Any book that you have personally purchased, been gifted, or swapped, BEFORE January 1, 2012 and just have not gotten the chance to read yet. NO ARCs, library books, re-reads or books purchased in 2012.

This one was bound to be my first one completed, there is another challenge that says ONLY to-be-read books until Feb 1! Of course, last year I didn't make the TBR Dare but so far so good! Don't know if I'll make the whole months, I'm itching to read Anne McCaffrey and re-reads don't count

Reading My Own Books

Welcome to Mt. TBR

At this time, I have boxes of books in a storage unit. They've been listed at Library Thing and have a somewhat method to the boxing but not really. This isn't even all of them! A lot of these have been read at least once already but the goal is to read all the ones that have been purchased but not read....To Be Read.

I found some challenges to help me with this!




Challenge 1: Mt. TBR

Time frame: 2012

Basic requirements: No books from 2012, purchased or gifts. No library books, re-reads or ARCs. There are several levels (12, 25, 40, 50, 75, 100) corresponding with a mountains. I'm going for Mt. Vancouver and hope to read 25 books.

Challenge 2: Read Your Own Books

Time frame: 2012

Basic requirements: Any book that you have personally purchased, been gifted, or swapped, BEFORE January 1, 2012 and just have not gotten the chance to read yet. NO ARCs, library books, re-reads or books purchased in 2012. There are four levels but I'm going for level 1 and hope to read 1-5 books.

Challenge 3:Off the Shelf!

Time frame: 2012

Basic requirements: No books from 2012, purchased or gifts. No library books, re-reads or ARCs. Crossover challenges are fine, you can change levels at any time, this is eBook, short story, and graphic novel friendly,There are several levels (5, 15, 30, 50, 75, 76-135, 136-200). I'm going for trying and hope to read 15 books.

Challenge 4: The TBR Double Dare

Time frame: Jan 1 to Apr 1 , or goal of your choice.

Basic requirements: Make a resolution to read only the books in your To Be Read stack from January 1, 2012 to April 1. Can you survive? Nope! Didn't even make it to six books last year! This year, my goal is 30 Days, except for review/tour books and The Capture of the Earl of Glencrae.

Reviews though not required are always nice.
Audio, E-books, Bound and re-reads all count
There is no need to come up with your list of books in advance.

Hey, I did it! My goal was to read three books and I got in four!

The Napping House is a picture book and I read it while playing games on Facebook.

Unlikely Friendships is non-fiction. 47 short stories of unlikely animal pairings, a snake and a hamster???? Fabulous book if you like animals.

100 Cupboards is a children's book (fourth grade) and while there were a lot of pages, it was a fairly fast read. Book two in the series is out and while I may read it...I haven't ordered it.

Dragongirl is a Pern book. I love Pern and was able to spend most of Saturday reading and finished before going to bed. If you want to try reading the Pern series, don't start with this one! Not only is it layered with past book references, you won't understand most of what goes on. Plus, while I liked it alot, I didn't love it. I'd start with Dragonflight then Dragonsong & Dragonsinger. Those are also my favorites.


I'm glad I joined in the Read-a-Thon, even though this was a busy weekend for me, I don't know if I would have read Dragongirl this year without it. It was in my pile but more as a if-you-have-time kind of thing. Now I can move one of the other titles into that spot :D

Challenge Update - Read Your Own Books Read-a-Thon

ALL of the books on my short list were recent purchases but were for "later". I'm pleased to report that I've finished Unlikely Friendships - nonfiction and The Napping House - picture book.

I am currently on page 266 of 100 Cupboards and expect to finish it later today.

I don't know which of the remaining five I'll choose next.

A perfect challenge for me this year as I'm trying not to purchase so many books, hosted by MizB.

For 2010, I am planning to continue with the RYOB (Read Your Own Books) challenge! The rules are simple:

• Pick a number of books you’d like to read in one year
• Choose those books from your OWN collection
• Read them between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010

And, that’s it!

Some other guidelines for this challenge:

• Re-Reads are NOT allowed (the challenge is to get more of your own books read that have been sitting there waiting!)
• Audiobooks & e-books ARE allowed
• You do NOT need a blog to participate — you can leave comments on this post with your progress

I'm aiming for 75 books that are currently on order or in the house. This doesn't include the $30 gift card I got for Christmas. Seventy-five is not a high number as far as reading is concerned however I love to purchase new books, re-read favorites and I signed up to check 50 books out of the library!

Read Your Own Books Challenge

The rules for this challenge are very simple…

* set a goal for how many of your OWN books you’d like to read in 2009
~I've read 16. I hope to read 40 total and review at least half of them~

* read from your own collection between January 1st and December 31st, 2009

And, that’s basically it! You don’t have to create a list beforehand (’cause we all know that our reading preferences change as the year progresses), and you can even read books that come into your possession (that will be yours to keep) during the year!

- you CAN overlap with other challenges

- eBooks and Audiobooks count AS LONG AS they are from your own collection
