I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Published: October, 2014
genre: picture book
48 pages
age level: 4-8

Description:

It all started at the carnival...That’s where Joey makes a new friend: a bright yellow balloon. Joey and his beloved balloon do everything together, until the balloon accidentally slips off Joey’s wrist and flies far, far away. What will Joey do without his special friend?

Tiffany Papageorge has crafted a poignant tale of love, loss, and letting go that will serve as a comforting guide to children who are navigating the complicated emotions of grief. Rich, luminous illustrations by Erwin Madrid perfectly capture these timeless themes, making them accessible to even the youngest reader.

Honest, unflinching, and ultimately reassuring, My Yellow Balloon will resonate with anyone who has endured the darkness of grief, while offering hope for brighter days ahead.

Thankfully Reading Weekend

Thankfully Reading Weekend
November 27 - 30

hosted at Jenn's Bookshelves
for more information and to sign up, click here

Twitter: #thankfulreading

Basically, avoid the craziness of Black Friday and spend some quite time reading. It would be nice if you stopped by the others reading.

I'll be spending Thursday at my Sister-in-Laws with most of my husband's siblings and their kids. I don't ever remember going shopping on Black Friday as I prefer Cyber Monday ;-) and as our shopping list grows smaller we can usually get it finished before Thanksgiving rolls around!

Basically, "get your comfortable reading spot, a nice warm blanket, a cozy mystery or two, and join me for Cozy Mystery Week!"

What perfect timing! I was going through 2014 reading challenges and discovered that I've read NO cozy mysteries this year. gasp! Maybe I can get a couple read in between my Christmas reads.

List of Possible Books to Choose From
  1. Our First Christmas anthology (already read one of the four stories)
  2. 'Tis the Season by Robyn Carr - three reprints
  3. The Trouble with Christmas by Debbie Mason
  4. Take Me Home for Christmas by Brenda Novak - a Whiskey Creek novel

  10. The Christmas Cat by Melody Carlson
  11. Innocence by Dean Koontz (winter setting)
  12. By Winter's Light by Stephanie Laurens (is it here?, yes, started it right away)
Twelve? No way! I'm not going to be able to read all of these even if I didn't have vacations!

Progress
  • Nov 6: I'm still on vacation and don't have plans to do any reading that counts ;-) . . . I was wrong! I started Twin Threat Christmas by Rachelle McCalla yesterday but was able to finish today! Also read some of Plaid Tidings by Mia Watts but started it earlier - it isn't on the list. :-(
  • Nov 7: traveling home but it will be a short trip from pier to house . . . wow, I'm so sleepy! Serves me right for staying up to finish my book when I knew how early I needed to be awake. Short nap, dinner out, a stop at the grocery store and other things needed to do after a return then, finally, reading! Started 'Tis the Season and finished one of the short stories.
  • Nov 8: Read the next story in 'Tis the Season, only one more to go but Personal by Lee Child and household chores had a stronger pull.
  • Nov 9: Finished 'Tis the Season, started The Christmas Cat
  • Nov 10: Finished The Christmas Cat, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D - season 1 :-)
  • Nov 11: read more Personal by Lee Child and started another short story in Our First Christmas
Final Report
Twin Threat Christmas by Rachelle McCalla
'Tis the Season by Robyn Carr
The Christmas Cat by Melody Carlson

Description:

In the predominantly Mormon city of Draper, Utah, some seemingly perfect families have deadly secrets.

Linda Wallheim is a devout Mormon, the mother of five boys and the wife of a bishop. But Linda is increasingly troubled by her church’s structure and secrecy, especially as a disturbing situation takes shape in her ward. One cold winter night, a young wife and mother named Carrie Helm disappears, leaving behind everything she owns. Carrie’s husband, Jared, claims his wife has always been unstable and that she has abandoned the family, but Linda doesn’t trust him. As Linda snoops in the Helm family’s circumstances, she becomes convinced that Jared has murdered his wife and painted himself as a wronged husband.

Linda’s husband asks her not to get involved in the unfolding family saga. But Linda has become obsessed with Carrie’s fate, and with the well-being of her vulnerable young daughter. She cannot let the matter rest until she finds out the truth. Is she wrong to go against her husband, the bishop, when her inner convictions are so strong?

eBooks, part 7

eBook Reading Challenge
2014

hosted at Workaday Reads

For more information and to sign up, click here

Basic Requirements: Any length, any genre but only ebooks count for this one. There are seven levels to choose from. I chose "Human Brain" last year (2013) and made it in November. I'm hoping to read more from my print tbr shelf so I'm not doing that again. I'm going for . . . Server . . . and hope to read 100 ebooks during 2014. I can always move up a level :-)

Moving up a level to . . . Human Brain . . . because it looks like I'll be reading more than 150 ebooks during 2014. . . . book #151 finished on June 4, now I'm just keeping track of titles.

Hosted by Kimba from The Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Jennifer from BookShelfery

for more information and to sign up, click here

So break out the cocoa, the coffee, and cookies! Grab those holiday theme books and bring your holiday spirit. Prepare to enter challenges, win prizes, meet new friends and Twitter chat with us. You can join for a day or sit by the fire and hang out every day. The more you participate the more entries you will earn for the Participant Giveaway.

We love holiday themed reads from the covers to the warm & fuzzy tales on the inside. For this read-a-thon you must read holiday themed or winter setting reads. For bloggers, we have spoken to most of the main publishing houses and for ARCS of holiday books released in Sept/Oct, they are fine with you posting a review in November and December since that is when folks look to buy them. Below are the rules. Read them, grab the button and link up. For our non-blogger friends you can join too. Just link your Goodreads, Tumblr or Facebook account.

I can read holiday books all year and I do have a few new ones on my tbr pile. I've got to gather them for a picture but I've got a little time. I'll be on vacation for most of the RaT and will need to plan my goals accordingly. I hope to be able to read at least one. The problem will be waiting once I have them gathered!

Waiting for one more book before I post the picture/list my stack and yes, I've started one them ;-)
I'll be on vacation for the first two days, doing laundry/recovery when I get home but I'll also be getting to go away again so I'm hoping I can get two read!

Spotlight on: The Sixteen by Ali B.

Title: The Sixteen
Author: Ali B.
Series: Soul Jumpers

ISBN: 978-0988942219
Publisher: Dewey Larson Publishing LLC
Date: July 2014
206 pages
Middle Grade Fiction

Back of book:
What if you find yourself on the verge of death and your soul is not ready to die?

Iris Brave agrees to be the pawn in a risky scheme to free her father from his ruthless captors. In doing so, Iris jeopardizes her own freedom. She's a long way from home and is surrounded by people who she knows are not what they seem. Who can she trust when one mistake could cost her everything?

About the series:
There are people out there who don't die with their bodies. Their souls live on in the bodies of others. Some good, some bad-they are soul jumpers.

Nothing in Iris Brave's world makes sense anymore. Her father, Micah, is still alive-his soul survives in the body of a teenage boy.

It is up to Iris and a rogue group of soul jumpers called the Sixteen to save Micah. To do so Iris must take on the unscrupulous leaders of the Council. Can she save her father? Will she survive? Who can she trust when one mistake could cost her everything?

Scared and running out of hope, Iris doesn't know what her next move should be but she knows she must act to save the people she loves. A long way from home and surrounded by people who she knows are not what they seem, Iris jeopardizes her own freedom. Her brave rescue forces her on the run and changes her into someone she could¹ve never imagined.

In the Soul Jumpers Series, Ali B. shares the message that we are more than the body we live in, everyone can be brave and while there is evil in the world, there is also infinite good.

Read-a-Thon! Good Coffee/Good Books

Drink good Coffee
Read good Books a-thon

hosted at Must Read Faster

to sign up, click here

So I am slowly falling behind on my TBR stack, and well...that's never a good thing. (Doesn't help I keep BUYING new books, but anyhoodle!) So what's a gal to do? Well if you are a nerdlette like me, you make your own freaking read-a-thon!

So what if you do it by yourself! You gotta warm up your eye holes for the October thon anyways!

So starting now (3pm CST) until Midnight (ish) on Sunday, I will be risking my eye sight to cut down my TBR stack! Reading and drinking insane amounts of caffeine and nerding out! You CAN read with me, or you can just point and laugh as I slowly slip into a reading/caffeine induced insanity! Your call!

I found out too late to start on the 26th but I've still got a couple of days! My tbr pile is huge but so is my review pile and the stack of books from the library I'm going to try for two books and see if I can get both of them read.

1. The Sixteen by Ali B.
2. Cover Your Eyes by Mary Burton
3. Nightmares Can Be Murder by Mary Kennedy  (yes it's new but it got buried!)

Starting: 5:15 am PDT

Book 1:

FAIL mostly

I did get a spotlight post up so you know what The Sixteen is about. Should have done that with the others too.

I did get lots of reading in but it was on an online serial, no isbn, no count :-(

I hope Melissa decides to do this again.
