I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Shelf-ies, Quotes and Cozy Mysteries

Happy Saturday!

I was excited to see a Cozy Mystery Saturday but her site isn't active. I still love the idea so I'll be telling you about a cozy on my shelf.

The Shelf-ies idea came from Kimberlyfaye Reads. I'll spotlight one book from my TBR pile.

Quotes should be self-explanatory. If I find a good one, it will get posted. It used to be Quote it Sat at Freda's Voice but I didn't find recent ones so I don't know if she's still doing it. Found Quote-tastic at Herding Cats and Burning Soup.

~ Quote ~
“The gods will not give you a burden that you cannot carry.”

“And if they do?” Orinakin asked, simply wanting to hear what Selorin’s answer would be.

Selorin smiled. “Then they will also provide you with a wheelbarrow in which to bear it."
In This Land by Matthew Haldeman-Time
an on-line serial

~ Cozy ~ This was so long ago I don't remember when I bought it!
Kill One, Knit Two by Maggie Sefton
Kelly Flynn Mysteries, 2005, mass market paperback
(1st of 14 books in the knitting books - own 11)

Despite the fact that her aunt was an expert knitter, Kelly Flynn never picked up a pair of knitting needles she liked—until she strolled into House of Lambspun. Now, in the first in a brand-new series, she learns how to knit one, purl two, and untangle the mystery behind her aunt's murder.

Kelly Flynn would be the first to admit her life in Washington, D.C. is a little on the dull side. But coming back to Colorado for her beloved aunt's funeral wasn't the kind of excitement she was seeking. The police are convinced that her Aunt Helen's death was the result of a burglary gone bad, but for the accountant in Kelly, things just aren't adding up. After all, why would her sensible, sixty-eight-year-old aunt borrow $20,000 just days before her death? With the help of the knitting regulars at House of Lambspun, Kelly gets a few lessons in turning out a sumptuously colored scarf and in luring a killer out of hiding.

Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn
historical romance (Regency period), 2016, mass market paperback

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

I forced myself to take one step forward, then another, until I made it to the front door and touched my fingers to the latch.

"What do I do when I get inside?"

"Follow your gut," Frankie said.
My gut told me to run. But I knew I could do this. I had to do this. And so, I slipped inside.

To Helvetica and Back by Paige Shelton
A Dangerous Type, 2015, mass market paperback

Star City is known for its slopes and its powder. But nestled in the valley of this ski resort town is a side street full of shops that specialize in the simple charms of earlier eras. One of those shops is the Rescued Word, where Chester Henry and his adult granddaughter Clare lovingly repair old typewriters and restore old books. Who ever thought their quaint store would hold the key to some modern-day trouble?

When a stranger to town demands they turn over an antique Underwood typewriter they’re repairing for a customer, Clare fears she may need to be rescued. A call to the police scares the man off, but later Clare finds his dead body in the back alley. What about a dusty old typewriter could possibly be worth killing for?

The Martian by Andy Weir
science fiction, 2015-movie tie-in edition, mass market paperback

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

A Peach of a Murder by Livia J. Washburn (blog)
A Fresh Baked Mystery

All year round, retired schoolteacher Phyllis Newsom is as sweet as peach pie-except during the Peach Festival, whose blue ribbon has slipped through Phyllis's fingers more than once...

Everyone's a little shook up when the corpse of a no-good local turns up underneath a car in a local garage. But even as Phyllis engages in some amateur sleuthing, she won't let it distract her from out-baking her rivals and winning the upcoming Peach Festival contest.

She and all the other contestants guard their secret, original recipes with their lives-and talk a whole lot of trash. With her unusual Spicy Peach Cobbler, Phyllis hopes to knock 'em dead. But that's just an expression-never in her wildest dreams did she think her cobbler would actually kill a judge. Now, she's suspected of murder-and she's got to bake this case wide open.

The Perfect Touch by Elizabeth Lowell
romantic suspense, 2016, mass market paperback

An art dealer and owner of her own design studio, Perfect Touch, Sara Medina travels the world to find the ideal artwork for her clients. Her sophisticated, comfortable life in San Francisco is light years away from the poverty of her family’s dairy farm, and Sara will do whatever it takes to keep her business strong. A dedicated urban career woman focused on her work, she doesn’t have time or energy for a family or distracting romantic entanglements.

Jay Vermilion recently inherited his family’s ranch near Wyoming’s breathtaking Grand Teton Mountains—and the estates of the rich and restless. While he was fighting in two wars, his father tried to keep the homestead running, until illness stole his fight and then his life. Jay is determined to restore Vermilion Sky, but first he’s got to settle a vicious battle with his former stepmother over some of his late father’s paintings. The last thing on his mind is finding a wife and creating a seventh generation of Vermilions.

When Jay hires Sara to handle his father’s artwork, it’s love at first sight—a mutually inconvenient attraction that is soon complicated by a double murder at the edge of the ranch and a potential betrayal even closer to home. Working together to unmask a murderer, Sara and Jay try to fight the intense heat between them. Then the killer targets Sara. And suddenly Jay, the war-weary soldier, finds something he’s once again willing to die for…

I walked into my bedroom and heard Sneakers meow. He wasn't on the bed, looked on the floor on the other side...nope. Weird. Where was he? Moved the laundry basket that was sitting on a hamper and...

I'm so glad it wasn't filled with clean clothes! And yes, he's done that before.

M and I went to our county fair. There was a table decoration display/contest (girl scouts?) and one of the categories was "Bring on the Books". I saw tables decorated based on Hawaii, The Secret Garden, Twenty Leagues Under the Sea, Gone with the Wind, and Fahrenheit 451. I loved Hawaii, three others were nice but Fahrenheit 451 was disturbingly good.

I saw my first book related table on one side and when I came around to this side, it was obvious which book this was by the background.

It's the details really. The fire boots salt and pepper shaker, the extinguisher and the, gasp, burned books! I think there were several banned books in the pile in back but it wouldn't surprise me if they were from the book, other stories that people were living.

Check out the table legs!

Oh, each table also has a menu to go along with the theme. This menu was grilled this and flame-broiled that...can you read it?

dang, wish I could remember what her score was!

We've now been in this house for 19 Memorial Days. I know this because we moved in in the middle of May and then said "hey, we have a pool, let's have a party" and the family all came over and had a party in our new pool. With packing boxes everywhere!

Soon it was "My children don't ask if we're going to your house anymore, they ask what time". Then it became "one year you're going to decide not to do it and we're going to show up anyways".

One of the best things is jumping off the patio roof into the pool (it's ten feet at the deep end) and why yes, it does look a long way down.....

but it's still fun!

I spent some time at my SIL's home, watching the house and playing with the dogs. I had a great time with Splash and Lucky. I received a thank you phone call (all that I expected). I know she had a better trip knowing the dogs were cared for and I was happy to do it. Imagine my surprise when I received a package in the mail from Splash and Lucky! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Chocolate and book money!

The family went to the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park this week. You may remember it as the Wild Animal Park. We took a truck tour (extra) and were able to feed a giraffe and a couple of Rhinos. Then stopped in the Lorikeet exhibit and got one picture before the camera battery died. For just a little bit, I had four birds on me!

This is Sneakers. He thought we put the table there so he could stare out the window easier. The tree just made it a nice spot to nap.

This is Frisky, Sneaker's sister. She's waiting for me to put the camera down so she can sit on my lap instead of next to me. "Come on Mom, put the book back down!"

Quote...

This is a beautiful quote that I got from Books on the Nightstand, who got it from Paul at PK in the Terrarium

written in 1959
"The only way to make a library safe is to lock people out of it. As long as they are allowed to read the books 'any old time they have a mind to,' libraries will remain the nurseries of heresy and independence of thought. They will, in fact, preserve that freedom which is a far more important part of our lives than any ideology or orthodoxy, the freedom that dissolves orthodoxies and inspires solutions to the ever-changing challenges of the future. I hope that your library and mine will continue in this way to be dangerous for many years to come."

-- Edmund S. Morgan, in the essay "Dangerous Books" (reprinted in his splendid new book American Heroes.
