The idea is to read outside your comfort zone. Each month has a genre assigned to it, sub-genres count. To stretch yourself even more, read a level you don't usually read. Always read adult books? Go for a middle grade book!

Granted, one was horror, not my favorite genre but I'd already read two, surely one more could be found.

The challenge is to read a large variety of genres within one year.

Other Important Info:

• Runs from January 1st 2013 until December 31st 2013. Sign ups will be open until December 1st 2013.
• There are five levels to challenge yourself too. You may move up a level but not go down a level. These are all outlined below. Please mention in your sign up post which level you will aim for.
• The genres you choose to read are up to you. As long as every book is different, whichever genre you wish to read you can.
• Every month there will be a post on this blog to link up to your update post / review(s)
• There will be a giveaway at the end of the challenge, and maybe a few within the year but these are TBD.
• To sign up, you will need to write a post saying which level you are challenging yourself too and then use the linky list. Non-Bloggers may post in the comments of this post.
• Any book formats are accepted.
• Novellas and Novels are all accepted for this challenge.
• YA, NA and Adult books all count towards this challenge.
• New sub-genres are accepted. (for example, paranormal-romance, or historical-romance)

Levels:

• Careful: 6 different genres, 6 books
• Cautious: 12 different genres, 12 books
• Branching: 18 different genres, 18 books
• Avid Reader: 24 different genres, 24 books
• Champion: 30 different genres, 30 books

I'm going for Careful and will read 6 books of different genres. Crossing my fingers that I go up a level.

I always thought that I read "almost everything" but even after several years of blogging, reviews, and challenges I realized that I still limit myself when it comes to the sub-genres. Of course, I can't just read more sub-genres....I've got to make a challenge out it! ;-)

This is not how I usually think of them but this is how Writer's Digest has broken them down. Check out the sub-genres descriptions and it will make sense.

another challenge?

Samantha at Bookworms and tea lovers is hosting a challenge I'm thinking about joining.

The goal:

To read one book in the following genres: crime fiction, detective fiction, mystery fiction, horror fiction, thriller fiction, romance fiction, science fiction, action/adventure fiction, fantasy fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, and western fiction.

The challenge started in November 2008 so I'm a little late but I was wondering if I've read each of these....

She's given us three levels: read one book from each, delete the one you read the most & the one of your choosing, delete the one you read most. There is a link with specific descriptions.

All are fiction (dang, After Etan won't count):
crime:
detective: The Cat Who Went into the Closet reviewed
mystery: Dashing through the Snow reviewed
horror: The Summoning reviewed
thriller: A Circle of Souls
romance: Dogs and Goddesses reviewed
science fiction: Heartmate
action/adventure: The Spy Who Came for Christmas
fantasy: A Book Dragon
realistic: The Accidental Mother
historical: It's In His Kiss (historical romance) sniff, sniff
western: The Man from Nowhere


Oh My! I've only got two genres to read! I wonder if I can before the end of November....maybe not, she wants them reviewed!

IF, and I do mean IF, I do this, I'll choose level A

A: Read 10 books, drop the genre you read the most and one of your own choosing.

I'd drop Historical because of all the historical romance I read. It's a toss up as to which of the other two I'd drop, depend on what book looks good. I'm not reading Carrie or Cujo nor do I want the book to be from the murder's point of view. ummm, I'm sure there will be something I can read. Is there such a think a "light" horror?

The rules

You may not read more than 1 book per genre

All books must be read within the challenge period

No crossovers within the challenge, each genre should have a separate book

Crossovers with other challenges are allowed

Audio books are allowed, graphic novels are not

You may make a list of books, but that’s not mandatory and you can change your picks at any time before or during the challenge
