I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Fatal Error by Colleen Thompson (#80)

This book is listed as Romantic Suspense. I found it to be more suspense than romantic. My heart pounded, I jerked in surprise and put the book down several times just to catch my breath. I've been reading a lot of small town romances and ended up falling in love and wanting to move there. This book didn't give me that feeling. I thought it was a great example of what can go wrong in a small town. The Sheriff who has been in office for too long. The Ladies Group that basically runs the school board. The narrow-minded and petty people that show up everywhere, just in larger number here. The Mother in denial and looking to blame anyone else for her son's behavior.

There are also the two ladies who have been friends with her Mother forever and always come through in a pinch. The almost high school drop-outs with redeeming qualities. The brother-in-law who does what is right. The sister who comes through in the end.

And the stalker.

The imagery used to describe the beauty of the wasteland surrounding the town made me think I was there.
His gaze rose to where, far above the sky-stretched arms of ocotillos, a buzzard floated kite like on the breeze. The dark bird glided toward the distant purple smudge of foothills, its apparent aimlessness a study in deception...he opened his hand and let the hot breeze carry the feathers away. It skimmed along the sand until the lost sight of it among a thorny mass of cholla cactus.
The imagery isn't just for the location, it works very well with the characters too.
. . . he had failed so utterly that she would never see him as more than a ... loser, a vindictive ... who'd struck out at her like a toddler in a tantrum. Screaming with rage at hte thought, he swept the photos and the papers off the table, his wrist smearing a bloody arc across its cool tiled surface.

It looked almost like a sunset, he thought in the last moments before his intolerable. existence flickered and went out.

I enjoyed this one very much and am looking forward to reading more of her books but due to space limitations, I'll use the library.

West Texas gossip paints every story a more interesting shade, especially when a married man goes missing with a small-town banker’s wife and a stolen fortune. Susan Maddox is tired of feeling like an abandoned woman, and even angrier when neighbors insist she’s the one getting away with murder. Maybe her handsome-as-sin, bad-boy brother-in-law isn’t the smartest choice of an ally, especially since she’s never been able to forget a star-studded night in his convertible back in high school. But who else can she trust to recover damning information from her husband’s crashed hard drive? Who else can pick up the pieces when intruders set fire to her home, a truck runs her off the road, and a trail of dead men stops her cold? Who else will help her uncover a fatal error?

Mack has a fight ahead of him if he wants to break the red-haired devil who’s haunted him for so long…

Mack Wilson gave his heart and virginity to the only man he swore he’d ever love. Justin threw that love back at him a day later, mocking Mack and his feelings. Mack never got past it, or Justin’s abandonment. Justin left the day after he and Mack made love, and over a decade later, Mack gets the shock of his life when he’s watching a wild, beautiful untamed red stallion throw a hell of a hissy fit in the corral. The horse reminds him of Justin. Mack is still raw from the pain, never having got past it.

Then Justin is there, ripping away the bandages of their past and pulling all the hurt and anger out of Mack, refusing to let Mack run him off. Refusing to let Mack go.

Mack hates Justin—doesn’t he? Or will he listen to Justin and give a chance to try to make amends? Can he make amends, when there’s someone waiting to tear them apart—again?

~*~*~
The heartache and the anger leaches off the pages. The love, sex and understanding come through just as strong. There is a fabulous twist and another one out of left field.  My only complaint is there isn't enough of the horse in the story but that may be my cowgirl-heart speaking.

I'm hoping this is the start of a series.

Somewhere . . . deep inside the United States government is a closely guarded list. Once your name is on the list, it doesn’t come off . . . until you’re dead.

Someone . . . has just added counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath’s name. Somehow . . . Harvath must evade assassination long enough to untangle who has targeted him and why.

Somewhere, someone, somehow . . . can put all the pieces together. But Harvath must get to that person before the United States suffers the most withering terrorist attack ever conceived.

~*~*~
There is an interesting author's note . . .
All of the technology contained in this novel is based on systems currently deployed, or in the final stages of development, by the United States government and its partners.
all that data gathering is for our own good of course.

This book is frighteningly realistic and those that try to say anything will come across as paranoid.

What would happen if you were accused of being a threat to the United States simply because you had a couple months supply of food? The reason you were targeted? You walked through a mall looking like you were searching for something and had a higher than normal heartbeat.

The surveillance happening in this book is too scary for words. The power one company/man can have is beyond belief but so realistic I want to start looking for that private island. Too bad I won't get internet or mail service. Oh, wait, that's one two of the things they're taking note of.

I'll just keep reading and keep my head down, better to avoid the cameras that way. Pay cash and be careful of what you search for. Remember, it isn't always friends looking at your Facebook account or reading your Twitter feed.

This may be fiction but it's just too realistic and current not to be aware of.

Gordon lives with his mother in the hidden kingdom of Ugladunga. Every day, the adult giraffes gather on the other side of the waterfall, but the kids meet to play the game Mulunga Doo in pairs: one boy and one girl. When Gordon is asked to play by Gary, the other young giraffes laugh at them and ask Gordon if he's a girl? Hurt, Gordon flees to his mother who tells him that he must follow his heart. The next day, the boy giraffes plan to teach Gordon a lesson, but their plan backfires, and Gordon must save them from plummeting down the waterfall. In the end, Gordon teaches the other boy giraffes that they should love everyone - even those who are different from themselves.

~*~*~
The whole book is illustrated like the cover. Simple, bold, just right. Just like other picture books, this one has large print words with few to a page. The thing is, two boys want to play a game that is usually played by a boy and a girl. The mother really steps up in the story with her unconditional love and great advice.

The print edition is coming soon and it would be a worthy addition to any children's library.

Pascal Durant, one of the best mountain riders in the cycling world, was about to finally win his first polka-dot jersey denoting him King of the Mountains in the Tour de France. Then he suffered a horrific accident that left him unable to complete the race. In his forties and fighting chronic injuries, he knows he only has one more shot at the top.

Laurent Desrochers, an internationally known reporter, hears about his dear friend’s crash and watches a moving viral video of Pascal, bloodied yet unbowed, congratulating the winner. When Pascal tells him he’s going to do the Tour one last time, Laurent decides to convince his network to let him follow Pascal on his quest.

Friends for a decade, they had never thought of the other as more. Pascal’s focus on his sport and poor taste in men has never produced a long-term relationship. And Laurent’s constant travel causes a rift between him and his fiancĂ© Jan that proves insurmountable.

Laurent finally realises his ideal partner has been in front of him all along. Can he pull Pascal’s focus from his goal long enough for him to know he’s being chased...and let Laurent catch him?

~*~*~
I love the way the authors were able to bring the excitement of race to the page. There were lots of interactions with team members as well as support personal. The story isn't drawn out or technical as it is fast as well as soul searching. Pascal does a lot of introspective thinking while waiting for the starting gun. The friendship of the two men is like your favorite sweatshirt. The slide into lovers as smooth as silk.

You know this is a happy-ever-after kind of book but the will he or won't he excitement is still there. And the ending of the book was perfect.

Evangeline Ames has rented a country cottage far from the London streets where she was recently attacked. Fascinated by the paranormal energy of nearby Crystal Gardens, she finds pleasure in sneaking past the wall to explore the grounds. And when her life is threatened again, she instinctively goes to the gardens for safety.

Lucas Sebastian has never been one to ignore a lady in danger, even if she is trespassing on his property. Quickly disposing of her would-be assassin, he insists they keep the matter private. There are rumors enough already, about treasure buried under his garden and occult botanical experiments performed by his uncle—who died of mysterious causes. With Evangeline’s skill for detection, and Lucas’s sense of the criminal mind, they soon discover that they have a common enemy. And as the energy emanating from Crystal Gardens intensifies, they realize that to survive they must unearth what has been buried for too long.

Running is a gift, but not only for the gifted. Whether you run just for fun or want to become a more competitive runner, The Gift of Running is for you. In The Gift of Running, P. Mark Taylor shows runners how to get started and stay motivated. The book includes: advice on how to get started as a runner, tried & true methods of running faster and longer, how to prepare for a marathon, tips on staying healthy & happy, motivation to keep you running, an insider view of the running community, & training programs for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, & marathon.

P. Mark Taylor is a runner & author of the blog at www.WiseRunning.com.

~*~*~
This is not really anything new and Mark acknowledges this himself. The thing is, instead of reading many books to find the information, Mark has gathered it in one place and added his personal experiences. One piece of info I found on my own by fluke, he mentions three times!

This really is a good starting point. Read it clear through like a novel then read it again with a highlighter or notepad handy!

There is lots of good advice, so much that I can't pick my favorite but I do have two. 1) Buy your first pair of running shoes at a running store. The employees are runners and they know what questions to ask you to help you get the best shoes for you. 2) It doesn't matter what you look like, how far you go, or how fast you are. . . that first "bouncy step" makes you a runner.

I love that he explains things so well, there are tips for your first marathon as well as your first steps out the door.

I actually paid full price for the kindle version and am pleased with my purchase.

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to have an extra hour in the evening to yourself and not have to worry about the dreaded question, "Hey Mom, what's for dinner?" then freezer cooking just might be for you. The "ABC'S of Freezer Cooking" covers all the basics to teach you how and how not to prepare freezer meals for your family. From cooking all your meals for a month in just one day, or preparing just a few extra meals for when you're family is particularly busy, this book is full of helpful tips and tricks to help you make it happen.

Included is how to write a meal plan, money saving strategies, 15 basic recipes, and there is even a section on how to utilize freezer cooking as a weight loss tool. If you're looking for a quick read, and an introduction into the world of make-ahead meals then this book is the perfect place to get started. Written with the beginning freezer cook in mind.

~*~*~
This was fun! She literally goes through the alphabet (Baked Goods, Food Safety, Ice Cream won't fit, Quick Cooking Tips) while explaining how she does freezer cooking. What works for her, what doesn't.

She even includes some of her families favorite recipes that freeze well. That's one of the main tips, if it doesn't freeze well, why use it?

I'm not sure how this will work with my family, she uses a lot of potatoes and I'm Diabetic but she gives me a good base to start. And the encouragement to start small. Sure having 30 different meals in my freezer would be great but just having an extra one or two is a good place to start.

Protecting the royal family is Linus Murati's job. So when the queen's younger sister is attacked, the devoted Lydian royal guardsman goes into action and saves her life. But this was no random occurrence. Danger has followed Julia Miller across the Atlantic from Seattle. Now Linus has two missions: to keep the maddeningly independent future duchess in his sights at all times, and to catch the culprit who threatens the woman whose trust—and love—he desires above all others.

~*~*~

"Rachelle McCalla writes books with kissing, praying, and dead bodies." How perfect is that?

This is the second series with the country of Lydia as the backdrop. The first was Reclaiming the Crown and now it is time to Protect it. This book had everything I'd expect from a book set in Lydia. Kidnapping, murder, cross continent flights plus kisses as well prayer. And of course, there was a happy ending. At least for now.

There was references to the first series to remind us of what went before but it was more of an explanation of why things are how they are now so I'm sure if you've read the others recently it won't be tiresome. On the other hand, it has been a while for me so the reminders were more of a "oh, yeah" reminder. I don't know how you'd do jumping in right here.

Ellery is a quiet town in the Smoky Mountains, at the base of Ellery Peak, where nothing ever happens. Max Harrison escaped from his firefighting job in the city to take up a role as assistant to the mayor, whilst also holding the position of a volunteer firefighter.

Finn Ryan is one of only three cops in the small town and it soon seems to Max that someone is out to hurt the sexy cop. Rescuing Finn from a burning precinct was the easy part—it’s keeping him alive after that that fireman Max Harrison finds difficult.

~*~*~

Max's first fire with his new job is the police station. He meets Finn when he goes in to save him.  Finn grew up in Ellery and has a regular Friday night with his friends and that's our introduction to half of the three couples in the series.

I was thinking it would be a quick, light hearted read but it wasn't. Yes there was humor but there were several places where my breath speed up or got caught in my throat.

I loved how the roots of being in the same small town kept popping up for Finn and the love and support he's shown.

Home is sweetest when it’s the one person you can’t live without.

Yancey MacCafferty and Juan Romanos fell in love when they were in their teens, but their families convinced them both to follow their dreams and explore the world before committing to each other.

Their dreams take them in different directions. Yancey heads off to veterinarian school while Juan goes east to ride show horses. They stay in touch, and see each other as often as they can, but slowly they begin to drift apart.

Until Yancey graduates from college and decides it’s time to claim Juan as his. He gets a job working at a clinic near where Juan trains and rides. They spend as much time together as their work allows, finding out that while they may still love each other, meshing their lives together will take a lot more work.

~*~*~
I was really worried that one of the riders would come between them. I didn't think Scout would back down once he decided he wanted Juan. Even knowing about Yancey, he comes on strong.

Yancey has finished school and is now in practice near where Juan trains and rides "show horses". What they don't tell you is that Juan rides 1,000+ pound stubborn animals really fast over 5 foot or higher fences. At least these fences come down when hit.

You might cry on this one. That's all I'm going to say.

Fairy Tale
source: Public Library

Amelia, the fourth sister in a line of princesses, is sure her red hair and non-princessy ways–not to mention being the last-born–will mean an easy life of never being queen. But when an ancient curse comes to life, an evil uncle tries to take over their peaceful kingdom, and her three sisters are turned into a tree and two swans, Amelia and her best friend Henry must gather the forces of her magically blessed family, and save Gosling from complete destruction.

~*~*~

This is a fairy tale and as such is scary even if it is a middle school age book.

There is a Princess (four actually), a villain, several good-guys-can't-lead people. A plague takes out the King and Queen, the eldest Princess isn't 18 so the uncle comes to rule for something like six weeks but tricks three of the sisters into giving him the kingdom. This works because he doesn't know about the fourth and when he finds out about her, he tells the people she is dead.

Wow. There were several times I had to put the book down and read something light-hearted. Friends show up unexpectedly but so do enemies!

. . . back to reading

sigh. Bring tissues.

Teamwork. Belief in oneself and in others'. Even one who feels ordinary can be or do something extraordinary.

Good will prevail. . .

and evil will get what is coming to them.

Ransom’s new policy works well until he comes into the office one day and sees Parrish Rutledge, his new executive secretary. Ransom finds Parrish extremely attractive but fights his feelings. If he takes Parrish as a lover, he'll have to fire him.

Parrish has been alone since he was sixteen, having been tossed out by his older brother. He dreams of his boss but knows nothing can ever come of it. Then an office party becomes their undoing and they give in to their passion. As expected, Ransom offers Parrish a choice: stay and ignore what happened or leave the job and return to college. Neither option is even remotely appealing. If only Parrish could persuade Ransom there's a third possibility….

~*~*~
I loved the interaction between the main characters and the peaks into office politics, policies and relationships.

Romance, paranormal (magic), contemporary

Originally from the ancient mythical island of Atlantis, Nicholas has spent the last year deep in the mountains of Maine, serving as Director of Security for the Nova Mare and Inglenook resorts. Fully embracing his life in the twenty-first century, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to a trouble-prone employee, and is determined to keep her safe.

The last thing Julia Campbell needs is a man with a hero complex, especially one as handsome and imposing as Nicholas. All she has to do is keep it together until her younger sister turns eighteen, and then she can focus on her own life. But strange things have been happening at the resort—and it’s Nicholas who keeps coming to her rescue. When Nicholas is suddenly the one in trouble, Julia realizes he’s not quite what he seems—and that she’ll do anything to help the man who’s stolen her heart…
~*~*~
This is book four and there were hints of book five so I've got my fingers crossed! Is it necessary for you to read the first three? No. You'll understand relationships better and some events but you could pick up this book and fall in love with Spellbound Falls.

This is a romance with magic. Not just the true love kind but move mountains and travel through time kind of magic. Our male lead is a warrior from another time, now head of security at Nova Mare Resort. You'd think he'd be bored but there are plenty of time travelers willing to spend the big bucks to stay at the 5-star resort and some of them don't pay attention to modern ideas. Like, your son can't lure a local girl into the woods without consequences ideas. This a a small part of a perfectly lovely story and illustrated to our female lead, and her brother, what he thought of them. (It turned out to be a good thing).

Julia is just trying to make enough money to live a comfortable life, pay for her sisters education, and hopefully save her brothers from following their dad's footsteps of not only being abusive but also the town drunk. Maine women are tough and independent and Julia has eyes that remind Nicholas of a cat.

Most of the book is a about a hunky-could-have-anyone guy and a girl who's been-crushed-so-doesn't-see-she's-wonderful. The miscommunication, stress and worry that can happen at the beginning, just with a little twist such as several character being from the ancient mythical island of Atlantis.

male/male romance

For TJ Delaney and Cole Labelle, it’s time to turn their lives around and get real.

TJ needs to exchange his playboy lifestyle for a job and prove he’s a responsible adult rather than a spoiled, rich brat.

Cole needs to free himself of his family’s control and their paranoid fears by proving being gay like his father is the only thing he and the man who gave him life have in common. And that by being openly gay he won’t cause them public embarrassment as his father did.

Can TJ and Cole achieve their goal of "getting real" and also find love in the process?

~*~*~
Short, quick, fun read. TJ's Dad gives him an ultimatum and now he's left with no wheels, allowance, or credit cards. Sure he can still live at home and keep his cell phone but he has no marketable skills! Or does he?

I loved Cole and his willingness to be manipulated by his family. I wanted to jump for joy at his solution.

male/male romance, 1st in a series
source: private library

It’ll take hard work for Carlos, Troy and Will to turn the Mossy Glenn Ranch into the successful business it used to be, and even more challenging will be making the place their home.

Carlos, Troy and Will met in Where There’s a Will. They found each other and a love not many people could imagine. It worked for them, and they’ve been handed a chance at a new life and a home of their own.

The Mossy Glenn Ranch, owned by three siblings, Nick, Rory, and Annabelle, used to be flush with success. Then the previous owners destroyed almost everything, selling their heritage right out from under the three.

They bought part of it back, and asked Carlos and his partners to make the place successful again. It’s a chance he grabs with both hands once his guys agree, but there are challenges for all of them, and Will’s desire to make the place specifically LGBT-employee friendly and safe may cause more trouble than they already find when the get to their new home.

From a situation in town that reminds Will all too much of his own abusive past, to the surprising support of many of the townsfolk, the trio find themselves facing new challenges and reaching for the love and support that grows stronger between them.

~*~*~
We've meet Carlos, Troy and Will in another series. It isn't necessary to have read the other series to enjoy this one, it only give a little background on how the three guys met. Plus, they were only supporting characters in one of the books. I'm happy to see they have their own series.

This felt real. Small-town at it's best and worst. I am disappointed in the length, not long enough! Most of the questions are answered, leaving us with a satisfying read and a little cliffhanger.

Spotlight on ... 6 Ways Video Games Can Improve Your Life

6 Ways Video Games Can Improve Your Life

I received a fascinating book but real-life has interferred in my reading life! I posted a Spotlight to tell you about the book but this is something all together different. I love #4 :-) and while they can also isolate, I too love video games, I just don't do them enough.

The Holder's Dominion
by Genese Davis

Release Date: March 1, 2013
ISBN: 978-1-59298-580-7

~*~*~*~

How many times have you heard a woman say that she is sick and tired of her husband or boyfriend playing video games? Genese Davis has a healthy solution to that problem. Join him!

Genese Davis is a gamer. She's also a writer, a pilot, a horseback riding instructor, an athlete, a model and a manager in a financial organization. In other words, she is a highly accomplished, well-rounded woman. She also loves video games.

Genese Davis' debut novel The Holder's Dominion (Beaver's Pond Press, March 2013) explores the world of video games from an outsider's perspective. She has been working in the world of video games for the past few years and has started the online movement, The Gamer in You. More information on Genese can be found at her website.

 1) Life Skills Acquired Through Video Games
Video games improve comfort level with professional and social expectations. They require strategy skills, team leadership, problem solving, quick decision-making, delegating responsibility and raising awareness. Building these skills in games can be easily transferred into professional life. Work skills will be enhanced, confidence will grow and leadership skills will develop.

2) Video Games Build Confidence
In video games, the player is the hero. Women must learn to be the hero of their lives. So often, women relinquish this role or downplay their successes. Storylines in video games empower women to believe in themselves and give direct and immediate feedback, i.e., "We couldn't have won without you," and "Thank you so much, you saved us!" As simple as this sounds, this positive reinforcement can do wonders for your confidence.

3) Video Games Benefit Relationships (Shocking but True!)
Healthy and content relationships blossom when both partners take a proactive interest in each other's lifestyle. Even if video games are not your "cup of tea" right now, give one a try. You may be surprised how many positive and artistic attributes are uncovered. Video games offer couples a hobby to explore together. Time playing a video game together is time well spent. Couples can bond while playing video games because they are interacting on new micro and macro levels. Communication improves when playing video games together much more than when watching television or movies. Video games require adaptation and quick decision-making. Video games will constantly challenge the player and can significantly improve brain function.

4) Video Games are NOT Just For Men
When we hear the term "video game players," people often think of a throng of children, or a group of men. However, the average age of every video game player is thirty-three. Video games are an important form of entertainment for all ages. In fact, video games offer crucial validation for women and men.

5) Video Games Enhance Social Behavior
Video games are a way for women to discover new perspectives, meet new people, hear new theories, and discuss new topics.

6) Video Games Are Healthy
All humans need time to unwind. When we relax, our minds have the chance to process our daily stress and to rejuvenate. Additionally, more and more video games are being created for overall health and wellness Video games give people the means to enhance their lives.

A 2011 study conducted by scientists at Brigham and Young proved that video game exercise can help achieve physical wellness. Active video games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Boxing allow players to experience enough exercise to meet recommendations for physical health. Georgetown University researchers conducted a separate study on overweight teenagers in Washington, D.C., using the Wii version of Sports Active. They found that children who played various games felt better about themselves, lost weight and developed increased focus necessary for academic achievement.
