I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

My first time with this challenge was 2009 then I missed 2010. I've done fairly well since then but there are several books that were on my list to read that still aren't read!

Carl has so much to say, and says it so well that you really need to read his whole post to appreciate just how fantastic he is.

Art used for the banners this year are the property of Abigail Larson, check out her shop for other products

(click the title, I haven't figured out why the read more link isn't showing up yet)

When do I begin?
September 1st is right around the corner. It is time to begin.

actually, any book started when Carl posted (Aug 29) may count

What can I read?
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above.

There are two rules:
1. Have fun reading (and watching).
2. Share that fun with others.

There are several levels:

Peril the First
Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature.

Peril the Second
Read two books of any length that you believe fit within the R.I.P. categories.

Peril the Third or, the One Book Only option
We all want you to participate. This Peril involves imbibing just one R.I.P.ping read.

Peril of the Short Story
I am a big fan of short stories and my desire for them is perhaps no greater than in Autumn.

Peril on the Screen
This is for those of us that like to watch suitably scary, eerie, mysterious gothic fare during this time of year. It may be something on the small screen or large. It might be a television show, like Dark Shadows or Midsomer Murders, or your favorite film.

Peril of the Group Read
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The read-a-long will be hosted at The Estella Society.

I'm going for . . .
 AND

I don't have titles to pick from yet, other than the group read, so I'll be back later with that.  edited to add "Books to Read" and list

~ Books to Read ~
Cover Your Eyes by Mary Burton
In Mint Condition - 2013 (short stories)
he House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne (Gothic September Read-a-Long)
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

~ Books Read ~

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson - yes, it's picture book but there is a witch, a fire-breathing dragon and a "tall, dark, and sticky" monster that "dripped and it squelched as it strode from the ditch"

I LOVE this challenge! I look forward to it every year. Hope you get some good reading in. And don't forget about FrightFall at the end of September. :)

Wonderful to have you back again. Wild to think that it is September already. I don't know that I've had a year go this quickly, ever.
