I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Wrap-up: Genre/Sub-Genre

Genre/Sub-Genre

Reading Challenge

Wrap up
2013
Two. Two books shy of completing this! What was I thinking? I only had to read two books!

Granted, one was horror, not my favorite genre but I'd already read two, surely one more could be found.

list of what I read can be found here.

Read 52 Books in 52 Weeks Reading Challenge Wrap-up

52 in 52
Reading Challenge
2013

Hosted by Robin of My Two Blessings
at Read 52 Books in 52 Weeks.

I need to pay more attention to what I'm reading. . . or at least take notes!

~ End of Year Wrap-up ~

1. How many books did you read and did you meet or beat your own personal goal?
~ I've read 155 books over 100 pages with a total number of isbn read: 256. I was hoping to read 200 books over 50 pages (no picture books) so I'm not sure I met my goal or not.

2. What are your top 5 (or more) favorite stories? Top 5 least favorites?
~ The problem with reading that many books/pages, you don't always remember specific ones. That being said, A Soldier's Choice by D. L. Warner was read twice this year and last. also read last year, two of the Harper Hall books (Dragonsinger, Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey) was read this year and last also but only one time. I also liked The Extra-Ordinary Princess by Carolyn Q. Ebbitt more than I thought I would.

As for least favorite . . . several that I didn't finish but only one stands out. Nothing to Lose by Lee Child

3. One book you thought you would never read and was pleasantly surprised you liked it?
~

4. Most thrilling unputdownable book?
~  Subterranean by James Rollins and most of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child

5. Did you come across a story that you enjoyed it so much, you turned around and read it again or plan on rereading it again in 2014?
~

6. One book you thought you would love, but didn't?
~ Nothing to Lose by Lee Child. This was book 12 in a series I was loving but I thought Reacher was doing something so stupid I couldn't finish the book.

7. Which book or books had the greatest impact on you this year?
~

8. Do you have a favorite cover or quote from a story you'd like to share?
~

9. What book would you recommend everyone read?
~

10. What was your most favorite part of the challenge? Did you do any of the mini challenges?
~ checking out what everyone else is reading. It encourages me to write more reviews. I did the A to Z challenge (completed), Book Buying Ban (failed), Dusty (12 out of 12), Chunky (3 out of 4).

Fall into Reading Wrap-Up

Fall into Reading
2013

hosted by Sandra at The Musings of a Book Addict
filling in for Katrina at Callapidder Days

My kick-off post and a progress post. And how have I done since? Not well.

I've been spending a lot of time reading serials online and they don't have an isbn as well as crocheting and watching TV/movies :-(

Original Goals
2 review books
2 library books
2 TBR books (pre-2013) - from the pile, not the list
2 non-fiction
2 challenge specific books
2 new purchases (I'd like these to be over 100 pages)
2 from the stack next to my chair
2 "up next"

Final Outcome
review - Candy and the Cankersaur by Jason Sandberg
review -
library - One Shot by Lee Child
library - The Hard Way by Lee Child
TBR - City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
TBR - The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
non-fiction -
non-fiction -
challenge specific -  Quinn's Hart by Cassandra Gold
challenge specific -  The Arrangement by Mary Balogh
new purchase - Christmas on 4th Street by Susan Mallery
new purchase - Mistletoe Cowboy by Carolyn Brown
from stack -
from stack -
up next -
up next -

Not that I've only been reading online, I did hit 12,664 pages after all, I just didn't read enough to meet my goals. Next time I won't do such specific goals. . . if I can remember!

What do You Mean 2013 Is Almost Over?

I'm not finished with my reading challenges yet! In fact, I recently posted one you could join (Chill Baby, Chill) for winter that hasn't started yet.

Actually, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to complete all the reading challenges I sign up for each year. I've given up being practical and usually just go for the highest possible choice. ;-)

I am wondering just how many books I have left to complete all the challenges I signed up for.

If you've seen my challenge page (here) you know how many I've joined.

Completed: 22 PLUS Reading Challenge Addict
failed: 4
gave up on at least one

Only need one more:
Chunky (500+ pages)
Nerdy Non-Fiction
Clean Out Your eReader (by 11-30 with review)

Only need two more:
Nightwalkers
Non-Fiction Adventure (multi-year, can catch up later)
101 Fantasy Project (multi-year, can catch up later)

Only need three more:
Cruisin' thru the Cozies
Paranormal
Genre/Sub-Genre (I'm hosting!)

and to finish off the possibles . . .
Need 4 eBooks
Need 4 Romantic Suspense (two by my reading chair - both print)
Need 7 library books (I'm hosting this one too!)

Back to the original question. How many to finish all the challenges (not counting for overlap which is totally going to happen) . . . 256.

Whoa! Even taking out the two most obvious overlap challenges, I need 175. NOT going to happen.

How many do I need to be within the realm of realism? 11

7 library books (also Genre/Sub-Genre, maybe paranormal)
4 ebooks (clean out your ereader, ebooks)

Now that I've been overwhelmed as I stand here looking at the realm of realisim . . . how are you doing?

~Progress~

Paranormal (Fey): Hidden Passions by Emma Holly

Introductory Questionnaire

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon
Introductory Questionnaire

Hour 1

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
. . . Southern California. I'm in Los Angeles County but am closer to Orange County than I am Hollywood so I don't see movie stars or famous people. I can spend Monday at the beach and Tuesday in the mountains and sleep in my own bed each night.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
. . . The Owl Keeper by Chris Brodien-Jones but the book I pulled out first was Ready to Wear by Chloe Taylor because I thought it would be a quick read before bed.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
. . . I have homemade cookies and veggies. Which do you think I'm most looking forward too :D

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
. . . SAHM of adult children and two cats. I love reading, dislike housework and have a love/hate relationship with the gym. I'm a runner - slow as cold molasses going uphill but still a runner. I'm Christian. A quiet gay-rights supporter. Politically I'm too liberal to be a conservative and too conservative to be a liberal. I'm quietly going about my days, with my nose in a book. I'm hard of hearing so you may have to touch my shoulder or wave your hand in front of me to get my attention.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
. . . I'll be sleeping. I always try to stay up and end up sleeping anyways so this time I planned my "nap" better.

I almost missed this!

Wonderfully Wicked
Read-a-Thon
October 11 - 20

hosted by April and Pabkins at My Shelf Confessions

sign-ups and info, here

The Wonderfully Wicked Read-A-Thon is a time when we all get together to dedicate the days of October 11-20 to as much reading as possible. You read as much as you can in order to get yourself a little further through that huge to-read pile! We know real life gets in the way and even if you can’t participate more than one day, you’re welcome to join in on the fun!

In the meanwhile, we will be hosting book-related challenges where you can win some awesome prizes and have a Twitter party at the hashtag #WWReadathon! You can posts updates on your blog, Twitter, Goodreads or Facebook — as long as the profile is public and we all can enjoy your reading progress!

I'm just going to continue to work on my list for Dewey's RaT and R.I.P. I have three books coming next week and I added six new ebooks to my reader so it isn't like I don't have anything to read. The problem is too much!

A Timely Challenge!

Better Late Than Never
ARC Challenge

Oct 1 - Dec 31

Hosted by The Windy Pages, Nite Lite Book Reviews and The Reader's Antidote

Sign ups and more information, here

Does looking at your ARC pile stress you out? Do you suffer from NetGalley Guilt? Have you gotten so behind in your ARC reading that older ARCs have gotten pushed aside? Well then this challenge is for you.

The rules are simple.
  • Read as many older review books as you can, making way for the new year and new books!
  • Books may be physical ARCs or digital ARCs.
  • For book to qualify, release date must be at older than 6 months (release date earlier than May 1, 2013)
  • Please do a wrap up post at the end of each month so we can check your progress.
  • And if you are participating, there will most likely be a chance at a prize at the end so keep a look out!

I don't know if I want to tell you how many books I have that are that old! I've got two print and four ebooks that are newish and they also need to be reviewed before the end of the year. I think I'll just list as I go. . . (unless I get upstairs to my shelf)

Time for a Frightfall Reading experience

It's a read-a-thon so you know I'd be there :-) I'm thankful to Melissa for posting her starting line, I was almost last to the party!

Official Time
Monday, September 30 at 12:00am EST
thru
Sunday, October 6 at 11:59pm EST

for me? Sunday, 9 p.m. to Sunday 8:59 p.m.

I missed the sign-up post so when you're ready to start reading, head to the starting line post and sign-up. We want to know what you're reading!

Read-a-Thon Twitter: #FrightFall
Me: @bookdragonslair

This is a week long fest of scary reading (well, at least one scary book anyway).  All you have to do to participate is read at least one horror/scary book.  For the faint-hearted among you, it can be a spooky mystery, a scary thriller, or something classically gothic.  Children's books are also allowed. It's not so much about the quantity of our reading, but the quality, right? But...if this read-a-thon helps you to mark a bunch of books off your TBR pile, so be it! No mini-challenges but there will be a big giveaway at the end.  And we will have a few scheduled Twitter chats again.

Here's the Twitter chat schedule:
  • Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00pm CST
  • Friday from 9:00 to 10:00pm CST
  • Saturday from 9:00 to 10:00pm CST
  • Sunday from 1:00 to 2:00pm CST
Dang it, I was reading last night! Let's see if I can remember. . . yes!

Books I'd like to read this week
Last Wool and Testament by Molly MacRae (started before RaT)
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
The Hiding Place by David Bell (this will be my scary book)
Werewolf in the North Woods by Vicki Lewis Thompson
The Arrangement by Mary Balogh
What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries

okay, that's a good starting point

I Love eBooks! part three

eBook
Reading Challenge
2013

hosted at Workaday Reads, Sign- up here

The 2013 Ebook Challenge. Encouraging readers to expand past just physical books to embrace ebooks in all forms, whether on Kindle, Kobo, computer, or any other reader.

Challenge Guidelines:
  • This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2013 – Dec 31, 2013.
  • Anyone can join, you don’t need to be a blogger. If you don’t have a blog, feel free to sign-up in the comments. You can post reviews to any book site (i.e. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, Goodreads, etc).
  • Any genre or length of book counts, as long as it is in ebook format.
  • You can plan your books in advance or as you read them.
  • When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the E-Book Reading Challenge.
  • You can move up levels, but no moving down.
  • Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2013, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.

Levels:
  • Floppy disk – 5 ebooks
  • CD – 10 ebooks
  • DVD – 25 ebooks
  • Memory stick – 50 ebooks
  • Hard drive – 75 ebooks
  • Server – 100 ebooks
  • Human brain – 150 ebooks

I think this is the only ebook challenge out there and as "any length" counts, I'm going to go for ... Human Brain ... and read 150 ebooks this year. Thank Heavens for "challenge overlap"!
