I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Magic Strikes

Someone's blog had a post about the author having way too many copies and they'd send it out to 200 bloggers for review. Thank you!

My thoughts
This is book three and I didn't read the first two. When Magic Strikes was first sent to me to review, I almost read the first two but wondered if I could enjoy the book without knowing what went before. Answer? Yes.

I had trouble at the beginning. This alternate Atlanta is strange. Magic coming in waves desrupting technology. Werewolves fine but wererats? It soon passed and I wanted to crawl into the book. I wanted to be Kate. Tough, beautiful, resourceful, deadly. Not just dangerous, Kate is a mercenary and extremely deadly. I'll need to go back and read the first two books to find out why a mercenary is working for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid but I didn't feel lost. I love that the story hangs but still ended. (how would be a spoiler)

The writing is detailed and picturesque. The characters well-developed and sometimes scary. I look forward to reading more from this fantastic author.

On a side note: I read Silent Blade, from Samhain Publishing. It is also available on the Kindle.
