ‘what can I do to improve?’ but that answer is different every time. For many people a writer’s group of like-minded individuals can be a great help – but that requires two important pieces: 1) you must find dedicated people. It’s no good if you don’t actually read each others’ work and make thoughtful comments. 2) you must be a dedicated person. This means you’ll spend a good part ofyour time reading others’ works and thinking up thoughtful comments. Writers groups can be hard to find for both these reasons.

Classes are always available, but can be troublesome. Who is teaching them? And why? A great recommendation here is to take a class in a similar or helpful genre that is not your own. I write thrillers but took courses in prose poetry and short stories. I became a much better writer because of those, and the criticisms (which you will get!) will be much easier to bear because this isn’t your genre (I didn’t care if my poetry wasn’t good. I wasn’t a poet!) and you’ll learn something valuable, because no one is trying to change your ‘baby’ or critiquing your pet project this way.

I wrote two novels for practice before I started writing the first one I got published. It wasn’t a short journey, and though I thought I was ready a long time ago, I wasn’t. You can do it! But it requires dedication.

Come check out the writer’s blog at Phoenix, the book. It has everything I wish I had known back when I started. Ask questions, bring ideas, join us! And if you’re a reader, you can read the story of a book from start to print, to AudioMovie (read about audiomovies at AJsAudioMovies.com).

A.J. Scudiere is the author of God's Eye which will be reviewed here on the 18th. Check out this fantastic giveaway but hurry, it ends July 20!

    Happy Monday

Not much to talk about. I've hit a wall with my reading but have done so well with my challenges this year I made a plan and hope to bust through the wall. The Lair will be a tour stop on the 18th for God's Eye so that book must be read/reviewed.

Since I haven't felt like reading, I finished a baby blanket and started a new one (new stitch!). I also made a necklace to go with a new skirt. It's a double strand and there were enough beads left over for a pair of double drop earrings and three bracelets. No pictures yet.

Hope everyone has plans for a great week.

    Happy Monday

and a have a safe 4th of July to all my US friends. I love that we celebrate our independence but I don't like the hate that still abounds, keeping some of us from enjoying our independence to the fullest. The celebrations themselves can be scary - can you believe that some people shoot their guns up into the air? Where do they think the bullet is going to go!

and off my soapbox...... I did fairly well in avoiding book purchases this week but the Dollar Spot at Target got me and so did the used book sale at the library. Plus all the ebook publishers are right there, all the time, taunting me with great books ;)

    A is for...The Zero Game

26 letters and 52 weeks. You'll always know what letter because week 1 is letter "A" and so is week 27 :-) Find a book that you find interesting who's title starts with this week's letter. If you've reviewed it, give us a link, but it isn't necessary.

    Z is for...

    The Zero Game
    by Brad Meltzer

    Grand Central Publishing
    February 2005
    Mass Market Paperback

    From the publisher:
Matthew Mercer and Harris Sandler are best friends who have plum jobs as senior staffers to well-respected congressmen. But after a decade in Washington, idealism has faded to disillusionment, and they're bored. Then one of them finds out about the clandestine Zero Game. It starts out as good fun-a simple wager between friends. But when someone close to them ends up dead, Harris and Matthew realize the game is far more sinister than they ever imagined-and that they're about to be the game's next victims. On the run, they turn to the only person they can trust: a 16-year-old Senate page who can move around the Capitol undetected. As a ruthless killer creeps closer, this idealistic page not only holds the key to saving their lives, but is also determined to redeem them in the process.

This is the second book by Brad Meltzer that I own. I enjoyed The Book of Lies so much I thought I'd try this one. Only problem of course is that I haven't read it yet! Well, the two books aren't anything alike either.
