I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Thoughts on ... Devil's Food Cake Murder

This is not the first book in the series. Doesn't it read like you're missing stuff? Sort of. I know stuff happened in the character's lives before this but enough is retold that I didn't feel like I was missing out, I want to go back to the beginning of the series!

As for the book itself... I liked enough to read more in this series but not enough to read this title again by itself.

The story didn't seem forced. I liked the twists. Hated a couple of characters, loved others. I'm ready to bake ;) This isn't a heart-stopping action story but parts did have my heart pounding.

Devil's Food Cake Murder
Hannah Swensen Mystery
by Joanne Fluke

Mass Market Paperback
Cozy Mystery
304 pages
Grade:  C+

Product Description:
Hannah Swensen has to admit life is pretty sweet. Things are going well in the romance department and her bakery’s delectable confections are selling as fast as she can bake them. Even her good friend Claire is head over heels with her new husband, Reverend Bob Knudson. If only they could find time to take their honeymoon!

When Bob’s childhood friend, Matthew Walters, comes to town, it seems like divine intervention. Matthew, like Bob, is a Lutheran minister with a stubborn sweet tooth. Since he’s on sabbatical, Matthew is happy to fill in for Bob while he and Claire take that long-awaited honeymoon. It sounds like the perfect plan—until Hannah finds Matthew face-down in a plate full of Devil’s Food Cake, a single bullet in his head. It will take some sleuthing to sift out the killer, but Hannah is sure of one thing: even the most half-baked murder plot can be oh so deadly…

The book's cover stopped me. It's a good one, very eye-catching. This is on my mind because today I met with the designer who's going to do my cover.

What gets you interested in a book, may I ask? Does the cover grab you and make you look at the blurbs on the back? Is it name recognition of the author? Reviews? I'd love to hear your take on this.
