I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

DeClutter Challenge Week 3

The 3rd Annual
91 Day DeClutter Challenge

Hosted at Mary Organizes
details here

Third Week: Bathrooms

We have two and a half bathrooms, one of which is the master. The half bath has recently been remodeled as much as we had money for. The last bath is the hall bath upstairs. It is used by the other three bedrooms upstairs. There was a plumbing leak and the pressure to this shower is horrible so the shower/tub is mostly unused. We'll be remodeling it soon ~throws confetti~.

dang it, now I have to sweep/vacuum again!

Before Pictures
I'm standing just outside the door, looking at the cabinet and flooring
Counter top. Why yes, that is a tree behind the toilet

Yes, that's supposed to be a rainbow. The paint colors I wanted were TOO expensive

There has been carpet in this bath for as long as we've owned the house (our bath too) so the flooring is extra yucky/dirty. We'll be talking to a designer about what we can do with the money we have. So far, I know two things. We'll be getting a white tub, not a beige one, and the toilet stays (for now).

DeClutter Challenge Week 2

The 3rd Annual
91 Day DeClutter Challenge

Hosted at Mary Organizes
details here

Second stop: Master Bath & Closet

There are no before pictures, it was way more embarrassing than the bedroom. I'm playing ostrich on this one although I did donate 3 hangers, 5 belts, a pair of pants, 1 dress, 1 t-shirt and 2 sweat shirts. I also "found" the shirt I'm wore to dinner Thursday.

March 20: I have worked some in the closet and got rid of ten more top but haven't gone through the dresses again. I also opened one of the boxes and recycled 24 papers, catalogs. I also cleared off the couch where I sit. Found a bill and four magazines I hadn't read yet plus a library book I need to return.

DeClutter Challenge Week 1 (picture heavy and very personal - and embarrassing)

The 3rd Annual
91 Day DeClutter Challenge

Hosted at Mary Organizes
details here

First stop: Master Bedroom

I got pictures taken (very embarrassing!) on Monday and tossed, donated, or put away 40 pieces. I didn't think to take a picture of the drawers under the bed. There are six on each side. I regularly use two of them. There are four drawers under the television.

I brought the paint cans (behind door) to the kitchen for disposal :-) That makes 44 things today. I also put away the clean laundry in the basket ;-)

Your Week #1: Master Bedroom Assignments
  • Monday – Drawers
  • Tuesday – Shelves
  • Wednesday – Nightstands
  • Thursday – Media & Electronics
  • Friday – Surfaces
  • Saturday – Floor
  • Sunday – Take a day of rest! Look out for the next assignment post on the blog, and make plans for your next week.

Before Pictures
directly across from door (bathroom door to left, bed to right)
behind door (workout/delicate laundry and paint cans) this may be the easiest part

rest of the window wall, unmade bed and boxes plus in front of the bed and a stack in the corner
looking down the wall from the door, this is the side my husband sleeps on. He can get to all his drawers

This is to the left of the door, TV and laundry, door into bath area

Sentimental clutter - found and hung up - think I got this in high school or earlier. Yikes, 30+ years!

Drawers

My under bed drawers:
1: unmatched socks, panties, workout socks, play socks
2:
3: bras, Church related underthings
4:
5: blocked :-(
6: blocked :-(

Progress
Drawer 1 is finished, only hoping to find the other unmatched socks
Drawer 2 has underthings that need to be cut up before being thrown away
Drawer 3 needs work, I only use 2/3rds of what's in here looks good now
Drawer 4 slips, sexy undies, sentimental clutter, book light
Drawer 5 sexy jammies
Drawer 6 empty!

I have one of the quart paint cans ready for the trash and am working on a second one. Our trash company will take latex paint if it is dry (yea)

We've had a large box left over from when we got new cable equipment (Jan?) in the living room. I finally got it moved to my trunk to hold stuff I don't want rolling around - mainly workout stuff that I want with me but not up front.

Thursday
So, you can't see the floor on my side of the bed but there is stuff piled on the floor in front of drawers 5 & 6. (in front of the boxes in the corner!) The drawers are directly under the pillow area. I haven't opened them in ages and just piled stuff from on top of the bed because I wasn't actually using that piece of floor. sigh

I got two shopping bags emptied, mostly magazines. I kept a log of what I tossed, including the sticky note I used and the pen that ran out of ink while I was writing the note. One shopping bag had 4 things in it, 3 I put away and 1 needs to be returned. How fun, another 40+ things, gone. There are still a couple of things to deal with. A bookmark, bill, a couple of articles to read. . .

As of right now, the only difference in new pictures would be the laundry and the covers on the bed. I did do something, you just can't tell. I'm very grateful for this challenge, and others like it, for helping me with whatever progress I've made. Okay, you can tell the paint cans are gone if you know where to look.

Any progress on Friday or Saturday? Please tell me I at least dusted the television? Nope. Not a good week to be starting an exercise program.

We have a recorder (VHS to DVD) that I'm going to put in my empty drawer. I found lots of bras that I won't be wearing any time soon. I have pretty but not sexy bras I wear now and will get more when I lose more weight. When I hit my body-size goal . . . I'm going to Victoria's Secret ;-)

I feel good even if I do nothing for the rest of challenge. I have two bags of donations, and one bag of trash all from the bedroom. I moved the big box out of our living room. I recycled five protein powder containers. FIVE of them! They would make great craft containers if only I knew of a craft. Next up: the car cup type gum containers. Great for beads but . . .

Guess what I'll be doing for the next 13 weeks?

I've run out of room for my books so not only do I need to weed my library, I need to reduce my belongings in general.

Wish me luck!

Saturday Snapshot: Kitchen edition

91 Day De-Clutter Challenge

Mary is walking us through our homes, helping us to purge, purge, purge! We aren't doing any deep cleaning this time around, we're just going through and getting rid of the extras...

Do you feel stuck at your house? Is clutter causing you any stress? How free would you feel to have a clean and organized house right now? What would you do next?!

I'm also linking to Saturday Snapshot :-)

To participate in Saturday Snapshot: post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken then leave a direct link to your post in the Mister Linky at West Metro Mommy Reads. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

This week's challenge goal was to go through the kitchen, pantry and dining room. Yikes!! I don't have an actual dining room, just an area with a table so that part was easy. The pantry? Nope, not even going to show you that. It is a walled off section in the garage that I can't even walk in right now. My son is able to reach for the stuff I need, if I know exactly where it is so I guess that's something.

I did go through one drawer. . . yeah, I know, one drawer is nothing compared to how fabulous some of the other posts are. I did clean out the fridge but I do that before trash day most weeks.

I started with this
After going through this drawer, I realized it would do better in a new location so switched it with this. . .
The towels are supposed to stack but there really isn't room for more than six or eight towels and I have way more than that.

Now, to "fix" this. It started with a new purchase. . .

Purple! :-) A spoon, slotted spoon, spatula and a spoonula. All heat resistant to 400°F and not metal (we still have some coated cookware). Then we found a (purple!) slotted turner and were able to get rid of the old one.

I cleared out the drawer and put everything in a box before going through stuff. I found FOUR cookie scoops. Two different sizes, one pair matched, they're the ones I kept.

These are the things I got rid of (sorry for such a lousy photo!)
Several of these are still "good" but I have duplicates or don't like them. The potato masher is actually cracked, I don't know why it it stil...yes I do, it was hiding in the back of the drawer and I hardly ever saw it.

These are the things we're still thinking about, some I don't know what they do!

This is what the utensil drawer currently looks like, there are few things in the dishwasher.
and the new towel drawer

My kitchen and pantry have a LLOOOOONNNNG way to go but I'm happy with my progress, it feels really good so far. Next week we start on kid's room #1 and as I don't have little kids in the house I should be able to work on the dreaded office/black hole of a bedroom.  um, maybe it would be easier to stay in the kitchen for another week ;-)

Reading Challenge - oops, CLUTTER Challenge

looks like next year the challenge posts will not start with reading ;)

I like to have a place for everything and everything in it's place. I know, if you've been in our home you won't believe me because I have TOO MUCH STUFF!

When I was first married, there was one bedroom and no garage/storage, then three-bedrooms and a carport/storage. Now there are four-bedrooms and a two-car garage. Not only has the "stuff" expanded to fit the space - it is overflowing!

How fortunate to see Melissa's post at The Betty and Boo Chronicles. Her comments about the frustration of putting "declutter" on your new year's resolution list, again and again, really struck home with me. She is going to do it this year and we get ring-side seats!

She wants to "throw out, recycle, or donate" 2,011 things this year. Even if she doesn't make it, there will be a dent! Soda cans/bottles and last week's leftovers don't count but that homework paper from two years ago counts as one. So does the expired Border's coupon you didn't use. Cool, huh?

I'll join in but I'm not going to list everything like Melissa is. Check out the specific post and see how she's doing.

As I was telling my daughter about this, I called it an odyssey and then said, I didn't really call it that. She said I should have. I guess she's right. This will be a long eventful journey, often filled with hardships. ;)

odyssey progress:
so far...

I've been carrying around an extra 52 pieces of paper between my wallet and purse. GONE! I'm just happy I didn't just toss them, I found $25  The flip side is that if the papers hadn't been there, the money couldn't hide....

All the Christmas decorations, except the tree, are boxed up. Not exactly gone but at least they're "in their place"

I have four books ready to donate

recycled an unused planner calender from 2005 ...yikes!

recycled a telephone directory for a planner size I no longer own

finally, tossed the grocery bag of "office paper" in the recycle bin, paper bag too - going to count as one ;)

three gift bags/boxes are now in their place ;)

recycled the tissue paper, I don't need to count each piece do I?

two more items put away

three more papers recycle that would have been 'kept' before, not because I needed them just not 'tossed'

recycled Ikea catalog.....from 2003!

five more papers recycled

17 more items recycled, filed, trashed or put away :)

Feb. 16

"filing" books and threw away about 20 pieces of paper/sticky notes being used as bookmarks

sigh, threw away a book. Actually I recycled it - manual for a broken Palm

hey - recycle the Palm! There is a e-waste Saturday so the broken Palm & CD player as well as a replaced TV goes, that's another 3 items :D

recycled 3 odd size shipping boxes

recycled 23 copies of a crossword puzzle for a family reunion (filed one)

50 papers recycled. I do the bulletin for our Sunday services and each week required two papers. Why was I keeping these? I know I was, they were paper clipped together!

10 items: 8 papers, a 13 page bound booklet (8.5x11), and 1 large envelope to hold it all. Small potatoes? It was a uncompleted survey from middle school - the kid is 21!

22 papers for BSA summer camp, from 2007

105 miscellaneous receipts, notes, and catalogs.

And the grocery sack they were in.

1 late bill paid

I think I'm liking this challenge, 300+ items tossed, recycled, filed, donated, or paid! I really don't know if it would all have been done this soon after Jan 1st if not for the challenge. Thanks Melissa!

April 30:

48 more books to donate
25 pages of book notes/lists
51 misc papers; receipts, homework, statements of closed accounts...

May 3:

1 more book
2 catalogs
37 misc papers/sticky notes

May 4:
2 directories (80 & 97 pages)
57 misc papers/sticky notes

5-17/22:
1 bookmark found and put away
1 fabric sample tossed (from 4 years ago?)
26 misc papers/receipts

Important note. I went to the grocery store on Saturday and not only did I NOT save the grocery list, I threw away the receipt! Usually these get tossed in my purse then on a table next month then maybe a box before being thrown away. I know it was only three papers but it is an important step.

7-14:
sigh, we have a water leak. The plumber is going to be working on the pipes tomorrow so the space had to be cleared. He needs the wall behind a dresser that has stuff all over it! While moving stuff out of the way....

tossed 2 pens
a strip of coupons (expired 9-2010)
2 batteries
10 magazines (didn't even flip through them!)
"happy meal" bucket (Halloween! I haven't eaten at MickeyD's in years)
deflated balloon (??)
3 votive candles that no longer smell like banana nut muffins
a, at one time, very nice hard sided gift bag
and....an empty cardboard dip package that was hiding under the
angel food cake (still moist) that we served on Memorial Day
put away the pot the cake was hiding under ;-)

Yea, another 24 items!

update: 9-3
total so far is 575 items
I know there are more because I lost a list but I'm so happy with my progress so far.
later on 9-3: cleaned out my purse and was able to toss 24 notes, coupons and/or receipts

Dec 15: another 124 notes, receipts, sales circulars, expired coupons! Eleven more papers and 9 magazines
total so far.....743. Too bad most of these a papers. I'm mean, I'm glad they are gone but I need bigger stuff!

Cleared out craft drawers but there is no way to figure out number of items :-(
